my why: BUILDING COMMUNITY Arturo Cantu ED ISAKSON/ ALPHARETTA FAMILY YMCA Arturo Cantu is the lead director for the after-school enrichment site at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church where 25 children participate in Welcoming Hispanic Families. Through this program, Arturo assists bilingual students with their homework and introduces them to the Y’s community-centered programs. “Even though these students are bilingual, they don’t have somebody at home who can help them with homework,” says Arturo. He understands the need to assist bilingual students, and he sees a lot of himself in them. Raised by his great-grandparents, he translated for them because they understood things better when spoken in Spanish. Now, Arturo is sharing his life lessons with the next generation. He is a leader and a role model for Hispanic children as he helps them maintain their heritage and assimilate into American culture. “This partnership is part of the Y’s bigger goal to welcome Hispanic families into the Y family of members and the larger community.” – Arturo Cantu Arturo’s work is just one example of how YMCA donors help build stronger communities.
