This video will take you on a short tour of the Future Learn experience, highlighting
the key things you need to know to use the site easily.
Welcome to FutureLearn where you can enjoy courses online for free from leading UK
and international universities. There is a diverse range of courses on offer at
FutureLearn, from forensic science to Shakespeare. The list is growing every week.
To find out more about a course, just click on the course title or the more button. The
trailers will tell you most of the things you need to know, but the course page also
shows you when the course starts, how many weeks it runs for, and roughly how much
of your time the course will take. Don't forget, once the course has started, you can
study it anytime and anywhere that suits you. There are no scheduled class times or
room numbers to find, as it's all online.
If you haven't taken any courses on FutureLearn before, you'll need to register first.
Sign in to FutureLearn by clicking the pink sign in button in the top right corner of the
screen. This will take you to a page that lists all of the courses you've signed up for so
far.
The navigation of the site is really easy. Click on the steps icon in the top left corner
to reveal your course navigation. This is where you can see your To Do list for the
course you're in, any recent activity on this course, and track your progress. Click the
icon in the top right corner to reveal your own personal navigation. This is where you
can see and change your profile, see the list of all the courses you've signed up for,
unsubscribe from courses, and change your settings, or, if you're finished, you can sign
out.
The main FutureLearn menu is hidden when you're in a course, so as not to distract
you while you're learning. However, you can easily get back to it by clicking the small
grey tab in the centre of the page.
The To Do list gives you an overview of all the steps in the week you're on. You can
change the week by clicking on the week number, to see what's coming up or go back
to weeks you haven't finished yet. The pink arrow above the week shows you which
week you're currently looking at. The weeks will fill in as the course progresses.
When you've finished a step, just click the pink Mark As Complete button to be able to
see at a glance which steps you've completed on your To Do list, and so we can show
you how much you've done on your progress page. The things you've marked as
complete will go blue, and the next thing to do is always highlighted in pink.

Remember, if at any time you want to go back to the To Do list, just click the steps
icon in the top left corner and select the To Do list from the panel.
Anyone on a course can comment and discuss the course material with other learners.
To see all the comments on a particular step, click the pink speech bubble icon and
the comments will be revealed. The number next to this icon tells you how many
comments are in the thread. Don't forget, whilst robust debate is encouraged, it's
important to be respectful of your fellow learners and follow the FutureLearn code of
conduct.
If you want to see recent activity on the course, just open the left navigation and click
the activity link. If you're following someone, you can filter this list to show the
comments of people you're following or see if anyone has replied to a comment you've
made.
We encourage learners to practise what they've learned through quizzes. Quizzes
don't count toward your course score.
The test rules and grading are outlined at the beginning of each test. When you're
doing a test, if you get the answer wrong, the educator will usually give you a hint and
encourage you to try again. Your score is reflected in your course progress page.
You can see how far you've progressed through a course and what you've scored on
tests by opening the left navigation and clicking the progress link.
On some courses, we offer you the option to purchase a statement of participation,
which comes in the form of a printed certificate. To be eligible, you must have
completed at least 50% of the steps on the course.
