“Fools for Christ.” What a beautiful
expression.! Who, but a fool would choose to
cling to faith in a God that became one of us
and like us in all things except sin. Who but a fool would
believe that such love would become available to all: young,
old, infirm, healthy. Who but a fool would believe that true
conversion, true change is really possible. If this is what you
believe, than congratulations, you are a “fool for Christ.”
Today’s second reading from Paul to the Corinthians
underlines some comforting facts about our faith: “consider
your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were
wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many
were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world
to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of
the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing
those who are something.”
After his own conversion experience in the catacombs of
Rome, St. Phillip Neri became known as Rome’s second
apostle. With a large group of followers in tow St. Phillip
began joyful processions through the streets to various
churches. He deliberately was looking to infuse Christian
principles into what had become a carnival atmosphere. The
morals were questionable. True joy can only be found in Godbut it does not have to be a sterile, ascetic joy. Remember,
David danced before the Ark of the Covenant, and he was
known to be a “man after God’s own heart.” St. Phillip was
known to be the perennial prankster-often wearing a goofy
looking hat or a kazoo in his mouth. The Catholic approach to
the world is marked by moderation-this comes from the
tradition of St. Thomas Aquinas where Catholic Christians
assess the proper use of goods in their life. Food, drink,
entertainment, physical exercise, modern technology all have
their source in God and can become a means to grow closer to
God if we utilize them properly.
A cynical, scientific mindset has settled upon the church in
some quarters. As people of faith we need to resist these
trends. The faith is reasonable but reason alone can never lead
us to faith in Christ. God works in the sacraments of His
Church. Unless you have experienced this first hand it is hard
to explain-which, perhaps, is why our faith appears “foolish”
to those outside. Forgiveness of sins through a priest who is
himself a sinner? Foolish, yet the testimony of countless
transformed lives bears witness to the age-old truth. The real,
true, substantial presence of Jesus Christ in a piece of bread?
Foolish, yet countless scientifically verifiable appearances of
Eucharistic miracles around the world should tell us that
something special is taking place, not to mention transformed
lives and people who receive instantaneous healings through
reception of Holy Communion. The Sacrament of the sick?
Foolish, yet many people have recovered from serious
illnesses through this special sacrament of the church.
Sacrament of Holy Orders? Foolish, who could believe that a
validly ordained priest could make Jesus Christ present among
the people, and yet to this very day, as Jesus promised, “the
gates of hell” have not prevailed upon the church of Peter.
Yes, it may be foolish to believe in the promises of an
imperfect church living in an imperfect world, yet I am proud
to be a “fool for Christ.” As Peter said to Our Lord, “Lord to
whom should we go, you have the words of everlasting life?”

A Helping Hand
The Belltown Council of the Knights of Columbus and St.
Patrick Guild realize the importance and benefits of a quality
Catholic high school education. We are fully aware of the
sacrifices made by many to provide the choice of a Catholic
high school education for our children. With this is mind, the
Knights of Columbus and the Guild of St. Patrick are awarding
a total of four (4) $500.00 gifts to active St. Patrick Church
parishioners currently enrolled at East Catholic High School,
Mercy High School and Xavier High School. We ask that you
please pick up an application in the Parish office. Please take

Immaculee Ilibagiza
On Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 7pm, St. Matthew Church in
Tolland, CT is proud to be hosting a presentation by the
international speaker, Immaculee Ilibagiza. The presentation
will be held at St. Matthew Church, 111 Tolland Green,
Tolland, CT. Immaculee, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide
and New York Times best selling author, will share her
inspirational story of faith, hope, sorrow, strength, awesome
faith and forgiveness. We would like to invite you to join us
for this fantastic event. We expect to draw a great crowd from
around the state of CT. Advanced Tickets: $10 students;

