VISION STATEMENT Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School is committed to the pursuit of Christian Truth & Excellence. All members of the school community are encouraged to develop their potential and special qualities in an environment centred on Christ. No 5 Wednesday 4th March, 2009 Dear Parents, Prayer for Lent Jesus, you spent forty days in the hot, dusty desert to get ready to do your Father’s work. Help us to get ready for Easter during the forty days of Lent. Help us to forgive others, to say ‘sorry’ and to make peace with everybody. Help us to say ‘yes’ to others so that we can follow you more closely. In this time of Lent give us generous hearts to become better people, More helpful people, More loving people. Amen ASSEMBLY: Assembly this Friday 6th March will be a Merit Award Assembly. THANK YOU: A very big thank you to Doug Dellit (Dina’s husband) for the very generous donation of furniture, including desks, chairs, a white board and filing cabinets. A very big thank you to the P & F from the Year 2 children. They really love their new desks – what a great way to start the year. SNACKS: With the welfare of the children in mind, may I urge parents to look at what children are given as snacks; especially at recess time. Many children have packets of chips, packets of heavily salted savoury biscuits, heavily processed snacks etc. Good health habits start early – so do bad ones! Remember – Monday is “Healthy Eating Recess” at Holy Spirit School – we ask that you support us by sending fruit, cheese, crackers, yoghurt, sandwiches etc. for morning recess – not cakes, packets of chips etc. PADDY BUCKLEY PRINCIPAL YEAR 2 PRAYER SERVICE: Parents and grandparents are welcome to join the Year 2 Class next Wednesday 11th March at 9.00am in the Holy Spirit Church. Thank you to the many parents who are supporting our Healthy Eating Policy. PLAYING ON SCHOOL EQUIPMENT: We are concerned with the number of children who are playing on school equipment before and after school, often unsupervised. For safety reasons, school equipment is out of bounds except during school hours. R.A.I.S.e – RAISING ACHIEVEMENT IN SCHOOLS: A reminder that Monday 16th March and Tuesday 17th March will be Pupil Free days while all staff attend the R.A.I.S.e Conference. I know that the information/training that the staff will gather from these days will assist us greatly as we develop the R.A.I.S.e initiative in our school. You will have all learnt a little more about the initiative from your child’s teacher at the Parent / Teacher night. We will endeavour to keep you abreast of our progress in our newsletter. KINDY 2010: Letter of offer for siblings wishing to start Kindy in 2010 will be sent out over the next couple of weeks. Could all parents please check that you have completed an application form. A further reminder is also given, that a Parish Priest Reference MUST accompany all applications including applications from existing families. Copies of the Parish Priest Reference form are available from the office or can be down loaded from the school’s website. Interviews for new families will take place in March. If you have friends or relatives who may be interested, please remind them that application forms need to be submitted by Friday 19th March. INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING TRAINING: Please be advised that the entry fee for swimmers at Bold Park is $3.20 per session. It would be helpful if the children have correct change to hand over to the pool staff. We would like to have a celebratory breakfast in the last week of term to congratulate the children on their hard work. If any parents are willing to assist, either by co-ordinating or helping on the day please advise Mr Somers. Mr Somers – Assistant Principal MERITS & HAPPENINGS: HAPPENINGS Kindy Last week we were very busy reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. We also had a great time visiting the library and still found time to make some delicious pancakes. This week we are learning all about shapes by using fruit and vegetables to make shape stamps. Pre-Primary We are learning about our Families and how each child fits into their special group. We are also measuring children to see how tall they are. There is a Height Chart displayed in the classroom. In Religion the children are learning about families. God has created families to love and care for family members. Jesus belonged to a family and wants each person to be part of a loving family. Year 1 We had a fantastic time on Friday presenting all our wonderful work at our class assembly. Many thanks to all the parents who came to support us at the first assembly. We all felt very ‘Special’! We have continued working hard with our reading and writing. Lots of children really enjoy telling us all about what they did on the weekend. Many thanks to the parents who have put their name on the roster for our Literacy groups and reading book exchange. All your help is appreciated. Year 2 We have been doing some excellent work in Year Two. In Literacy we have been learning how to write narratives. We have written some very exciting stories and are beginning to learn how to edit our own work. In Maths we have been looking at maps and found our school in the street directory. In Religion we are learning about special celebrations called sacraments. Year 3 Thank you to all the parents who attended our Class Prayer Service. This term we are studying ‘Australia.’ We are currently learning about Australian animals. In Australia there are many different types of animals. Many of these animals can only be found in Australia. We have learnt about kangaroos, emus, koalas, the platypus and what a marsupial is. Did you know that Australia has more marsupials than any other country in the world? We are excited to start our research this week on the characteristics of our favourite Australian animal. Year 4 We had a fantastic excursion to the Fremantle Ship Wreck Museum last week and learned some amazing things about the explorers that travelled to Western Australia. Did you know that the Batavia was on her first voyage carrying spices when she ran aground off the coast of WA? The skeleton on display was gruesome but really interesting! Thank you to the parents who drove us and helped out on the day. In religion we are talking about how Jesus showed forgiveness – a true sign of love. Year 5 We have been busy learning about animal migration and have prepared a report on why animals migrate. We also have been working on our Explorers Assignment, which is due next week. Year 6 For the last 2 weeks the Year 6 class have worked so hard writing expositions.
