A new ministry for those who are searching for a job and for those who are
considering making a career change meets on Monday evenings at 6:30. Looking
for a new job opportunity can be both frustrating and scary. This new ministry is
designed to make this process less intimidating and less stressful and hopefully
lead you to a job that is satisfying. It is not a simple process so we will meet
weekly to discuss various strategies and support those on the same path.
It will involve getting to know yourself better, learning various occupations and
developing strategies that will help you land that perfect job. Learning jobsearch skills is a no-lose situation. One never knows what the future may hold
and if you someday find yourself on the outside looking in, you will be better
prepared to move forward.
Carol Marlow, MA, is a parishioner and has 30 years of experience in the
training and consulting industry. She also is a licensed realtor and currently
works at St. Ann School in Naples as the Director of Guidance & Counseling.
Classes will be held in the library from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feel free to bring a snack
or beverage. There is no cost for this ministry. If you have any questions, Carol
can be reached at 239.948.0050.

SVdP November Food Drive Was “HUGE”
In the words of a local car dealer, the recent St. Vincent de
Paul Thanksgiving Food Drive was “Huge”.
Over 1,200 Publix grocery bags were distributed and the
result was a full truck packed from front to back. On the
final day of the drive, some food bags had to go with the
drivers in the front seat.
On delivery of the food to the Saint Vincent de Paul
Assistance Center on Mercantile Blvd., it took three days
to unpack, sort, and shelve all the items. To see the pantry
now, it is full! But we know that come summer it will be
empty!
St. John’s SVdP conference is justly proud of the St. John
parishioners’ generosity as they have been feeding the
hungry for the past twenty years.
Even the poor boxes were filled by people who were not
able to be here for the food drive. The poor boxes are a
main source of SVdP assistance to help the needy.

Statement of the Catholic Bishops of Florida on the 41st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
January 22, 2014
“Every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of
Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who even before he was born, and then just after birth,
experienced the world's rejection.” (Pope Francis, September 2013)
On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized the termination of life in the womb, radically
altering our country’s discourse regarding the fundamental human right to live. Since then, an estimated
55 million unborn children have been deprived of life in the United States alone. We, nevertheless,
“rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer,” as Paul instructed in his letter to the
Romans. (cf. Romans 12:12)
We rejoice in hope as the number of abortions performed in Florida continues to decline every year.
Close to 20,000 fewer abortions took place in our state in 2012 than did in 2006. We rejoice in hope
while strides are made such as on June 5, 2013, when Governor Scott signed a bill into law that
provides an infant born alive during an attempted abortion with the same rights, powers, and privileges
as any other child born alive. The active involvement of our young in protecting the unborn is also a
great hope to us.
We endure in affliction as we work and pray to overcome the high court’s far-reaching decision that
has remained a scourge on our society, profoundly impacting the medical profession, the legal
profession, the media, and through them, all people. This unjust ruling has perpetuated the intrinsic evil
of killing the unborn child. As we endure, we will not rest in our efforts until the day when the unborn
child achieves full legal recognition and protection of law, from the moment of conception.
We persevere in prayer for the mothers and fathers of the 76,138 unborn children who were aborted
in our state in 2012. We persevere in prayer that the pregnant mothers in Florida who consider
abortion may find their way to crisis pregnancy centers that will remind them of the truth and beauty of
the gift from God in their womb, and support them in their time of need. We persevere in prayer for the
healing and pastoral care of post-abortive mothers and fathers through ministries such as Project
Rachel.
Pope Francis, addressing the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations in September
2013, proclaimed, “A widespread mentality of the useful, the ‘culture of waste’ that today enslaves the
hearts and minds of so many, comes at a very high cost: it asks for the elimination of human beings,
especially if they are physically or socially weaker. Our response to this mentality is a decisive and
unreserved ‘yes’ to life.”
May we accept our Holy Father’s challenge to protect life at all stages and see the face of our Lord in
the unborn.

