Altar Server Training Session
CHILDREN: Have you just received your First Communion and always wanted to be an altar server?
PARENTS: Have your children expressed interest in becoming a server and you don’t know how to get
them started in participating at Mass? This is your chance!
St. John will conduct an extended Altar Server training session for children who wish to become servers
on Saturday, August 18 from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Altar serving is an extreme privilege, and we welcome all children of our Parish
to learn how they can participate in this very special ministry.
The Requirements for serving at Mass are:
1. The altar server must have received first confession and Holy Communion. They should
be mature enough to be able to sit for the length of the mass and be attentive at all times.
2. The altar server should know the principal prayers and responses of the Mass.
To learn more about being a server, please contact Neal Borter at
[email protected] or call at 804.357.5712

“The People Were Joyful Even Though They Had So Little”
J
une 22 marked the beginning of a remarkable expedition. My brother(Anthony) and
I, Fr. John, Bill Maguire (Director of Youth Ministry), and members from four other
parishes in our diocese embarked on a life-changing journey. This was my first mission
trip, and my experience was far beyond what words can describe. We spent our time working
at a variety of places: teaching and playing with St. Lucian children at the Missionaries
of Charity; painting at the Marian Home for the elderly; taking care of the mentally and
physically handicapped at St. Lucy’s home;
and handing out to the children clothes
collected during the “Mission Clothe Me”
event. We went expecting only to give to
the poor, without receiving anything in
return. But they gave us an even greater
gift: they taught us how to be truly happy.
I learned that no matter how little we think
we have, there are people who have far
less than we do. The poverty in St. Lucia is
beyond belief, yet they still have more faith
than most of us. Mary, an elderly lady we
visited, lived in a very small shack about
the size of my bathroom. When we asked her if she lived alone, she
said no. We looked around trying to figure how anyone else could
fit in her tiny space. We asked who else lived with her, and she
responded with a smile on her face: “The Holy Spirit and God, of
course.”
At the Missionaries of Charity, the children who came on Saturdays
and Sundays for lunch, possibly their only meal that day, were still
jumping around, playing with each other and excited to learn about
God. It amazed me! Being around them brought joy to me, because
the children and the Sisters were always looking at the bright side
of things. I loved helping with the cooking for the kids, painting
figurines that were going to be used to teach them about God, and
even assisting the Sisters in teaching them. I enjoyed working at
the Missionaries of Charity, and what we did there will always be
in my heart. That’s not the only thing that is going to stay with me,
though. Whenever it rains, I’ll think about the overhang we built to
shelter the little preschool children at the Marian Home. The Holy
Family Children’s Home, an orphanage with youth ranging from
ages 3 to 17, has a special place in my memory as well. When we
handed them the donated clothing and asked them to “model” their
new outfits for us, the look on their faces was pure delight! They
loved the attention we gave them, and it brought joy to my fellow
missionaries and me.
Helping out at these different missions made a difference in my life.
I enjoyed this trip, and I recommend it to anyone who has a desire
to serve God and others. It will open your eyes to the beauty of this
world and bring you closer to God!

The Collier County Elections Board will
be sending a Voter Outreach Team to
St. John the Evangelist this weekend to
facilitate voter registration. The team will
be onsite in the narthex on Saturday from
2:15 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday from
7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. They will bring a
laptop with the current registered voter
database so that parishioners can verify
their status. If you are not registered, a
team member will assist you in completing your application.
The deadline to register to vote in the general election in
November is not until October 9. If you are not registered to
vote or are unsure, this will be a great opportunity to make
sure that you are ready to cast your ballot in November.
Bathroom renovations in the Parish Life Center began this
past week. As was the case when we renovated the bathrooms
in the church two years ago, there are always surprises
when the demolition begins. Much of the drywall in the
bathrooms must be replaced as what was initially installed is
not appropriate for a commercial bathroom application. We
will install “Durock” cement board, which is water and mold
resistant. In addition, the new flooring in the PLC bathrooms
will be travertine versus traditional ceramic tile. The finished
product will be absolutely
beautiful, and there will be no
grout lines, which is always
a constant maintenance issue
in commercial bathrooms.
The installation process
for travertine is more time
consuming as each piece must
be “floated.” We were able
to find a beautiful travertine
stone at a price lower
than ceramic tile. Granite
countertops and stainless steel
sinks will also be included
in the bathroom renovation.
While we complete the
men’s room, guests in the
PLC ballroom may use the
bathroom in the classroom
hallway. Thanks for your understanding and patience while
we complete this much needed renovation.
We are also in the final stages of the bid process to refinish
the stage and dance floor in the Parish Life Center. We have
not refinished these surfaces in over eight years and it is well
overdue. Once we select the final bid, the process will take
approximately one week.
We are currently seeking individuals interested in working in
the nursery which is located in the Parish Life Center. This

