WELCOME TO THE 9TH ESSM CONGRESS
Dear Colleagues,
I cordially welcome you to the 9th Congress of the European Society for Sexual
Medicine in Vienna, to be held from December 3 – 6, 2006.
The ESSM Congress is the most important event of our association and I am sure
that it will be a great success for several reasons.
S. Meryn
The first reason is the programme. The programme organised by the ESSM
Scientific Committee is very attractive for all practicing physicians with many
debates and lectures on the different fields of sexual medicine. You will also be
updated about all new technologies and treatments which will assist you in your
daily practice.
The second reason is the scientific one. The congress provides an excellent forum
for active participation of basic research and clinical scientists. All scientists, and
especially younger and more junior scientists, have been invited to submit
abstracts for oral and poster presentations. The congress schedule provides
ample opportunities for informal personal exchanges of ideas, data and findings,
which we hope will stimulate international collaborations.
The third reason is that Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in the world,
with a breathtaking range of social and entertainment opportunities, and is one
of the centres of European culture in the heart of Europe. We also invite your
partners to Vienna not to miss the opportunity to share with us a spectacular
social programme for the accompanying people which will be particularly prepared
for them.
In addition, 2006 we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, the most famous Austrian of all time. Austria is honouring this
musical genius with a rich and varied calendar of extraordinary concerts, festivals, galas, expos and special exhibitions in Vienna.

Dear ESSM Members,
Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Executive and Scientific Committee of ESSM, I would like to
welcome you to the 9th annual meeting of our Society in the beautiful city of
Vienna.
The scientific programme is outstanding and I am sure that you will all enjoy
attending the various sessions covering the hottest topics in the field of Sexual
Medicine. I am particularly grateful to the Chairman and Members of the
Scientific Committee of ESSM who have devoted a significant amount of energy
in organizing the best possible programme for you.

We received the highest number of abstracts in the history of ESSM and we did
our best to select those who would capture your interest and would stimulate a
lively discussion.
During the meeting in Vienna, you will have the opportunity to attend the scientific sessions organized in collaboration with a number of sister Scientific
Societies. This will give our meeting the widest international scientific breath.
Our Society has been growing fast and I am proud to inform you that we
currently have 19 National Societies of Sexual Medicine officially affiliated to
ESSM. The future success of ESSM is certainly based on the capacity to spread
our scientific knowledge as much as possible throughout whole Europe, in the
ultimate interest of the best possible patients' care.
I would finally like to thank Prof. Siegfried Meryn and all members of the
Organizing Committee for the hard work done in organizing an elegant meeting, allowing us to taste the Vienna atmosphere which culminates at Christmas

The congress language is English. Simultaneous translation will not be provided.
Congress Documentation
The ESSM will offer its members to view parts of the
scientific schedule online through a web-based
system from the new ESSM homepage. Therefore
several lectures will be filmed during the congress.

and technical reasons we kindly ask the speakers not
to use their own notebook. Several PC working stations
are provided in the speakers centre where speakers
can also work on their PC charts in a quiet area.

A major technical exhibition will take place on the
first floor of the Hofburg Congress Center next to the
main meeting rooms. Coffee bars and catering stations
will be set up at various areas in the technical exhibition. For further information, please see page 55.

Speakers Centre and Lounge
The speakers centre and lounge is located in the
Erzherzog Karl Saal on the ground floor.
Speakers are asked to hand in their CD ROM or USB
stick, containing the PowerPoint presentation (IBM
format or compatible, no multisession) preferably one
day before their presentation but at the latest
90 minutes prior to the presentation. The presentation
will be transferred to the central congress server and

Poster Exhibition
Press
The moderated posters will be located in and in
front of the Forum. All moderated poster sessions will
take place in the Forum. The moderated posters in the
room will be changed daily according to the sessions.
The press centre is set up in the Maria Theresien
Appartments on the first floor of the Hofburg
Congress Centre. It is open from Monday,
4 December through Wednesday, 6 December 2006.
The press centre is managed by the press agency
FCB Events & PR.
The unmoderated posters will be sited in the
Gardehalle I and II next to the main meeting rooms
Forum and Prinz Eugen Saal and the registration
counter on the ground floor of the Hofburg.
All moderated and unmoderated posters will be displayed during the whole conference. They will be
arranged according to topics and will be numbered
within the topics. The poster exhibition is open to all
participants:

