Dear Friends,
In this issue you will find stories of
both change and hope. Our Camp St.
Vincent completed its 106th season of
summer camp, serving a record number of homeless children from Baltimore City and County. In September,
we celebrated with Baltimore County
Executive, Kevin Kamenetz, and other
dignitaries at our Sarah’s Hope, Hannah More family shelter program for
the launch of our Front Door rapid
re-housing services in Baltimore
County. In early October, we celebrated the completion of a $1 million
renovation and expansion of our Head
Start facilities in east Baltimore at
Caroline Street, which involved the
creation of four new classrooms, new
programming space, and upgrades
to existing classrooms. Finally, we
completed a $5.25 million expansion
and renovation of the Beans & Bread
Center, allowing us to expand the
range of services we are able to offer
our homeless clients.
We are so very grateful for your generosity that allows us to improve our
services, increase our outreach, and
positively impact those we serve. I
hope the news and stories about our
services, staff, volunteers, and donors
will inspire you to continue your support of our efforts to have a positive
impact on our community.
My very best wishes to you and your
family for a happy and healthy fall,
and many blessings this holiday
season!

New Beans & Bread
Center is Complete!
‘‘
The multi-year, $5.25 million project to renovate and expand the Beans & Bread Center is now complete! New and
improved services are focused in four core areas: housing,
employment, health, and recovery. Basic services include
meals, day shelter, showers, laundry, and mail and phone
services. Higher-level services include case management,
employment services, housing placement, basic health
services and medical referrals, and recovery support and
treatment referrals.
Head Start has

Latarsha, a geriatric nursing assistant, her
husband, who is looking for work, and
their son, Braelyn, struggle financially. The
cost of rent, utilities, food, clothing childcare and other necessities often exceed
Latarsha’s modest monthly family budget.
Latarsha is one of 46.5 million Americans
living in poverty.

there are few options available when
looking for a pre-school that will
academically and socially prepare a child
for kindergarten and offer hours to
accommodate the parent’s work schedule.
Fortunately, Head Start is there as a support for these families.
Head Start has been a benefit to Latarsha’s
family since her son enrolled at St. Vincent
de Paul’s Arlington site in Park Heights
last year. “This program is a life saver,”
Latarsha said. “Not only did it help my
family make ends meet with affordable
care but, it has also provided a wonderful
education for my son that has fostered an
eagerness to learn within him!”
“I am so excited with his progress in the
program,” added Latarsha. “He has opened
up more, is sharing more, and comes home
each night talking about what he learned.
Right now he can’t stop mentioning the
days of the week,” she laughs.

cumulative process, and young children who lack early foundational skills
often struggle to catch up to their
peers. These gaps in school readiness have been shown to persist and
worsen in later grades. However, children served by Head Start are highly
prepared for school, less likely to
need special education services or repeat
grades, and are more likely to graduate
from high school.
Parents play an active role in the Head
Start program and are educated and
coached on how to become their child’s