is a paid part time position. Candidates must be at least 18
years of age, willing to be fingerprinted, participate in a Safe
Environment Training seminar and be able to handle multiple
children at one time. If you are interested, please pick up an
application in the parish office.
Have you visited our memorial garden recently? Surrounded
by a beautiful and very thick Ficus hedge on the Southwest
side of the church, many would not even know this garden
exists. Our landscapers have done a magnificent job of
creating a delightful environment as the final resting place for
our parishioners and their immediate family. Just this past
week, four different parish couples chose to purchase space in
our memorial garden. One of these four couples was hesitant
about purchasing space in our Catholic Memorial Garden and
suggested they might like to look elsewhere. After comparing
prices at other cemeteries, they quickly returned to St. John
the Evangelist and took advantage of a truly great deal. It
costs only $1,200.00 to purchase a space in our memorial
garden. This is an all-inclusive price meaning it includes the
opening, closing, urn and granite headstone. I can assure you
that this is an incredibly competitive price. As a reminder,
space is very limited and sale of space in the garden may
be terminated without notice. I took over the management
of the memorial garden several years ago and have learned
plenty since that time. The
most important thing I have
learned is that pre-planning
is essential. Those couples
that plan ahead and purchase
space in our memorial garden
have one less thing to worry
about when a loved one passes
away. Conversely, when you
pass away, you will leave your
family one less thing to worry
about.
Although at a slower
summertime pace, we continue
to make strides towards our
goal for the 2012 Catholic
Faith Appeal. We are still well
ahead of our level at this same
time last year with respect to our goal. In addition, our goal is
only $3,000.00 greater this year than last. If you have not yet
made a pledge for the 2012 appeal, there is plenty of time to
do so. As a continual reminder, if you are a seasonal resident
or visitor, please make you check payable to the Catholic Faith
Appeal with St. John the Evangelist in the memo line.

Prayer For the Protection of Religious Liberty
O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people
and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and
your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,
you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light
and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give
us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they
are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the
rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons
and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history
of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome
—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after
us — this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with
liberty and justice for all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Leftover Gifts from a Bountiful God
T
oday’s readings speak to us about the great generosity of God. The
Prophet Elisha took the twenty barley loaves and managed to feed a
hundred people and there was still some left over.
A miracle? Some critics may well argue that
twenty large barley loaves would manage to feed
such a number. In today’s gospel, Jesus feeds
the five thousand with merely five barley loaves
and two fish. A miracle? One may wonder what
the critics would have to say about this action
performed at the hands of Jesus of Nazareth?
No science could explain how a great multitude
could be fed with five barley loaves and two
fish. Moreover, the disciples filled twelve wicker
baskets with the leftover fragments. At times
we have to rely on faith to understand God’s
generosity in our lives and the scriptures that
are explained to us. Jesus is teaching us that
the Father is willing to give himself completely
Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes (Catholic News Service)
through the hands of his Son who comes to feed
us, nourish us, strengthen us, and gift us. This is
the essence of grace.
Prayer
We pray: Lord, may I always recognize
your presence in those people who
challenge me, especially in those that the
world deems to be different or sometimes
worthless. May I learn to embrace all
people, languages, and ways of life as a
sure sign of your generosity working in
the world today. Amen.

