One of the most popular countries in the world in which to get married, Italy has relatively
simple legalities and offers some of the most beautiful locations in the world in which to

An official translator must be present at the civ il ceremony if both parties are not Italian.
The marriage must take place in a building with a roof and not outdoors.

How to get a m arriage licence
You must provide a Certificate of No Impediment to marry (Nulla Ostra) which is
usually issued by your embassy in Italy or your local department of Foreign Affairs
To obtain this you will need to produce birth certificates, full passports and photocopies,
decree nisi or death certificate if div orced or widowed and deed poll showing any change
of name in order to obtain the Certificate of No Impediment (Nulla Ostra).
Generally the Italian Authorities prefer to have two Sundays pass after receiv ing the
Nulla Ostra before issuing a marriage licence, although sometimes this time can be
shortened.

Full birth certificates with a certified translation.
Certificate of No Impediment” (Nulla Ostra) which can be issued by your Consulate for
the area in which you are to marry.
If y ou have been divorced then your first marriage certificate and the final divorce
papers must be shown with a certified translation. Brides must have been divorced for at
least 300 days in order to remarry.
If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown
with a certified translation.

Residency requirem ents: you must live in France for at least 40 days before you can
hav e a legally binding wedding. However, it is possible to do the legalities in y our home
country and have a blessing in France.
How to get a m arriage licence
At least one of the couple must have liv ed in the town where you wish to marry for at least
thirty days, then you must bring the papers mentioned below to the Town Hall (Marie)
where the marriage will take place not more than three months before the marriage date.
A notice of your intent to marry (banns) must be posted at the Town Hall for ten days
before you can marry.

Birth certificates issued less than three months ago, and v alid ten-year passports certified
and translated by an approved translator and notarised with an apostille stamp.
Two proofs of domicile if you live in France eg. Utility bills.
Certificates to prove that you are single (obtained from your Embassy in France).
A declaration that you are free to marry must be sworn in front of an attorney licensed to
practice both in France and in your country of residence. (Affidavit of Law)
Medical certificates issued less than three months before the wedding by a doctor in
France.

Your intent to marry notice must be posted at the Consulate for twenty one day s before

V alid ten-year passports.
Proof that the bride and groom are free to marry – a Consular certificate of No

stating your place of residence for the last six years and your temporary residence in

wedding legalities are much easier than neighbouring Spain. So if you’re dreaming of a

Between three months and six weeks before you wish to marry you must request
the publication of marriage banns at the Public Registry (form RZ1 ). You will need to
prov ide: Birth certificates showing parents’ names, identity cards and copies, a copy of the
identity cards of the witnesses.
You must also prov ide a Declaration on Oath (form RZ2) signed in the presence of a
Commissioner for Oaths with their personal seal attached to the form.
You must also provide the following information for the Marriage Registrar: The church
or place where the marriage will be held, the marriage date, the name of the priest who
will celebrate the marriage ceremony and the surname which the bride will be using after
marriage.
Ten day s before the ceremony the couple must collect the documents prepared by the
Marriage Registry and give them to the Marriage Officer/Parish Priest where they are to
be married.
