Workshop F: „How to join IT education and research?”

WorkshopF:„HowtojoinITeducationandresearch?”
Chairs: Thomas Kern, Stephan Winkler Research and development activities are considered great opportunities for the improvement and development of IT education within a university. Scientific staff members have to perform the bal‐
ancing act between the different requirements of challenging research and high‐quality teaching. Therefore, the intention of this workshop is on the one hand to give participants a platform to pre‐
sent the R&D strategies of their respective universities with focus on the benefit in education, and on the other hand to discuss the different approaches, their strengths and their weaknesses within a peer group. Participants are invited to contribute their presentations, experience reports and demonstrations. For example, at the UAS School of Informatics/Communications/Media professors, research associ‐
ates and students work together in several, primarily application‐oriented research projects. Rele‐
vant IT‐topics from business, industry, science and society determine our R&D priorities. The primary goals of our research and development activities at the Research Center Hagenberg are practical research, the transfer of scientific knowledge from basic research to solutions of real‐world prob‐
lems of our partners on the one hand and to improved education topics for our students on the oth‐
er, as well as the continuous expansion of a strong network of (inter‐)national universities and re‐
search institutions. We try to implement a so‐called Innovation Chain as an iterative and incremental process that passes through the four elements Education, R&D, Application and Transfer (see figure below) to generate benefit for our cooperation partners as well as for our students. Details of this concept will be presented as one of the contributions during the workshop.
