a Pre-Jordan class prior to the baptism. Please call the Rectory to
arrange the baptism ceremony and/or to register for Pre-Jordan
class.
SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Those hospitalized, seriously ill or anticipating a hospital procedure are welcome to celebrate the Anointing of the Sick after the
last daily Mass on any weekday. Please contact the Rectory to
indicate your intention to receive the sacrament.

Couples contemplating marriage must contact one of the priests at
least six months in advance to make an appointment to discuss

Do You Know Your Tribunal?
On this final Lenten Sunday before Palm Sunday, Christ
looks at us as he looks at the woman caught in adultery.
Her sin, our sin is patent and undeniable. The question is:
How do we look back at Christ? With the self-righteous yet
guilty eyes of the scribes and the Pharisees who drop their
stones but not their murderous intentions (which they now
transfer to Jesus)? Or like the adulteress who remains alone
before Jesus and who accepts with humble confidence the
sentence of Christ: “I do not condemn you?” The woman
gains “the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus” as her
Lord. Thanks to that event, we accept the loss of all things,
considering them as so much rubbish… especially our willfulness, our self-sufficiency, our meanness, our malice, our
self-assertion, and our pride. She and we “remember not the
events of the past” but instead enter upon the path the Event
who is Christ opens in “the mighty waters”: the accumulation of all the tears shed throughout history. The Father
opens a way, not in the sea, but in his Son’s side.
The Tribunal is a group of specially qualified Catholics
whose responsibility is to come to the help of people who
have experienced divorce and who may wish to remarry in
the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic
Church always seeks to balance two realities. One is the
unbreakableness of the bond of marriage. This is God’s law.
It cannot be broken by human intervention. On the other
hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of
the people involved. Was this a true marriage? Even though
a Catholic marriage was concelebrated, was there perhaps
some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved? The
annulment procedure addresses this problem. If you are divorced and want to marry in the Church or remarried outside the Catholic Church, please telephone the Tribunal Office.

The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the way
people join the Catholic Christian Community. It is the process of instruction, prayer, and community
experience that leads to full membership in
the Catholic Church. The program is for those
never baptized, those married to or marrying
Catholics and wanting to better understand
their partner’s faith, those persons having
never received the Sacrament of Confirmation and Eucharist, or needing some more instruction to help them to an

Seeking God in All Things
Take a look at our Lenten road to Calvary
in the Main Church and reflect on this
meditation from an excerpt of writings
by Thomas Merton.
It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I
now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me
and gave himself for me. (Gal 2:20)
Christ living in me is at the same time himself and myself.
From that moment I am united to him “in one spirit” there is
no longer any contradiction implied by the fact that we are
different people. This union is not merely a moral union.
Christ mystically identifies his members with himself by
giving them his Holy Spirit and so he manifests his presence
within us and becomes for us a source of new life.

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. (John 9:5)
Just as Jesus healed the man born blind, the Lord heals our
blindness so that we may be light for others. We put our
light on a lampstand so it gives light to all in the house.
St. Alphonsus Diaconate Candidate
Congratulations to JT Toth, a candidate in formation for
Holy Orders as a permanent deacon from our parish. JT will
be instituted into the Ministry of Acolyte on Saturday,
March 16th. Our support and prayers are with JT and his
family.
The mission of Catholic Charities agencies is to provide
service to people in need, to advocate for justice in social
structures, and to call the entire church and other people
of good will to do the same.
The Parish goal is $76,250.

A Word from Monsignor Owens
Dear friends,
As a church community, we are witnesses to an
historic event, the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI as
Bishop of Rome, and as such the supreme pastor of the Roman Catholic Church. Even though the last resignation of a
Pope occurred 600 years ago, there were many such occurrences in the centuries prior to that date.
“Tu es petrus”. Unlike any other Christian See,
Rome can put at least a name to every
Bishop in an unbroken line back to the
first century of the Christian era and to St.
Peter himself as the first Pope. In the first
centuries of the church’s existence many
of the Popes suffered martyrdom, along
with members of the flock. Then comes
the change: in 313 the church conducts a
Council in public view at the request of
the Emperor. Churches are built.
It is at this point that the Bishop of Rome begins to
assert his authority over other bishops granted to him by
Jesus to Peter and to his successors: “I will give you the
keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you forbid on
earth shall be forbidden in heaven and what you allow on
earth shall be allowed in heaven.” As a little guy I thought it
was pretty cool that the Pope would ride out, unarmed, to
meet Attila the Hun and ask that the city of Rome be spared
a sack – and so it was. The history of the Popes has its highs
(Leo the Great and Gregory the Great – one century apart)
and its lows (who can forget the Borgias). Despite it all the
office of Peter remains a distinct mark of Catholicism. John
and Peter hurried to the tomb John arriving first. He looks
inside it does not enter. He waits for Peter, close behind
him.
The magisterium (the teaching office of the church)
gives the church a compass, a discipline, a focus that produces clear teaching. Who does not know that the Catholic
Church opposes abortion? The Holy Father has spent his
whole life as a teacher shedding light on the mystery of
God’s love for us. As I write, the church with some level of
apprehension begins its transition. Prayer, in moments like
these, is anything but quaint.
Carpenters are quietly at work constructing the
conclave, small rooms, eating areas and the Sistine Chapel
for prayer. I imagine there are discreet conversations and
then the voting. Ballots soaked in water give off a black
smoke – no decision. White smoke off dry ballots – the
choice has been made. Shortly, we discover who will lead
us.
I have no inside information that would give me
any edge over you regarding who will be selected. I hope
for a Pope deeply devoted to prayer, humble, able to recognize the signs of the time and a heart that bleeds for those
entrusted to his care.