ROCK-A-THON SERVICE PROJECT, 2/26 & 27: Saint
Patrick’s Life Teen will be participating in a service project
with St. Andrew Life Teen called the Rock-a-thon to raise
money for the desperate people of Jeremie, Haiti. All of the
money raised will go directly to the Haitian Health
Foundation, which was founded by Dr. Lowney of
Connecticut. The Haitian Health Foundation built and runs a
health clinic in Jeremie Haiti. The full time salary for a nurse
at this clinic is approximately $3,500. Last year the rock-athon raised over $30,000 and supported the full time salary of
eight nurses at this clinic.
This years’ Rock-a-thon is from 10am Saturday, February
26th to 10am Sunday, February 27th. We will raise money
through pledges and donations. Please let us know if you
would like to contribute. We will have a brief meeting for
parents, teens and any interested parishioners on Sunday,
January 30th at 6:00 following the life teen Mass in the parish
center. This meeting will feature a witness talk from a teen
from Saint Andrew that has been to Haiti recently with Dr
Lowney to see the great need.
STEUBENVILLE EAST 2011: Steubenville East will take
place July 22-24, 2011 at the University of Rhode Island and
registration is now open. Parents’ meeting regarding
Steubenville, January 30th in the parish center directly
following life teen Mass. Please make an effort to be there to
hear about this great weekend retreat for your teen, PARENTS
OF 8TH GRADERS, WELCOME AND INVITED!!
SUMMER CAMP 2011: Camp Veritas, Wurtsboro, NY;
about 2 ½ hours from East Hampton. Check out their website
at www.campveritas.com.The dates are August 14-20th. A
deposit is due by the end of January/early February to reserve
your spot. First come, first served. Although the camp will
hold 100’s of teens, I expect our bus to fill up quickly. Please
let us know if you have any questions or need forms. This is a
great opportunity to hang with friends, make new ones and
grow in your faith. Don’t miss all that this camp has to offer:
heated pools, lake with boating activities, go-carting, hockey,
tennis, campfires on the beach, climbing wall, hiking trails.

Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
Brothers and sisters, our celebration today focuses on the
Beatitudes, the words of Jesus that challenge and comfort us.
We are called to be meek, merciful, poor in spirit,
peacemakers. But we will also be persecuted for the sake of
the gospel. Yet in all these ways, we will be blessed as well.
As we begin Mass, let us pray for the grace to live as these

people will be receiving the sacrament of First
Holy Communion. I am asking each member of
our parish family to spiritually support these
children by becoming a prayer partner. If you wish to
participate please take a child’s name from the basket in front
of the altar and offer prayers for the child until their First Holy
Communion date which is indicated on the card. If you wish,
you may send a card or note to the child on their First
Communion by leaving it in the basket. Thank you for your

“PRAISE GOD WITH MUSIC”
Organ Replacement Update
$108,885.00 has been collected to date representing 75.75%
of all pledges. Thank you for your timely payments.
As part of our project to replace the organ, there are additional
improvements and upkeep that needs to be done in the choir
loft. One of those items is to replace the existing carpeting in
the choir loft with a hard surface to improve the sound quality
for both the new organ and for the choir.
We learned that there is old floor tile beneath the carpeting
that we were required to test for asbestos. The test results
proved that there is a very small trace of asbestos (i.e. about
5%) in the tile. There was no trace of asbestos in the glue
material. As a result, we must have this tile and carpet flooring
professionally removed and disposed of by an asbestos
abatement company who must follow specific guidelines set
by
the
State
Health
Department.
This work will begin in the church on Monday, January 31,
2011. On Tuesday, February 1, 2011 a scientist will certify
that all materials and debris containing asbestos has been
properly removed and disposed of and the job will be
completed. We have been assured by the abatement company
that the situation does not pose a health risk and all precautions
and state requirements will be strictly adhered to during the
removal process. This is to inform you should you notice these
workers around our church.