Poster CD ROM
A CD ROM including all poster presentations will be
produced and all delegates will receive the poster CD
ROM by post after the congress. All poster authors
who have not yet submitted their poster are kindly
asked to do so electronically either on CD ROM or on
USB stick at the speakers centre.
Internet Centre
Several Internet terminals are available to all delegates at the exhibition area at the Entreezimmer of the
Hofburg Congress Center. The Internet centre is
accessible according to the opening hours of the
exhibition.
Messages
A message board will be available at the registration
area of the congress.
Restaurants
During the congress on Monday and Tuesday a complimentary snack buffet will be offered during lunch
time for all registered congress delegates. Various
restaurants and typical Viennese Cafés can be found
in walking distance of the congress venue.
Coffee Breaks
Coffee and tea are served during the morning and
afternoon coffee breaks from Monday, 4 December
to Wednesday, 6 December 2006 free of charge to all
participants wearing congress name badges. Various
coffee stations are located in the exhibition area of
the Hofburg Congress Center.
Cloakroom
A cloakroom is available next to the registration
counter on the ground floor. You can also store your
luggage here.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Bank
Insurance
An ATM/cash machine is located outside the Hofburg
Congress Center at the Michaelerplatz within two
minutes walking distance.
The congress fee does not include insurance. All participants are advised to arrange for their own insurance.
Health and accident insurance is recommended and
has to be purchased in your country of residence. The
organisers will not be responsible for a loss or damage of personal belongings.
Currency
The Euro is the official currency in Austria. Exchange
of foreign currency is available at the Vienna Airport
and at most hotels, banks and exchange offices
throughout the city.
Electricity
Austria uses a 230 volt 50Hz system. Sockets have
the European standard and plugs are two-prong
grounded.
Airport
Vienna International Airport – Schwechat is in 15 km
distance to the city centre. The express direct train
CAT departs every 30 minutes from the International
Airport to the Vienna city centre and takes 16 minutes.
A one way ticket costs EUR 9. Within Vienna the
Hofburg is easy accessible by public transportation.
The taxi fare from the airport to any of the congress
hotels and congress venue is expected to be approximately EUR 50.
Lost and Found
A lost and found service is available at the Hofburg
Congress Center Information located in the entrance
foyer of the congress venue.
Car Park
Parking space is available next to the Hofburg
Congress Center and participants arriving by car are
advised to use these facilities. Parking fees are not
included in the registration fee.
Mobile Phones
Participants are kindly requested to keep their mobile
phones turned off while attending the scientific
sessions in the meeting rooms.
Program Changes
The organisers cannot assume liability for any
changes in the congress program due to external or
unforeseen circumstances.
Taxis
Taxis are available upon demand in front of the
entrance of the Hofburg Congress Center.
Participants can also call taxis at the Hofburg
Congress Center information counter in the entrance
foyer.

Public Transportation Pass
How to get to the
Hofburg Congress Center
Registered participants receive a public transportation
pass in exchange for a voucher which is included in
the participants’ congress materials. The congress
materials can be picked up at the congress counter
upon arrival. The public transportation pass is valid
for all public transportation during the congress
period, i.e. from Sunday, 3 December 2006 through
Wednesday, 6 December 2006. Vienna’s public transportation system includes subways, trams and buses.
Most of the hotels available are located in the city
centre and are easy to be reached by public transportation from the congress venue.

The tour continues to Schönbrunn Palace. The former
summer residence of the Habsburg family with its
more than 1400 state rooms and the extensive park
is a splendid example of Baroque culture. A 45-minutes highlight tour takes you to 22 splendid rooms,
such as the Grand Gallery and the Chinese Cabinets.
After the tour there will be some free time to explore
one of the nicest Christmas Markets in Vienna, called
Ehrenhof right in front of the palace, this includes a
16 m high illuminated Christmas tree. The Christmas
market invites to stroll around the market, taste some
hot wine and Austrian Christmas cookies or buy some
Christmas gifts there.
On the way back the tour passes by the Belvedere
Palace, the former summer residence of Prince
Eugen, which houses the largest Gustav Klimt collection in the world.

