I was the first in the US to research, refine and implement radiofrequency thermal ablation of the prostate putting minimally invasive therapy on the map. I am the inventor and holder of the first patent demonstrating splitting of a radiofrequency energy wave into two RF energies in phase for dual functionality in endoscopic surgery (tissue cutting and coagulation). I have made advances in technology and surgical technique of various thermal and laser ablation therapy of the prostate that have positively impacted many patients around the world. In addition, I am currently actively engaged in prostate cancer surgical outcome research (urinary incontinence post-‐prostatectomy -‐ JAMA 2011) and in epidemiology particularly as it relates to risk factors (LDL in prostate cancer and African Americans -‐ Journal of Urology 2009). There are currently six categorical residents (3 Chief Residents and 3 PGY-‐2 residents) under my supervision per year. This constitutes ongoing daily teaching and supervision of clinical activities (inpatients and outpatients) as well as in operating rooms. In addition, I have organized a number of formal teaching activities at designated Clinical Urology Conference (1 ½ hours), GU Radiology Conference (1 hour) and GU Pathology conference (1 hour). Emory University Urology Residency Program (Transitional) 2000-‐-‐ I started a non-‐accredited, transitional residency program (two additional residents per year) to provide a unique educational and training opportunity and to grow our residency program. These clinical appointments at PGY 1 and 2 levels are primarily designed for candidates who wish to gain experience in clinical urology and research in order to be more competitive for the categorical urology residency match. I offer them an opportunity to participate in research and authorship of abstracts and papers. In addition to the training, the residents receive mentorship that assists them to make the right career decisions in line with their personality, capability and academic performance. The program attracts residents from all over the U.S. and abroad. To date, 20 residents have successfully completed this program. The positive impact of this program has been and continues to be significant. This program has provided a foundation to formally expand our Emory Urology categorical residency program (which is currently under consideration by the Residency Review Committee).
