Catholic Parish of Lower North Shore Incorporating the Churches of St Leonard’s, Naremburn – St Philip Neri, Northbridge – St Thomas’, Willoughby 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time ... Year C ... 9 June 2013 HOW TO BEHAVE AT MASS PARISH OFFICE 182 High St, WILLOUGHBY 2068 Phone: 9958 8846 Fax: 9958 0438 Office Hours Mon-Wed: 9:00am – 4:30pm Thurs: 9:00am – 3.00pm Fri: 9.30am – 2.30pm (during school term only) ST THOMAS’ SCHOOL 2 Horsley Ave, WILLOUGHBY 2068 Phone: 9958 7308 Fax: 9967 2143 Principal Jenny McKeown ST PHILIP NERI SCHOOL 67 Baringa Rd, NORTHBRIDGE 2063 Phone: 9958 7136 Fax: 9958 4132 Principal Sue Bevan PARISH STAFF Parish Priest Fr Rex Curry A certain disposition and behaviour is required when visiting a library, going shopping, listening to a symphony, or going to a party. Even in different parts of one‟s own home, when one is eating, sleeping and studying, different behaviour is required. Similarly, a particular behaviour and disposition is required when you are present at a place of worship like a Synagogue or Mosque. So, the same is required within a Catholic Church. Furthermore, if you come into a Synagogue, Mosque, or Church as a tourist, then a different way of acting is needed in contrast to when you come to a place of worship to pray, or where others are, or might wish to pray. Coming to Mass, you have entered into the community‟s house of God for the purpose of prayer, adoration, reflection, or to celebrate a sacrament with other people. In order to help you enter into a sacred space for the above purposes, we ask you to remember. 1. Turn off mobile phones. Please don‟t text messages or check Facebook from the pews or the back of the Church. Leave social devices in the car. It‟s time to focus on God. It is also distracting others who might be trying to pray. If you are awaiting an important phone call, consider going to Mass at another time. Cameras also need the permission of priests to be used within a Church. 2. Do not bring cups of coffee or bottled water or food into the Church. If we have made our First Communion we are required to fast from food for one hour prior to Mass. Even in many shops customers are requested not to eat and drink, as well as places like libraries and concerts etc. Put simply, Mass is not the place to bring your own food and drink. 3. Parents have the privilege of providing ongoing formation for their children. We appreciate the effort to bring young children to Mass and we welcome them. We have alternate children‟s liturgy at most large Sunday Masses. However, teaching children how to act and behave in an appropriate manner in a variety of circumstances is a required skill of all parents. Teaching youngsters how to belong and behave in different communities like libraries, concerts, even at home, when to eat, sleep, play and work are learned skills. 4. Bring suitable activity aids to Mass for children Mass is usually less than one hour long. Helping children to know when to sit, kneel, sing or stand, how to offer a sign of peace, are good skills to enhance involvement. This type of care respects others at Mass and teaches children how to respect a sacred environment. Having said that, there will always be times when children will play up and parents know only too well the challenges of staying in the Church with very active children. We should all be conscious of finding the right balance between tolerance and respect as we welcome all to our Church. It is easy to ask, “What is this Mass doing for me?” After all, we have come to give thanks to God for what he has given us. We have come to Mass to draw strength from listening to God‟s living word and eating his body and blood so that we might love Him and others better. 6. Do not have conversations during the Mass Try to know the dialogue that takes place at Mass between the celebrant and the congregation. To sing well is to pray twice. As a concert is an uplifting experience through the attention of all, so the Mass is the time when we give our best to God, as the community of God‟s people. Conversations can take place in times of hospitality after Mass with a cup of tea and drinks, or before Mass. I hope these pointers might assist you and your families as we seek to respect all when we come to Mass. It always helps to know what to do in new, or special situations in life – we can take pride in the fact that we know how to conduct ourselves as disciples, guests, and/or, as tourists. The Lord is the stronghold of my life; whom should I dread? When those who do evil draw near, they stumble and fall. and stayed with him for fifteen days, I did not see any of the other apostles; I only saw James, the brother of the Lord. The Word of the Lord. (R) Thanks be to God. FIRST READING 1 Kgs 17:17-24 A reading from the first book of the Kings GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Lk 7:16 Alleluia, alleluia! A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people. Alleluia! The son of the mistress of the house fell sick; his illness was so severe that in the end he had no breath left in him. And the woman said to Elijah, „What quarrel have you with me, man of God? Have you come here to bring my sins home to me and to kill my son?‟ „Give me your son‟, he said, and taking him from her lap, carried him to the upper room where he was staying and laid him on his own bed. He cried out to the Lord, „Lord my God, do you mean to bring grief to the widow who is looking after me by killing her son?‟ He stretched himself on the child three times and cried out to the Lord, „Lord my God, may the soul of this child, I beg you, come into him again!‟ The Lord heard the prayer of Elijah and the soul of the child returned to him again and he revived. Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. „Look‟, Elijah said, „your son is alive.‟ And the woman replied, „Now I know you are a man of God and the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth itself.‟ The Word of the Lord. (R) Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 29:2. 4-6. 11-13. R. v.2 (R.) I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. GOSPEL Lk 7:11-17 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a great number of people. When he was near the gate of the town it happened that a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a considerable number of the townspeople were with her. When the Lord saw her he felt sorry for her. „Do not cry,‟ he said. Then he went up and put his hand on the bier and the bearers stood still, and he said, „Young man, I tell you to get up‟. And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying, „A great prophet has appeared among us; God has visited his people.‟ And this opinion of him spread throughout Judaea and all over the countryside. The Gospel of the Lord. (R) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Or SEASONAL RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 102:1-4. 8. 10. 12-13. R. v.8 (R.) The Lord is kind and merciful. The Lord is kind and merciful. Please take this bulletin home with you today and reflect on the word of God during the week. SECOND READING Gal 1:11-19 A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Galatians The Good News I preached is not a human message that I was given by men, it is something that I learnt only through a revelation of Jesus Christ. You must have heard of my career as a practising Jew, how merciless I was in persecuting the Church of God, how much damage I did to it, how I stood out among other Jews of my generation, and how enthusiastic I was for the traditions of my ancestors. Then God, who had specially chosen me while I was still in my mother‟s womb, called me through his grace and chose to reveal his Son in me, so that I might preach the Good News about him to the pagans. I did not stop to discuss this with any human being, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were already apostles before me, but I went off to Arabia at once and later went straight back from there to Damascus. Even when after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas READINGS FOR WEEK DAYS MONDAY: TUESDAY: WEDNESDAY: THURSDAY: FRIDAY: SATURDAY: 2 Cor 1:1-7; Mt 5:1-12 St Barnabas Acts 11:21-26, 13:1-3; (Mt 10:7-13) 2 Cor 3:4-11; Mt 5:17-19 St Anthony of Padua 2 Cor 3:15-4:1, 3-6; Mt 5:20-26 2 Cor 4:7-15; Mt 5:27-32 2 Cor 5:14-21; Mt 5:33-37 © The scriptural quotations are taken from the Lectionary for Mass, Copyright © 1970, 1986, 1992, 1998, 2001 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine; All rights reserved.