Annual Bishop’s Appeal to change the
name to Annual Catholic Appeal
The Annual Bishop’s Appeal (ABA) was initiated in 1978 to
provide for the ever-increasing educational, human, pastoral,
and spiritual needs of the people of New London, Windham,
Middlesex, and Tolland counties and Fishers Island. The
Appeal enables our Church to implement and administer these
and other critical services in a comprehensive framework in
order to carry out the work of Jesus Christ. It would not be
possible to carry out His work without your assistance.
Through the Annual Bishop’s Appeal, the Catholic Church of
Eastern Connecticut assists elderly persons in need, families in
crises, people who are homeless, lonely, vulnerable, youth,
young adults, and our parishes and Catholic schools. The
Appeal also enables the Church to promote social justice,
respect for human life and to communicate with all who seek
to hear the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Through their assigned campaign goal, every Parish and
Mission is required to support our Diocesan operations,
services and ministries that in turn meet the physical,
educational and spiritual needs of thousands throughout our
four county faith community that one Parish could not meet
alone. This allows each one of us, as one, united in faith, to
fulfill God’s call to spread the good news and to love and serve
one another.
As we prepare to conduct the 2011 Annual Appeal, we are
pleased to announce a number of changes and improvements
for this year’s campaign. In an effort to better describe the
comprehensive nature of the Appeal, we have decided to
rename the campaign: The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA).
The time frame of the ‘active phase’ of the campaign will be
changed to coincide with the Lenten Season. The Deanery
Socials will be modified from seven Parish-based functions to
three Diocesan-wide Socials. The traditional Pre-Appeal and
In-Pew Commitment weekends will be ‘shifted- away’ from
the first two weekends in May to avoid conflicts with First
Eucharist Liturgies at the Parishes. For the 2011 Annual
Catholic Appeal, Pre-Appeal Weekend will be March 26/27,
2011 and the In Pew Commitment Weekend will be April 2/3,
2011.
This year's Appeal theme is "Do This in Memory of Me,"
which is part of the Eucharistic Prayer of Mass.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
At this time of year annually throughout
the nation, we celebrate Catholic education. We celebrate what
the Catholic Church has accomplished during the last 150
years; we celebrate what the Church is accomplishing today;
and we celebrate the hope that the future of Catholic education
will be as effective and successful in fulfilling its mission on
behalf of the Church and this democratic society.
We are all acutely aware that the last two decades of the
20th Century and the first decade of the 21st Century have
changed many aspects of our lives. While the United States
has grown in wealth and power, it has also experienced
unprecedented economic turmoil. Lives have been affected;
families have had to adjust to the new structures of economic
reality; and institutions we have come to believe were
immutable have ceased to exist or, have, at least, significantly
changed. Catholic schools have certainly been affected. Some
have closed and some have changed. But Catholic education
is and will continue to be a positive force for children, families
and the Church even as it adjusts to a changing world.
In this age of secularism and relativism, our Catholic
schools teach children the skills that they need to function in
the world. They teach children the discipline they need to be
productive members of a nuclear family. They teach children
to make good decisions about their personal and social lives.
They teach children about Jesus, the God man, who took on a
human body to suffer and die for sin. They teach children how
to grow in holiness so that they can demonstrate their love for
God and neighbor. They teach children to live the Gospel
every day of their lives.
We are cognizant of the financial difficulties which this
current economy presents to the parents of children who desire
to be educated in the faith. We are also cognizant of the
contributions which our schools are making to our society in
general. Our schools help to produce good citizens who
contribute to the social good without any substantial support
from government sources. It is important that our schools
continue to serve; it is important that our schools continue to
excel; it is important that all Catholics support the work of our
Catholic schools and in particular the families whose economic
conditions make it difficult for them to pay the tuitions at
Catholic schools.
We are indeed fortunate that so many good people have
served our children as teachers and aides and support staff over
the years. They are truly people of faith with a commitment to
learning and to the Gospel. May the Lord bless them always as
they inculcate the truths of the Gospel in the children of light.
