Cascadia Commons Community
4377 SW 94th Avenue
Portland, OR 97225
A neighborhood planned, designed,
and operated by residents.
What is cohousing?
Cohousing is a concept of neighborhood
that offers an answer for people who prefer
a convenient and spontaneous social life to
the complication and isolation of typical
modern living. It provides a means for a
group of varied, previously unacquainted
people to create a village where they can
have both community and privacy in the
amounts they choose. Cohousing offers the
values of an old-fashioned neighborhood:
safety, interdependence, and mutual concern.
Our community
Cascadia Commons is a community of
diverse residents located at the intersection
of Southwest 94th Avenue and Meadow
Lane in the Raleigh Hills–West Slope
neighborhood of Southwest Portland.
Only two blocks from Beaverton-Hillsdale
Highway, the community is within walking
distance of bus lines, restaurants, shopping,
and schools. Its two clusters of townhouses
and apartments surround grassy common
areas, vegetable gardens, a play structure,
and a common house (community center),
and are connected by a footbridge over a
small stream.
The 3400-square-foot common house has
space for cooking and dining where residents
can share meals, as well as special spaces
for children, guests, recreation, hobbies,
laundry, and reading.
Residents have the privacy of individual
homes as well as the advantages of
community with neighbors. Homes
are all individually owned or rented as
condominiums, and common spaces and the
common house are owned (or rented) jointly.
Pedestrian-oriented, the community has a
lesser impact on the environment due to the
smaller size of individual homes, the use of
eco-friendly building materials, the lack of
driveways between homes, and minimization
of asphalt. It is a child-friendly, diverse
community that includes singles, couples,
and families from ages 1 to 80.
We are realizing our vision of a self-governing
community, using a consensus decisionmaking process, and we have built a physical
environment that supports this vision. The
community operates as a condominium
association and homeowners pay monthly
dues. Collaborative efforts and involvement
among residents reduce the maintenance and
operating costs funded by dues.
Members of Cascadia Commons are those
who own or rent a home in the community,
or are in the process of purchasing a home.
Members have a voice in discussions of
community issues and particpate in consensus
decisions; all homeowners are members of
the homeowners association board. We invite
others to get to know us and consider joining
us in shaping the community.
Our homes
The homes in Cascadia include two- and
three-bedroom townhouses, and one- and
two-bedroom flats. Interior floor space ranges
from 700 to 1400 square feet. The purchase
and rental costs of individual residences varies
according to size. Descriptions and prices for
currently available homes are posted on our
website.
Getting to know us
The best way to learn more about
Cascadia is to attend one of our periodic
community information sessions and
tours. Participating with us in a common
meal, attending a homeowners association
meeting, or coming to our frequent social
events are also excellent ways to get to
know the residents of the community and
observe how we govern ourselves. Please
call our phone line, visit our website, or
send and email message for information
about the next tour, meal, meeting, or
social gathering.
