How to install Aspen – Windows
For the purpose of installing Aspen and its prerequisites NOTE: a VPN connection to the University network is required in order to install or access the
Aspen software offsite. This is to allow the software to establish a connection to the license
server.

1. Getting Aspen
1.1. Obtain a copy of Aspen or install directly from the following location.
Staff: \\storage2.eng.unimelb.edu.au\software\Aspen 7.3
Students: \\storage1.eng.unimelb.edu.au\labdata\Aspen 7.3
(Approximate size is 7 GB – this may take over an hour to transfer and is best transferred via
wired network at the university)
Or
You may borrow a copy of Aspen from the library.
2. Install prerequisite: Microsoft SQL Server Express
(service pack 3)
2.1. Navigate to
Aspen 7.3\Aspen Engineering DVD1\3rd Party Redistributables\Microsoft SQL Express 2005 Sp3
Double Click SQLEXPR.exe

2.2. Follow the installation until the Feature Selection screen. Select the features as per the image
below then click Next.
2.3. On the Instance Name screen confirm that the “Default instance” is selected then click Next.

2.4. Follow the installation until the Authentication Mode screen is shown. Select “Mixed Mode”
enter an 8 digit password (example: ABCD1234) and click Next.
2.5. Follow the installation until Finish.

3. Install prerequisite: Microsoft .NET Framework SP1
3.1. Navigate to
Aspen 7.3\Aspen Engineering DVD1\3rd Party Redistributables\Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5
SP1
Double Click dotNetFx35.exe
3.2. Restart your computer after installing the prerequisites.
4. Install: Aspen 7.3
4.1. Navigate to
Aspen 7.3\Aspen Engineering DVD1\dvdBrowser and double click.

4.2. On the AspenTech Installation Browser click on the Products tab.
4.3. It will prompt for a valid license, follow the installation until you get to the License
Configuration Type screen. Select License Server and Click Next.

4.4. Type in aspen.license.eng.unimelb.edu.au and click Add server

4.5. Follow the prompts next until the Products tab. Select Aspen Engineering and Click Install.

4.6. Follow the installation onward until you get to the Computer Configuration Type screen and
select a standard install.
4.7. Follow the prompts until you get to Feature Selection for Aspen Engineering V7.3 screen.
Select the products that you wish to install and click Next.
Chemical and
Biomolecular
Engineering note:
Undergraduate students
will only require the
Process Modelling
(HYSYS) feature. The
sub feature of Aspen
Simulation workbook is
not required.

4.8. Follow the installation until you get to User name and Password. Tick the Skip user
name/password validation and then click Next.
4.9. Follow the prompts to install and once done select Finish.

5. Install: Aspen 7.3 Process Economic Analyser
5.1. Repeat step 4.1 through to step 4.4
5.2. Follow the prompts next until the Products tab. Select Aspen
Engineering (for Upgrade) and Click Install.

5.3. Follow the installation onward until you get to the Computer Configuration Type screen and
select a standard install.
5.4. Follow the prompts until you get to Feature Selection for Aspen Engineering V7.3.1 screen.
Select the products that you wish to install and click Next.

Engineering note:
Undergraduate and Master’s
students will only require the
Economic Evaluation feature.
