WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRPERSONS
OF THE 8TH ESSM CONGRESS
Dear Colleagues and congress participants,
We are delighted to welcome you to Copenhagen to participate in the
8th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM). At this
time of year, Copenhagen and the region of Öresund are preparing for
Christmas Celebrations and we hope that the Scandinavian atmosphere of the
season will embrace you all during your stay in Denmark.
The main aims of the 8th ESSM Congress are to bring forward the latest advances in the understanding of sexual physiology and improved knowledge of the
association of health-risk factors and sexual dysfunctions, as well as advances
in preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic options for various forms of male and
female sexual dysfunctions. The Scientific Committee has made great efforts to
create a diverse scientific schedule that day-by-day offers interesting titles of
various topics and we are confident that each day will offer something for
everyone.
This year we have extended the scientific program and are running 4 sessions
in parallel. Debates have been introduced into the program to allow for extended opportunities for discussions, and we have added an additional interactive
case-session. Two new instructional courses and one postgraduate course are
also being presented.
We have received more than 400 abstract submissions that include various
aspects from basic and clinical research on male and female sexual medicine,
and the number of abstracts scheduled for moderated sessions or podium presentations has had to be substantially increased.
It has been a challenge, but also a very rewarding experience for us to be part
of the organization the 8th Annual Congress of the ESSM. Throughout this process we have received tremendous support and continuous creative encouragements from the ESSM and its secretariat, CPO HANSER SERVICE, our advisory
board and local organizing committee. We are also honored to be involved in
the 10 Year Anniversary Celebration of our Society which in various events will
be acknowledged through all of the meeting-days in Copenhagen and which
will receive special attention during an exciting evening at the Tivoli Garden.

WELCOME FROM
THE ESSM PRESIDENT
Dear ESSM Members, Colleagues and Friends,
For more than 10 years ago, during the meeting of the International Society for
Impotence Research organised by Ganesan Adaikan in Singapore, a group of
enthusiastic European investigators came together and discussed a common
vision to establish a new chapter of the history of the mother society. In the interest of better patient care and to promote research initiatives it was agreed by
all to expand the knowledge on sexual dysfunctions in Europe. The European
Society for Impotence Research (ESIR) was born.
Our first and truly “historical meeting”, organised in Greece by our current Past
President Dimitrios Hatzichristou in the beautiful sea-side resort Porto Carras,
contained pure science and discussions from early in the morning to late in the
evening. No Greek "siesta" at all - what a meeting ! Since then, the society started
to grow rapidly. The initially biennial meetings organised by Inigo Saenz de
Tejada in Madrid, Halim Hattat in Barcelona, myself in Rome, and subsequently the annual meetings organized by Hartmut Porst in Hamburg, Emre Akkus in
Istanbul and David Ralph in London were all extremely successful, both in terms
of delegate-attendance and of scientific quality.
My predecessors as Presidents of the Society, Gorm Wagner, Inigo Saenz de
Tejada, John Pryor and Dimitrios Hatzichristou have progressively transformed
the initial small group of experts in the field of sexual dysfunctions into a solid
association composed of more than 1.200 active members. We have adapted
ourselves to changing times and this has been shown by the subsequent changes
of the name of the Society: from ESIR to ESSIR (European Society for Sexual and
Impotence Research) to go beyond the field of male sexual disorders, and
finally to European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM) to fully embrace the field
of Sexual Medicine.
This year in Copenhagen we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ESSM
and Petter Hedlund and Annamaria Giraldi have invested very much time and
energy in the organization of this wonderful event. The scientific program is solid
and the scientific committee has worked hard to identify key topics of male and
female sexual medicine that will be presented in various forms. Interactive case
sessions and time for discussions have been extended, and we are this year
introducing debates into the program. In addition, novel courses have been
added to our continuously dynamic educational program and the number of free
presentations has been increased to cover the progressively greater amounts of
original scientific submissions to our Society’s meetings. In a new initiative of the
ESSM to its members, we will this year record a large number of sessions, lectures and all instructional courses of the congress in Copenhagen. These will then
be available after the meeting for ESSM members to view on-line though our new
website and we are truly grateful to our academy for their contribution and collaboration to make this happen.
All members of the Executive Committee have been working hard to support
ESSM in their own countries and throughout Europe and we all owe them much
recognition. Many ESSM members have established local affiliated Sexual
Medicine Societies and we do hope that we will soon have a really
pan-European ESSM.
The official journal of ESSM, The Journal of Sexual Medicine, under the energetic
and wise leadership of the Editor in Chief Irwin Goldstein has been rapidly growing in terms of number readers and submitted manuscripts, and has just been
selected to be indexed and included in Medline. Abstracts presented at the
Copenhagen meeting will be published in a dedicated supplement of the Journal.
It is a pleasure for me to welcome you all to our 10 year Anniversary meeting
in Copenhagen.

