Who are the builders of the program?
The design and publishing program has been
developed by teachers with many years of industry traning and workplace experience in publishing houses, advertising agencies, design studios
and educational institutions.

What if I change my mind?
After the student has completed the grade 11
courses of the “Pathway“, there is considerable
flexibility to permit a change into other career
paths without encountering any difficulty.
Information Communications Technology (ITC)
skills and knowledge are invaluable no matter
what alterative career choice you make. Everyone from student to employee needs to present
their ideas or concepts at some point.
This program is designed to train students how
to present their ideas, skills and knowledge in a
professional and real time manner effectively.

is
a
Specialist High Skills Major
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)
offers students in any career path the
opportunity to explore Design & Publishing.
This red seal program was created by
professionals, sponsored by the Ontario Ministry
of Education and recognized by post secondary
institutions [Universities and Colleges].
The purpose is for students to acquire
skills, knowledge and experience that will
best assist them in their post secondary
pathway or to enter the workplace.

What is studied in the SHSM courses?
Grade 11 courses will introduce students to
industrial software and hardware used in the graphic
arts industry. Design techniques will be examined
and how applied art is practiced from a professional
perspective.
Software and equipment list include:
• Design software include Adobe Creative Suite (PhotoShop, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, Flash, Dreamweaver) • iMove/Final Cut Pro • Offset Printing Presses
• Pre Press Imaging • Bindery Equipment
Areas to be covered in Publishing:
The design and publishing course will examine Media
Publishing, Web Publishing and Print Publishing with
emphasis on industrial practices & applications.
Grade 12 courses will emphasize hands on training for Level 2 on the above software and equipment
supplemented by a two credit co-op placements.
The program will focus on a “Project Driven” curriculum, allowing students to develop their skills and
knowledge by creating a professional portfolios.
Students will be encouraged to compete in skills competitions. Competitions allow student to compete at a
higher level and discover their potential skills.

What are the benefits in taking a SHSM?
• A program allowing students to experience a range
of customized learning opportunities in an area that
interests them, and helps to engage them in other
school activities.
• An articulated entry into University or College programs that are design & publishing related
• A template for their post secondary career plans
• An awareness of the many different post secondary
vocations, salaries and benefits one can reach in the
industry today
• The acquisition of life-long learning skills
• The enhancement of employment skills
• Throughout the program, students begin to establish
relationships and networks in their chosen field.
• Four exit directions from high school: College, University, Apprenticeship or Workplace.
• Co-op placement for on the job experience and real
time practical knowledge
• Students who have earned an SHSM can provide
evidence of their achievement, (e.g., red seal on
diploma identifiying the SHSM program, sectorrecognized certifications and training programs) to
prospective employers and postsecondary education
or training institutions.