Magnificat Breakfast Saturday, January 25
at Holiday Inn Airport, Fort Myers
ADULT FAITH FORMATION
Mysteries of Our Faith
All women are invited to a breakfast sponsored by Magnificat, a ministry to Catholic
women. The breakfast will be held Saturday, January 25, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the
Holiday Inn Airport at Gulf Coast Town Center, Fort Myers.
The speaker is Ronda Bogani Ayala. Ronda was raised in the Protestant faith, but studied
Catholicism and joined RCIA. She was confirmed at the age of 33 and found her calling
working with teens preparing for Confirmation. She is a Registered Nurse and was
the Regional Coordinator for Mom’s Club in the Southeast United States. Years later,
Ronda wrote medical articles for Parenting Plus Magazine. She has a story to tell of
fear, anger, courage and, ultimately, faith and communication with her Lord that seems
unbelievable. He has called her to serve Him in ways that she never could foresee and
she believes that if He chose her, then everyone must be chosen and we only have to
listen to hear His calling.
Advanced registration is required by mail. Seating is limited; no walk-ins. Please send
a $20 check, payable to Magnificat Fort Myers, to Joanne Tarantino, 3315 Bermuda Isle
Circle, Unit 128, Naples, FL 34109, 239.887.0060 or Shirley Ruehl, 11451 Pembrook

oday we remember the visit of the magi to the newborn king of the Jews – the very Jesus
whom we encounter in the breaking of the bread. But who were these magi? There is much
speculation about these people. Some tradition points to the magi being astrologers, others,
wise men (or philosophers), still others, kings from other ancient kingdoms. Regardless of
where we stand in our interpretation, we know that these characters came from the east and
were familiar with the prophecies of Sacred Scriptures. The magi were the ones who followed
a sign pointing to the one who was to shepherd Israel. You
could say that they were people who sought for the deeper

As we listen to the story of the gospel we remember a
manifestation of God to human beings. We are now
challenged to open ourselves to the everyday epiphanies that
will lead us to God. The magi teach us that we must seek
the deeper realities of life – this is true spirituality. There is
really more to life than meets the eye. Every sunset, flower,
face and creature can ultimately open us to the beauty that
God has gifted us. However, we must have open hearts and
minds like the magi, to recognize the sacred in the midst of
the ordinary. God gifts us with many things. It is up to each
of us individually and collectively to honor such gifts by
being faithful stewards of God’s creation.

So what does this all mean? It means simply that
we offer ourselves to God by the lives we lead. We
are challenged to hold fast to the dignity of human

that future generations will encounter God through
the abundance of creation. It simply means that we
recognize the Lord Jesus in the poorest of the poor and weakest of
the weak. If we open our minds and wills completely to what is
sacred in the secular, then our whole lives may be blessed by the

The Magi
Gazing upon the heavens
The magi are the seekers
They patiently watch the night skies
Waiting to see the light of promise
That prophets hoped and longed for
The star leads them to a journey’s end
In which they find a new beginning
Wrapped up in swaddling clothes
They find a new born king
Illuminated by heaven’s light
Then all of creation celebrates
The manifestation of God’s love
The constellations witness the birth
Of a great shining star that leads
To the Light of Life
The seekers offer their gold
For the majesty of God born here below
Frankincense is gifted for fitting worship
Myrrh, the costly perfumed ointment,
Is placed before the Christ-child as a reminder of
his journey’s end
Caravans set out on a journey
The seekers pursue this star of wonder
Heading out to a far and distant land
Their destination is filled with promise
But first they must follow the light
Homage the magi pay
To this infant king
Light of the world sends them forth
In the world of dream does God thus speak
Sending them home to share this tale of promise

Kevin Williams and His Jamaican Choir
Make Return Visit on January 31-February 1
Once again, Kevin Williams will be bringing his talented group of
singers to Naples to celebrate a weekend of liturgies with us. They
come annually as an act of thanksgiving for our support of the poor
in Jamaica. Kevin and his choir are due in Naples on January 31
and will be with us until noon time on Monday, February 3. Eleven
Jamaicans including Father Thomas will need housing, sustenance, and
transportation while in Naples during that time. To that end the Jamaica
Outreach Program put out the call for volunteer hosts to welcome our
guests into their homes for that duration. Past hosts have never regretted
the opportunity to meet and house this wonderful group of people who
always bring joy and delight, good cheer and warm tidings wherever
they go. For more information contact Martha Mador at 992.2646 or