SPEAKERS CENTRE AND LOUNGE
The speakers centre and lounge are located in room
Focus, accessible via the Exhibition Hall of the ESSM
congress. Speakers are asked to hand in their CD
ROM or USB stick, containing the PowerPoint presentation (IBM format or compatible, no multisession)
preferably one day before their presentation but at
latest 90 minutes prior to the presentation. The presentation will be transferred to the central congress
server and will be available afterwards on a special
congress notebook in the hall of the presentation.
Due to time and technical reasons we kindly ask the
speakers not to use their own notebook. In the speakers centre there are several PC working stations
where speakers can also work on their PC charts in
a quiet area. Technical staff will be glad to assist.
A speakers lounge is provided in a separate area of
room Focus. Please see as well page 7.

GENERAL INFORMATION
POSTER CD ROM
A CD Rom including all poster presentations will be
produced and all delegates will receive the Poster CD
Rom by post after the congress.
Poster authors are asked to upload the final version
of their poster for the 2005 ESSM Congress Poster
CD Rom in the Speakers Centre. Please bring your
poster in digital form with you to the Speakers
Centre.
COFFEE BREAKS
Coffee and tea are served during the morning and
afternoon coffee breaks from Monday, 5 December
to Wednesday, 7 December 2005 free of charge to
all participants wearing congress name badges. The
coffee station bar is located in the Exhibition Hall of
the Bella Center.
CLOAKROOM
INTERNET CENTRE
Several internet terminals are available to all delegates at the Exhibition Hall of the Bella Center. The internet centre is accessible according to the opening
hours of the exhibition.
A cloakroom is available next to the Registration
Counter. You can also store your luggage here.
BANK
An ATM/cash machine is located in the entrance
foyer (west entrance) of the Bella Center.
PRESS
The press centre is set up in room 16 on the first floor
of the Bella Center. It is open from Monday,
5 December through Wednesday, 7 December 2005.
The press centre is managed by the press agency
Geelmuyden.Kiese.
CURRENCY
The Danish Crown is the official currency in
Denmark. Exchange of foreign currency is available
at the Copenhagen Airport and at most hotels, banks
and exchange offices throughout the city. Most of the
large stores accept Euros.
MESSAGES
A message board will be available at the registration
area of the congress.
RESTAURANTS
Beverages, sandwiches, cakes and light dishes can
be purchased from the self service restaurants, which
are: Buffet Bel next to the exhibtion area on the same
floor and Bella Vista on the first floor, next to the hospitality suites, accessible via a staircase from the exhibition area. Both restaurants accept Euros and credit
cards.
If you will visit a Luncheon Satellite Symposium a
lunchbox will be offered to you by the organizer of
the Satellite Symposium.
ELECTRICITY
Denmark uses a 220 volt 50Hz system. Sockets have
the European standard and plugs are two-prong
grounded.
LOST AND FOUND
A lost and found service is available at the Bella
Center Information in the entrance foyer of the Bella
Center.
MOBILE PHONES
Participants are kindly requested to keep their mobile
phones turned off while attending the scientific
sessions in the meeting rooms.

PROGRAM CHANGES
The organisers cannot assume liability for any
changes in the congress program due to external or
unforseen circumstances.
TAXIS
Taxis are available upon demand in front of the west
entrance of the Bella Center. Participants can also
call taxis at the Bella Center Information in the
entrance foyer. Most of the taxis accept credit cards.
INSURANCE
When registering for ESSM 2005 participants agree
that neither the Organising Committee Congress
Secretariat assumes any liability whatsoever.
Participants are highly recommended to make their
own arrangements for health and travel insurance
before they depart from their country. The organisers
will not be responsible for a loss or damage of personal belongings.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PASS
All registered ESSM delegates and accompanying
persons will receive a Travel Pass together with the
personal congress documents at the registration counter. The public transportation pass is valid from
Sunday, 4 December until Wednesday, 7 December
2005 on all buses, trains and metro. The Travel Pass
covers the city of Copenhagen including the Bella
Center and the international airport.
HOSPITALITY SUITES
The major sponsor Pfizer Inc. has arranged a hospitality suite. Please follow the signage in the Exhibition
Hall, the hospitality suite is located in room
Bella Vista 2 on the first floor next to the Bella Vista
restaurant.
AIRPORT
Copenhagen Airport is located 8 km from the city.
Buses, trains and taxis provide transport to the
Copenhagen city center. Taxis can be hired from outside all arrival areas. Fares include VAT and tips and
can normally be paid by credit card. Train tickets are
available from the ticket office above the railway station in Terminal 3.
CAR PARK
Parking space is available next to the Bella Center
and participants arriving by car are advised to use
these facilities. Parking fees are not included in the
registration fee.