Structure of the Scientific Program
The scientific program is structured according to
days. Per day it is structured by time and room. All
presenters are listed by name and the title of their
presentation.
Structure of the Abstract Book
The abstract book is structured by session format.
The listing starts with the podium session followed
by the moderated poster sessions. Hereafter the
unmoderated posters are listed according to
topics.
FORMAT DESCRIPTIONS
Master Lecture
Debates
Each lecture of 30 minutes will be given by a distinguished and renowned expert and will be devoted to
a specific topic of major interest.
Debates last for 60 minutes and are designed to cover
controversial issues of a particular topic. The moderator will allow a short introduction for each topic by
the respective opponents followed by a discussion on
the arguments proposed. Comments, arguments,
and questions from the floor are welcomed during
the discussion.
Round Table
These sessions will usually last 90 minutes. They will
focus on a particular topic and present the very latest
data related to it. The round table will include a maximum of four papers and time for discussion.
Best Papers
A selection of the year’s original scientific publications
of particular importance for a specific topic within
sexual medicine will be highlighted by the chairpersons during 90 minutes. Each paper will be briefly
summarized and discoveries or other information of
special interest will be given attention in relation to
current knowledge and future perspectives.
Interactive Sessions
These sessions will last 90 minutes and present case
discussions with a questioner and a panel of
experts. Attendees will be given the possibility to
interact actively via a voting system with the faculty of
the session.
Point-Counterpoint Sessions
These sessions are organized to address one controversial issue of a topic. The moderator will allow a
brief introduction for each topic by the respective
opponents followed by a discussion on the arguments proposed.
Instructional Courses
These 90 minutes sessions present a detailed account
of a chosen topic. Courses are designed to provide
learning experiences that actively involve participants
and will include an opportunity for informal exchange
with the faculty.

Symposia organized by the Industry
Podium Sessions will present the best abstract papers
accepted for the congress by the Scientific
Committee and will focus on specific topics presenting the very latest findings in this field. Each session
will last 90 minutes and will consist of max. 10 presentations per session. Each presentation is limited to 7
minutes followed by 2 minutes of discussion.
Symposia organised by the Industry in consultation
with the Scientific Committee will be presented at the
afternoon on Sunday, 3 December 2006 before the
Gala Opening and on Monday, 4 December 2006 and
Tuesday, 5 December 2006 during lunchtime and in
the late afternoon.
CME (Continuing Medical Education)
Moderated Poster Sessions
Authors were invited to submit papers on their latest
research findings or important ongoing research. The
moderated poster sessions were selected by the
Scientific Committee based on a review of all abstract
submissions. The most interesting posters are grouped by topic and presented in a 90-minute moderated session. Each session will consist of a maximum of
15 talks in the same general field. Each presentation
is limited to 4 minutes followed by 2 minutes of
discussion.
Posters
Authors were invited to submit papers on their latest
research findings or important ongoing research.
Posters were selected by the Scientific Committee
based on the review of all abstract submissions. The
most interesting posters are grouped into one of
16 general areas of research. The poster exhibition is
scheduled from Monday, 4 December, 2006 to
Wednesday, 6 December 2006 and will take place at
the Gardehalle I and II on the ground floor of the
Hofburg.
Video Surgery Course
The Video Surgery Course on Sunday, 3 December
2006, will last 120 minutes, each video has a duration
of 10 to 15 minutes. A panel of selected experts will
present surgical videos showing different techniques
and approaches and will discuss the details with the
participants.
This congress has been submitted for UEMS accreditation to the European Accreditation Council for
Continuing Medical Education (EACCME). Physicians
will be accredited with CME credits for the whole
period of the congress.
EACCME credits are recognised by the American
Medical Association towards Physician's Recognition
Award (PRA).