There was a need present in the multitude that gathered around Jesus.
Many of them were reaching out for healing. Others were searching
the wisdom that Jesus had to offer. In the midst of the search and
the need for healing, the people become physically hungry. Jesus
recognizes their human need. In performing the sign of feeding the five
thousand, Jesus not only satisfies the hunger of the body, but also the
hunger of the soul. The action of Christ that day pointed beyond itself
– it pointed to the divine nature of his mission. When the people are
fed, there is still more left over and Jesus requests that the gift that he

gives should not go to waste.
Jesus also tells us to make sure that we do not waste
the gifts that have been given into our hands. Does

to take that Word, share that Word, incarnate that
Word by the very nature of our own lives, our own
decisions, and our very actions. He is telling us today – “I have

A Sacred Feeding
“Over seas, mountains, and grassy plains
They sought Him out
People like you and I
With a hunger not only of body,
But of soul.
For in that very moment
Is the very presence of God made known
A Sacred Feeding takes place
That satisfies both heart and soul
And so God whispers, “I love you. I nourish you, for you are mine.”
Hungered souls behold their God
Who is ready to feed,
Willing to heal,
And prepared to satisfy
An insatiable appetite for Love and Truth
Thousands rise up from grassy plains
Changed by their encounter, nothing goes to waste
They are given food for their journey
Bread for their soul
And make a return home, touched by the gift
Five barley loaves and two fish
Are man’s humble gifts
Placed into Sacred Hands
They are Blessed, Broken, and Shared,
In thanksgiving they are offered to hungry souls
And so God returns to mountain’s grandeur
Where eagles soar
And angels fly
He waits in Sacred Silence
To provide once again for broken spirits and hungry souls”
Reclining on still meadows
Thousands receive the gift
Hungers are taken away
And the sign of God revealed
No longer will they hunger, no longer they need healed

Verse 1) Did you feel the mountains tremble? Did you hear the oceans roar

Verse 2) Did you feel the people tremble? Did you hear the singers roar
when the lost began to sing of Jesus Christ, the saving One?
Pre-chorus) And we can see that, God, youÕre moving, a mighty river through the nations;
and young and old will turn to Jesus. Fling wide, you heavenly gates: prepare the way of the risen Lord!
Verse 3) Do you feel the darkness tremble when all the saints join in one song,

Kingston. You have always answered our requests and our
prayers in providing a nutritional meal, often the only meal of
the day, for these helpless children. Fortunately, the government
of Jamaica has recognized the plight of these children and has
initiated a food subsidy program for them. This program does
not, however, include the Nursery Schools we sponsor, and so,
we are still trying to address the needs of these 3, 4 and 5 year
olds who have different dietary
needs than their older schoolmates.
Therefore, we are asking for a
contribution of $150.00 to sponsor
one Nursery school child with
lunch for the 2012-2013 school
year. This amounts to less than one
dollar a day for the entire school
year.
We also need to supplement our
scholarship fund for students
who need books and tuition for
high school (grade 7 and higher),
Teacher Training Colleges, or four
year baccalaureate degree colleges.
As a result of academic successes in
the elementary schools we support,
more and more of our students are
continuing their studies by applying
to tuition based high schools and
four year colleges. The Jamaican
government provides only limited
support after grade 6. We need
your help in encouraging these
students to follow their dreams and
aspirations for a better life, and break the cycle of poverty that
has plagued these people for generations. Your contribution of
$200.00 will go a long way in paying for books and tuition at
these institutions of higher learning.
If you prefer, your donation in any amount can be made to our
General Education Fund, which gives us the flexibility to use
your gift where it is most needed.
All donors of $150 or more will receive one or more photos of
our eligible students.
We thank you for your past and
future financial support, and know
God will always remember your
kindness and generosity shown to
these needy students. God Bless
You All.