Bella Center in Hall A1. The welcome speeches will

through the old and beautiful parts of the capital of
the world’s oldest kingdom whilst the city is nicely

Amalienborg Palaces - the Queen’s official winter
residence – is one of the sights with the Christian
VIII’s Palace.
Another famous sight is the exquisite Rosenborg
Castle built by Christian IV in 1610, with the crown
regalia and the famous Rosenborg Tapesties, woven
especially for the banquet room of the castle in the

STRUCTURE OF THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
STRUCTURE OF THE ABSTRACT BOOK
The scientific program is structured according to
days. Per day it is structured by time and room.
All presenters are listed by name and the title of
their presentation.
The abstract book is structured by session format.
The listing starts with the Video Session followed
by the Podium and Moderated Poster Sessions.
Hereafter the unmoderated posters are listed
according to topics.
MASTER LECTURES
INSTRUCTIONAL COURSES
Each lecture of 30 minutes will be given by a distinguished and honorable expert and will be devoted to
a specific topic of major interest.
ROUND TABLES
These sessions will usually last 90 minutes. They will
focus on a particular topic and present the very
recent data related to it. The round table will include
a maximum of four papers and time for discussion.
INTERACTIVE SESSIONS
These sessions will last 90 minutes and present case
discussions with a questioner and a panel of
experts. Attendees will be given the possibility to
interact actively via a voting system with the faculty of
the session.
DEBATES
Debates last for 60 minutes and are designed to
cover controversial issues of a particular topic. The
moderator will allow a short introduction for each
topic by the respective opponents followed by a
discussion on the arguments proposed. Comments,
arguments, and questions from the floor are
welcomed during the discussion.
These 90 minutes lasting sessions present detailed material on a chosen topic. Courses are designed to emphasize learning experiences that actively involve participants and include an opportunity for informal exchange
with the faculty.
POST GRADUATE COURSES
The postgraduate courses last for 90 minutes.
Courses are designed to present advanced materials
on a specific topic. In addition, the latest scientific
progress will be reviewed and evaluated in a format
that actively involves the participants, and includes
opportunities for discussions and informal interaction
with the faculty.
PODIUM SESSIONS
Podium Sessions will present the best quality papers
accepted for the Congress by the Scientific Committee that will focus on special topics presenting the
very recent findings in this field. Each session will last
90 minutes and are intended to 10 talks per session.
Each presentation is limited to 7 minutes followed by
3 minutes of discussion.
MODERATED POSTER SESSIONS
POINT-COUNTERPOINT SESSIONS
These sessions are organized to address one controversial issue of a topic. The moderator will allow a
brief introduction for each topic by the respective
opponents followed by a discussion on the arguments
proposed.

Authors are invited to present their new research findings or important ongoing research as posters. The
most interesting ones will be combined by topics and
moderated in a 90 minutes lasting session. Each
session consists of a maximum of 15 talks of the same
field. Each presentation is limited to 4 minutes followed by 2 minutes of discussion.

Symposia organized by the Industry
Symposia organized by the Industry in consultation
with the Scientific Committee will be presented at the
afternoon on Sunday, 4 December 2005 before the
Opening Ceremony as well as on Monday, 5 and
Tuesday, 6 December 2005.
Luncheon Symposia organized by the Industry
Symposia organized by the Industry in consultation
with the Scientific Committee will be presented at the
lunch time on Monday, 5 December and Tuesday, 6
December 2005. Participants will be provided with a
lunchbox at the beginning of the symposium.
CME (CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION)
This Congress has been submitted for UEMS accreditation to the European Accreditation Council for
Continuing
Medical
Education
(EACCME).
Physicians will be accredited with 15 CME credits for
the whole period of the congress.
EACCME credits are recognized by the American
Medical Association towards Physician's Recognition
Award (PRA).
To convert EACCME credit to AMA PRA category
1 credit, contact the AMA.
You will find the UEMS evaluation forms in your
personal documents. Please fill them in and leave
them at the ESSM booth in the exhibition area at the
end of the Congress. The ESSM Secretariat will send
the certificate after the Congress.
MEETING AWARDS
The best preclinical and clinical presentations will be
awarded with EUR 2.000 by ESSM’s Award Committees.

The ESSM Prestigious Awards
The Executive Committee of ESSM has established
two awards to be presented during the annual meetings of the society.
n The ESSM Career Award
for distinguished contribution in Sexual Medicine
This award will be given to a senior scientist with
outstanding contribution in the field. The
Executive Committee has made the decision and
the award will be presented during the Opening
Ceremony.
n The ESSM Award of Excellence
for exceptional achievements in Sexual Medicine
Research
This award is given annually to a young
scientist with exceptional achievements in the
field. Eligable applicants are scientists under the
age of 40 with significant contribution to the field.
This year a prize will be given separately in basic
and clinical research.
This Congress has been submitted for CME accreditation to the Italian Ministry of Health. Physicians will
be accredited. You will find the ECM evaluation
forms in your personal documents. Italian delegates
are asked to fill them in and leave them at the ESSM
booth in the exhibition area at the end of the
Congress. The ESSM Secretariat will send the
