Now let’s get down to the business of how to play soccer.
What exactly are these 10 steps?
These 10 steps consist of lessons, tips and drills that are meant to be practiced and applied all by
yourself. There is no need of any team-mates or friends. It is designed in such a way because lot of
beginners are shy of practicing in front of others as they feel their game is not up to the mark.
Another advantage of ‘practice-by-yourself’ drills is that they allow you to focus on one particular
aspect and hence increase the number of repetitions, thereby leading to an effective practice
routine.

Recruiting
An Open Space With a Wall
captainu.com
The ideal place to practice would be a plain open space that has some kind of barrier like a wall,
garage or a fence, strong enough for the ball to rebound off of it. This is very important, as many
of the drills require you to kick the ball against a solid surface in such a way that the ball returns
to you.

Soccer Shoes
Do not just use any shoes. Shoes designed specifically for soccer can make a huge difference
when it comes to developing a touch. Also, these shoes are designed in a way to fit your foot like
a glove, which is very important as any extra space between your foot and the shoe can prove to
be hindrance in learning lot of techniques.
Now, depending on the kind of surface that you will be practicing on, you will require different
types of soccer shoes, either indoor soccer shoes or outdoor soccer cleats.
You can check out the following lists of our top 5 recommended shoes for both the categories-

How to use this guide?
There are two different ways to use this guide –
The first way is to go step by step. That is, do not go to the next step till the time you have mastered
the previous one. Each step is accompanied by an objective at the end. Once you achieve that
particular objective, you can move onto the next step. This would be the ideal way, as it makes sure
you fully develop the requisite skill before progressing onto the next skill.
However, this approach takes a lot of discipline as you might find yourself getting bored of doing
only one drill again and again. But if you are fine with that aspect, then this is hands down the fastest
approach to learn soccer.
The other approach is to split your practice routine by incorporating three different drills. You can
allot a set amount of time for each drill and once that is achieved, move on to the next drill. I would
not recommend practicing more than 2-3 drills a day as that can lead to a loss of focus.
So suppose you are a complete beginner and decide to start from the ‘Basic Steps’ module. You
decide that you will have a one hour practice routine. In this case, you can split the 60 minutes into
three 20 minutes slots where you practice the three steps for 20 minutes each. Once you have a
particular step mastered you can incorporate the next step into your schedule.
This approach will keep the boredom out, but will also reduce the amount of time you are spending
on one particular drill, hence leading to a loss of focus.
At the end of the day, it is up to you to decide which approach works the best for you. You can come
up with your own schedule, as long as you remember the principle of focus. Your schedule should
never have too many drills in the same day, even if you are practicing for 2-3 hours. The key is

always to master the steps as fast as possible without affecting the quality of your learning.

FAQ
Q. I’m not a complete beginner. I do know how to play a bit, but would want to improve my game.
Do I still need to start from the Basic Steps?
A. No, not at all. The first three steps are for absolute beginners. If you know how to pass, shoot and
dribble, then you can start straight away from the Advanced module, i.e., from step 4. However, I
would still advise you to go through the first three steps as there are a lot of tips, lessons, techniques
and player analysis mentioned in each of those steps, which can help you understand the game
better.
Q. Do I need to practice these steps every day?
A. Ideally speaking, yes. But sometimes it is not possible to practice because of various reasons. So
that is completely fine. What is important is that you should be consistent in your practice, even if
you can only do it a few times a week.
Q. How long should I practice?
A. Again, it is entirely up to you. Of course, the more the better. But we would recommend at least
three 1 hour sessions in a week. For every step, we have mentioned the minimum amount of time
that should be spent when that step is practiced.
So now that you know how to use this guide, let’s get started straight away.
