In Central Asia, an IMB doctor’s greatest concern isn’t for safety but that his ministry will make a difference for the kingdom. A worker in war-torn Somalia of the ’90s knew he’d have to be willing to die for Jesus and spend years learning why believers in persecution grow unimaginably strong in the faith. Engaging people groups in the hard places comes with risk and sacrifice for all who obediently choose to be His heart, His hands, His voice. Most of us aren’t threatened because of our faith, but we need to be in prayer for those who are — not that persecution will end but that believers in persecution will stay courageous and bold. Giving is also a call to obedience and sacrifice. The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering® enables IMB missionaries to live and work at the forefront of lostness and extend our witness through their full-time ministry. Each of us and our churches are called continually to take the next step in our obedience so that Christ is glorified and to ask “What am I doing and what is my church doing to be obedient — to BE His heart, hands and voice, no matter the cost?” Camp Post Office The Camp Post Office is open in the fellowship hall foyer. For a donation to summer camp, you can bring your Christmas cards for church family and we will sort them and hand them out for you. Parade Float Any children that would like to ride on the church float, see Mary Moore. We are planning a nativity scene and need kids to dress up in costume. The Parade will be Saturday, December 8th. Pastor’s Pen Crisis. Hardship. Difficulty. Adversity. Trial. Don’t we cringe at such words? Yet, such experiences are part of life. James 1:2 says, “...when you encounter various trials.” The passage does not say “if.” Such experiences are part of life. How do we face such experiences? If we are going to have them, we need to know how to handle them. We find lessons about dealing with adversity in Luke 8:22-56. In this passage, we see our Lord work some of His greatest miracles. While each of these is a powerful lesson by itself, together they give us a strategy for handling adversity. The first lesson we learn about dealing with adversity is to make sure that we are in God’s will. We see this in the disciples’ experience on the Sea of Galilee. They encountered a horrible storm that threatened their lives (Luke 8:22-25). How could such an experience occur? Much of today’s theology (and it is a stretch to call it theology) would teach that the disciples were out of God’s will. There are those who teach that if you were really in God’s will you wouldn’t have any problems. However, the text shows that they followed our Lord into the boat. They were in the storm because they were obedient, not because they were disobedient. When we face adversity, we need to make sure that we are in God’s will. Yes, God will bring adversity to stop us from going down the wrong path. Yes, there are consequences of sin that are painful. God does discipline His children. However, many adversities have nothing to do with sin, rebellion or self-will. We need to prayerfully search our hearts and lives. If God reveals sin, then confess it. If God reveals that you are going down the wrong path, then turn. But, if you are in God’s will as best as you can tell, then rest in confidence that you are where God wants you to be. Next, we need to seek our Lord. The disciples did. Granted, their seeking was a panicked act of faithfulness but at least they knew what to do when they were panicked! A better example is Jairus (Luke 8:40-42). When his daughter was sick and dying, He came to the Lord Jesus. He sought the help of the only one who could help. Then unnamed lady of verses 43-48 also sought the Lord. She had horrible suffered for twelve years with a hemorrhage. No one had been able to help her. In fact the doctors had caused her even more pain (Mark 5:26). She sought to the help of the only one who could help. Last, we need to trust the unlimited power of our Lord to accomplish His will. This whole passage is a statement of His power. In verses 22-25, He is greater than the most destructive forces in nature. The disciples asked, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” In verses 26-39 He is greater than demons. Such power frightened those who saw the results of His work (verse 35). He healed the diseased woman. He is greater than every weakness that we have in our frail bodies. Jairus saw that our Lord is even greater than death when he saw the Lord raise his daughter from the dead (verse 54-56). This passage shows our Lord’s amazing power. He is greater than every problem that we have. Yes, we will face adversity. You may be facing some now. Search your heart to see if you are in God’s will. If you are not, make the necessary changes. If you are, stay the course. Seek the Lord about your problem. He is waiting for your call. Trust His unlimited power. He will carry you through to His good plan.