The ESSM Prestige Awards
The Executive Committee of ESSM decided to establish two awards to be presented during the annual
meetings of the society:
The ESSM Career Award
This award will be presented to a senior scientist
who has made an outstanding contribution in the
field. The Executive Committee has decided for
an award winner. The award winner will be presented during the Opening Ceremony.
The ESSM Award of Excellence
This award is presented annually to a young
scientist who has accomplished exceptional
achievement in the field. Eligible applicants are
physicians and scientists under the age of 40 with
significant contribution to the field.
EASM Fellowship Program and
Introductory Course
The European Academy of Sexual Medicine (EASM) is
a not-for-profit educational organisation with its
objective “to establish, harmonise and maintain standards for the education and practice of sexual medicine throughout Europe”. It was established as a
wholly independent body and with the full support of
the European Society for Sexual Medicine and the
European Federation of Sexology. One of its principal
aims is to establish a respected and academically rigorous qualification in sexual medicine for medical practitioners, the Fellowship of the EASM. The Fellowship
Program is open to candidates who are registered
medical practitioners, holding a specialist qualification
in an appropriate speciality, including family medicine/general practice. The fellowship will be awarded
to those who, following a prescribed period of professional training and practical experience, and attendance at approved structured courses, pass the required
examination and assessments. It is anticipated that
the first intake of candidates to the Fellowship
Programme will take place in December 2006 and
that the first introductory course will be held during
the ESSM 2006 Congress in Vienna. It is hoped that
the program will eventually be available in all
European countries, and be delivered in all European
languages. Initially, it will be available in English and
possibly in a limited number of other languages
according to demand and availability of learning/teaching opportunities.

Throughout the world, Vienna has a reputation as the capital of music. The ESSM opening ceremony 2006
will be a celebration in honours of the unrivalled musical genius WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART, whose
250th birthday falls in 2006.
This extraordinary evening event dedicated to the probably most famous Austrian will be the social highlight of the 9th ESSM Congress besides the outstanding scientific program.
The welcome speeches from Prof. Montorsi, president of the ESSM and Prof. Meryn, local president of
the 9th congress of the European Society for Sexual Medicine will be accompanied by unique interpretations by members of the
World famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Ballett
will be presented in the Festsaal at the Hofburg.
The music ensemble “Mozart Sinfonietta Wien” was founded in 1988 in Vienna, one of the most important cities in the life of Wolfgang Amadeus. This Viennese orchestra is dedicated not only to the performance of music by W. A. Mozart. Important part of its work is to find and perform new definitions of the
semantic contents in Mozart’s music.
Members of the “Mozart Sinfonietta Wien” are excellent musicians from the world famous Viennese
Symphonic Orchestras, mainly from the Vienna Philharmonic. All these brilliant musicians bring their large
experience and knowledge in to the work of the orchestra. At the same time traditional and evolutional,
the “Mozart Sinfonietta Wien” brings the genius of Mozart’s music close to its audience.
September 2005 marked a new departure for the Ballet of the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper, when
merging the previously completely separate ensembles of the two opera houses. This new policy will
enable the restructured ensemble to preserve the centuries-old tradition of the Vienna ballet as one of the
oldest and most legendary institutions in the filed of this genre.
The vienna waltz project was founded by soloist and dancers of the world famous Ballet of the Vienna
State Opera. To bring the fascination of creative dance performances to people all over the world is the
goal for the innovative work of these artists. Starting from classical ballet on highest level all sectors, stiles and forms of the art of dancing are developed. Modern dance, Vienna waltzes, Rap, Dance shows or
solo-ballet, Kuala Lumpur or Wolfgang-See – the vienna waltz project covers a big variation of performance styles and places. In Canada, the US, Moscow, Mallorca – everywhere these dancers conquer their
audience with innovative dance.
A multicoloured collage of dance and music, as animated and multifaceted as the life of Mozart himself
will ensure an unforgettable evening. At the end of the opening ceremony all participants are invited to
join a specially arranged Welcome Reception.
