have added some great ideas for shedding pounds and eating well balanced meals to get you to your goal.
For teens, we have assembled the perfect “Sweet Summer Kick-Off” party. Join us on June 17, at the

If your spouse will soon be a returning deployer, you must enter him/
her into the “Homecoming Home Makeover”, sponsored by 60th Force

deserves his own “Man Cave”, her own “Ladies
Loft” (or a romantic bedroom makeover). One

We haven’t forgotten about Mom and Dad as we

has a wide variety of gifts for the cool graduate in your life.
20-Bluetooth Headset... We also found this great deal inside the Base Exchange. This
thoughtful gift communicates the message that it is still cool to be safe! It is comfortable

driving because of hands-free driving laws. Some of this headset’s incredible features
include call waiting, voice delay and its mini size make it extremely lightweight.

Family Child Care
Dyaisha Brown…
Providing with Excellence!
There are a ton of hard working moms out there.
Whether they work at home, at an office or in the military, all of them
deserve to be recognized for what they do. In honor of Mother’s Day,
FAM and Family Child Care (FCC) wanted to highlight one special mom
who works hard providing excellent child care for Team Travis.
Dyaisha Brown runs Little Caterpillar’s Day Care out of her home.
She was recognized by FCC as an excellent child care provider. She was
chosen because of her commitment to her profession and her excellent skills and passion for her work. Dyaisha has been a FCC provider
since 2007. She has completed all her modules and also holds an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood. Dyaisha’s love for working with
children and the benefit of being able to stay at home with her children
while still helping to earn an income, encouraged her decision to take
on this career. “I love that I am able to provide a really excellent and
safe child care service for working parents. I am able to give back to
parents exactly what I would want if I was working out of the home;
a place where my kids can play and grow in a fun, loving and safe
environment.”
A typical day at Little Caterpillar’s Day Care includes a healthy breakfast followed by circle reading time. Then the children are invited to
play outside or take a walk to the park. After some free play time,
hungry appetites are settled with a nourishing lunch and then a peaceful nap. Once nap time is over, it is time for learning and skill building
games with puzzles or art projects. Dyaisha currently has one opening.
She currently accepts children 18 months to 5 years in age. She can be
reached at 437-4038.
If you would like more information on how you can start your career as
a family child care provider please contact Amy Stewart at 424-4596.
Any individual caring for other families’ children a total of more than 10
hours a week on a regular basis must be licensed to provide care in on-base
quarters, to include on or off-base privatized housing. Residents of base
housing who knowingly provide unlicensed childcare are in danger of losing
their base housing privileges.

FAM Fab Eats!
Guam Liberation Fiesta...Hearty & Healthy!
July 21st, Liberation Day, is a major Guam holiday. It celebrates the day
(July 21, 1944) when thousands of U.S. service members recaptured the
island of Guam from the Japanese during World War II. All Government
offices and most businesses are closed as the island celebrates with a day
of fiestas, carnivals and a parade down Marine Corps Drive in Hagatna.
Two of our FAM members insist that a huge part of the celebration of
Guam Liberation Day is the food. Eneksa Agaga (red rice), Pickled Papaya
and Finadeni (sauce for dipping or marinate) are some of the authentic
dishes that many *Chamorros enjoy. One of the staples of Chamorro
cuisine is the infamous Kelaguen Monuk or Chicken and Grated Coconut.
The taste is similar to the Central and South American dish, Ceviche. To
celebrate the arrival of summer, enjoy this meal with your favorite adult
beverage. So get out your flip-flops, heat up the grill and let’s get cooking! Biba Guahan! ”Long live” Guam!
Kelaguen served alongside Furikake Rice and Grilled Pork by FAM
* The Chamorro people, or Chamoru people, are the indigenous people of
the Mariana Islands, which include the American territory of Guam and the
United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Micronesia. Today, significant Chamoru populations also exist in several U.S. states
including Hawaii, California, Washington, Texas and Nevada.
(Http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamorro people)
Kelaguen Monuk (Chicken & Grated Coconut) serves 4-6 people
• 1 chicken baked or barbecued without spices
• 1 medium coconut grated (fresh if available)
• 1 -2 lemons (your preference to add to taste)
• 1 bunch green onions
• 3 Tbsp crushed or fresh red pepper (optional)
• Salt & pepper to taste
• Large mixing bowl
• Mixing spoon
• Knife and cutting board
Bake or barbecue chicken**
Remove skin from chicken and tear meat from bone (discard bones
and skin)
Chop chicken into small pieces (almost fine) and place in mixing bowl
Chop green onions and add to chicken mixture
Grate coconut and add to rest of mixture
Sprinkle liberally with lemon juice, salt & pepper
Add crushed pepper
Continue to season to taste, using salt, additional lemon juice and
crushed peppers, so that no one flavor overwhelms the others.
** Chicken can be substituted with fish, shrimp, beef or even SPAM!

