If you could drive just one time a month, we could use you. Please see Wayne Blue or Jonathan. The Church is happy to announce that we will ordain Johnny Brown as a deacon on September 29, during our evening worship service at 6 PM. All ordained men who would like to participate on the ordination council are invited to join us in the prayer room at 4:00 PM. Following the ordination service, we will have a reception in the fellowship hall. Church members are asked to bring finger foods. Pastor’s Pen In 1 John 2:15a we are told, “Do not love the world nor the things in the world…” “World” in this usage means the thoughts, values, mindset, philosophy and ways of man’s society that excludes or even denies God. The “world” in mans’ society that ignores and rebels against God. Why does God so severely warn us about the world? Does He just want to keep us from having fun? Does He derive enjoyment by telling us “No!”? Hopefully, we know God’s loving kindness enough to realize that God only says “No” when it is in our best interest. He only commands against things that He knows will hurt us. How can the world hurt us? We are given an example in the life of Lot. When he separated from Abraham, Lot settled in the cities of the Jordan Valley because they reminded him of Egypt (Genesis 13). This shows that Lot’s values and desires were shaped by a society that rejected the true God. In fact, Egypt is used as a picture for the world throughout God’s Word. Later, Lot would live in Sodom (Genesis 19). What was the result of Lot’s worldliness? First, he was taken prisoner. In Genesis 14, Lot is captured when Kedorlaomer invaded the area to resubjugate them under his authority. Only Abraham’s intervention was able to rescue Lot. It is the same for us. If we love the world we will experience some type of bondage. It may be a habit, addiction or stronghold. It could be in our thoughts, words or actions. We will lose our freedom in some way. We will be enslaved to some degree. At the same time, Lot lost his communion with God. Although Lot was a believer (2 Peter 2:7) we never see him in fellowship with God. In fact, the only message we see Lot receive is the angel’s command to leave Sodom (Genesis 19). We cannot love the world and love God. We cannot be close to the world and be close to God. 1 John 2:15b says, “…If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Worldliness makes us lose our communion with God. Next, Lot lost influence. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom which usually showed influence and authority. However, he couldn’t even influence his future son-in-law. We are tempted to think that worldliness will help our testimony. We tell ourselves, “A little compromise won’t hurt.” We rationalize, “If I’m too different then no one will listen.” We think, “This will help me be more relevant.” The story of Lot and an honest evaluation of the modern church show the fallacy of such thinking. Worldliness destroys our influence. Last, worldliness destroys our family. Lot’s wife was turned to salt because she could not bear the thought of leaving Sodom. Lot’s daughters lived on the level the they saw in Sodom. Lot lost everything that had real value. We can’t expect our family to be any closer to God than we are. When they see Christian parents living for the world, what will they think? Our lives clearly show our true beliefs and values. Many times we pay the full price for those values. God tells us not to love the world because such love will hurt us. Where is your heart?
