READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY
Adoration Corner
First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles
begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11).
Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of
the earth (Psalm 104).
Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one
body and given to drink of one Spirit
(1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13).
Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends
them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain
sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23).
Held Wednesday from 9:30 AM-7:00 PM.
Meditation
By he outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost,
Christ’s paschal mystery was brought to its completion. The
Holy Spirit prepares us with his grace in order to draw us
to Christ. He manifests the risen Lord to us, opening our
minds. He makes present the mystery of Christ. And he reconciles us, bringing us into communion with God. Saint
Thomas Aquinas says that the Holy Spirit interiorly perfects
our spirit, communicating to it a new dynamism so that it
refrains from evil for love. With the Holy Spirit within us “it
is quite natural for people who had been absorbed by the
things of this world to become entirely other-worldly in outlook, and for cowards to become people of great courage” (Saint Cyril of Alexandria).

cared for me, in prison and you visited me…whatever you did
for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Mt
25:35-36, 40)

The Kyrie Eleison
“God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified” (Acts 2:36). The Kyrie
Eleison (Lord have mercy) is a litany addressed to the risen and ascended Jesus. Acclaiming him as both Lord
and Christ, we implore his mercy. Though often prayed in English, the Kyrie Eleison may also be sung or recited in the original Greek, the only bit of Greek to have survived in our Mass of the Roman Rite. The Kyrie
Eleison is a cherished reminder of the prayer of the Eastern Churches who in their liturgies ceaselessly call
down the mercy of Christ.
The Kyrie Eleison may be sung by the people responding to a cantor, or by the people responding to a
choir. Over the centuries it has been clothed in every variety of musical vesture. Some of these melodies
emerge from the depths of a great sorrow; others express a quiet repentance and hope; still others soar ecstatically in praise of Christ’s triumph over sin and death. “Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy. Lord, have
mercy.” A prayer for all times and places. Even the simplest chant can serve to fix it in the heart.

CALL TO CONVERSION AND HOLINESS
In attaining union with Jesus, He gives us two
great gifts: forgiveness of our sins and Himself in the Holy Eucharist. The priest is in
need of these gifts himself, but he is also
called to provide them for the entire Church.
This is why the Servant of God, Pope John
Paul II, was able to say: “There can be no Eucharist without
the priesthood, just as there can be no priesthood without
the Eucharist.
You are invited to read Cardinal Rigali’s Pastoral Letter that
can be found on the home page of the Archdiocese—
www.archphila.org.

Apostle Church/National Shrine of St. John Neumann, 1019
N. Fifth Street, Philadelphia. Archbishop Edward Gilbert,
C.Ss.R. will be the main celebrant. Reception immediately

$35 and may be purchased online at redemptorists.net or by
calling (877) 876-7662.
DEVOTED TO PRAYER
Today, as we await Pentecost, we come to the
end of the baptismal homily from Peter that we have
heard over the past few weeks. This homily was written by a realist who knew the joy and the glory of a
resurrection faith, but also knew that the strength of
that faith would be put to the test and tried in suffering. Earlier this year we heard Jesus preach, “Blessed
are you when they insult you . . . because of
me” (Matthew 5:11) and this is echoed today by Peter.
These words are also formed in the image of Christ
who prays to the Father in heaven today, a prayer that
is placed in John’s Gospel right before Jesus endures
his suffering and death. Our awaiting the Spirit, awaiting our mission for Christ means that we are, most
likely, awaiting some sort of trial and suffering. We
don’t endure the same degree of persecution that Peter
and John knew, but each of us has our faith put to the
test eventually. And it is for this reason that we, like
Jesus and like those faithful followers gathered in the
upper room, devote ourselves to prayer.

VOCATION
Roman Catholics in the United States spend a
good deal of time speaking of “vocation” and the
manner in which each of us discerns our vocation for
life. In today’s apostolic letter, however, Peter gives
us the “cornerstone” of our vocation, the description
of what each of us is called to first and foremost by
our baptism. He describes our vocation as “a chosen
race, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, a people of [God’s]
own, so that you may announce
the praises” of Christ, who
called us out of darkness into
light (1 Peter 2:9). All of us, no
matter what path our life’s vocation may take us down, have
been chosen by God, made
holy, and anointed as priests in
the high priesthood of Christ
through baptism. All of this, so
that we may announce the
praises of Christ. Vocation is
given for proclamation at home,
in the workplace—wherever life takes us—in service,
in word, and in sacrament.