Time Saving Tips: Living in the states, Chamorros don’t get to experience that laid back island life. Everything is fast paced in the states. To save
time, buy an already cooked plain rotisserie chicken (avoid the specialty flavored ones) at your local grocery store like the commissary. Also buy
(unsweetened) frozen shredded coconut to save more time.

How do you tell your mom that she
deserves the best “just because”?
Mother’s Day is in May but doesn’t your mom deserve
recognition throughout the year?
This contest was created to help mom understand that we
appreciate all of the wonderful contributions she makes to
her family throughout the year.
To show your mom how grateful you are, you could send
flowers…. you could send candy…. to tell the truth,
my own mom would prefer a lottery ticket. But with this
contest, you can showcase how your mom “rocks” by
sending us a short essay that describes why your mom
deserves to win.
We will publish your essay (so your mom can read it over
and over again) and a photo of you and your mom in the
next issue of the Quality of Life magazine.
To enter this contest, simply go online to TravisFSS.com,
click on the “My Mom’s the Bomb” contest link and send
us your essay.
Entries must be submitted by May 20.

Father’s
Day Tips
No Ties! Follow these tips!
Father’s Day, June 19, is just around the corner and we thought it was well
over due to give our Dad’s some love by offering USEFUL advice on just
what to get him! Some of you may have already found your gift for dad or
your husband, but will he like it?
Truth be told, Father’s Day isn’t that complicated at all. A majority of dads
don’t want or need gifts, at least not the kind you buy at the mall. There’s
one thing most dads want more than anything else, and it won’t cost you a
dime.
This gift means more to them than anything, it can’t be mass-produced and
won’t always be available to us. The perfect Father’s Day gift is time with
you!!
If you can’t come up with a clever gift idea for dad this year, good he
doesn’t need it, anyway. What he needs is to just spend time with you. Buy
Dad a card and go visit him or write down reasons why you and/or the kids
love him and put the notes in a jar to give him. You can take him to lunch
or to the park. He won’t care where you go as long as he’s with you. As
many of us in the military know it may not be possible to be with your dad
for his special day. If that is the case, take the “reasons you love your dad”
and put them in a letter you can mail, read over the phone or Skype.
The bottom line is to let him know just how much he means to you and how
appreciated he is. We don’t let them know often enough so take advantage
of this one day and make it all about HIM! Happy Father’s Day Dads!!!

Summer Fitness
Challenge
Shape Up for Summer with a
Personal Trainer!
Aretha Chandler
Summer is just around the corner
and that means less clothing and “yes” even bathing suits. If you’re not ready to bare your skin
just yet, why not get some help shaping your perfect summer body? The personal trainers at the
Travis Fitness Center are certified to assist you with your fitness goals. One amazing trainer, you
might want to check out is Ms Aretha Chandler. Aretha has been training and building healthy
bodies for the past 11 years. She is ACE certified and holds a Bachelors degree in Kinesiology
from Sacramento State University.
Aretha’s fitness motto is “A fitness instructor can guide an individual down the path to a healthy
lifestyle. The Individual has to have the desire, dedication, and determination to make the
change”; and that is exactly what her two new recruits have. Meet Kerryann Combs, an Air
Reserve Technician here at Travis Air Force Base, and Tosca Burell, a retired military member.
Both ladies are training with Aretha and have decided to embark on a summer fitness challenge.
Working with Aretha, Kerryann has already lost 15 pounds and several inches to her waist. Her
goal is to lose an additional 15 pounds before July. Tosca’s challenge is to noticeably tone up
her entire body. Tosca has already lost a significant amount of weight on her own, however she
is counting on Aretha to help her reach her final goal of lean muscle definition.
Stay tuned for the next issue of the Quality of Life magazine as we reveal “after” shots and the
results of Kerryann and Tosca’s Summer Fitness Challenge. You can join in the challenge too!
Just call the Fitness Center at 424-2008 and ask to make an appointment with Aretha or any
available personal trainer. The flat fee for training assistance is only $30 per session;
we challenge you to compare that rate to any other fitness facility in the area!
See you at the Gym!

Spouses
We hope you’ve noticed that at the A&FRC,
it’s Military Spouse Appreciation Day every day!
However, Military Spouse Appreciation Day became an official national celebration in 1984, when President Ronald
Reagan set aside the Friday before Mother’s Day to recognize the incredible contributions and sacrifices of those who
support and hold down the fort of our men and women in arms. To join in on the national party, and to take advantage
of another opportunity to show how honored we are to support such extraordinary wives and husbands; the A&FRC has
a special annual affair that’s all about thanking YOU! Join them on May 13, 11am-1pm, for lunch on us! Included are
prizes and a special surprise for military spouses of all ages, stages and branches of service! There will also be kids'
activities on site.
We know being a new military spouse is full of joys and challenges. There is so much to learn, and so many new friends
to meet! A&FRC’s fun, fast-paced Heart Link seminar will fill you in on all you need to know about Air Force life and help
you connect with several new friends. New and seasoned spouses who come to Heart Link leave educated, inspired and
more confident! You’ll finally understand Air Force customs and culture and how to translate all of those acronyms! Also,
you will receive education on leadership organization and structure, determine your Key Spouse and First Sergeant and
learn all about base resources, services and amenities. There will also be fabulous prizes and each spouse will receive
a very special gift to welcome you to our wonderful military family! Breakfast and lunch are provided and childcare
reimbursement is provided upon request. Don't miss this next great event on Saturday, May 21, 8:45am-3:00pm.
Is your active duty spouse deployed, on TDY at least 30 days or on a remote tour? Whether it’s your first or fiftieth
period of separation from your other half, it’s never easy, and each time apart is different. Take a breather and prepare
for an evening of fun and inspiration at the quarterly Deployed Spouses Dinner! You never know what kind of crazy
stuff we’ll get the leadership to do, and there are always great games and fabulous prizes! You’ll leave this event
encouraged, with spirits lifted and ready to face another day of separation with a smile. The next one will be held at The
Zone on Tuesday, June 21, 5:30-7:30pm for all spouses experiencing separation. Free childcare and a kid-friendly
dinner will be available on site gratis.

Summer Reading Program
June 21-July 19
A love for reading and books is one of the most precious gifts parents can give their children.
While knowing how to read is essential for day-to-day survival, loving to read opens new worlds for
children. By reading, children can visit people in different lands, fight fire-breathing dragons to save
a royal princess or learn how to build the perfect windmill. With you and Mitchell Memorial Library’s
commitment to reading, the possibilities are endless!
Mitchell Memorial Library’s summer reading program registration begins Jun 13th. Children are invited
to special story times and activities throughout the program. Plus! Look for special performances throughout
the summer reading program. Parents, don’t forget to ask about our reading programs for adults.
Call 424-5255 for more info.
