2014 • SweetWater Letterpress Pricing Guide SweetWater Letterpress is a Los Angeles based artisan printing press specializing in hand crafted invitations, announcements, social stationery, business and greeting cards. We blend our modern design with the meticulous craftsmanship of letterpress printing to create bold, one-of-a-kind pieces. We believe in quality craftsmanship, great customer service and the power of strong design. Custom Design At SweetWater Letterpress you won’t find templates or collections to choose from. We believe that every person, event and communication is unique and should be treated that way. It’s one of the ways we set ourselves apart from the number of templated shops you find online. In our initial conversation we’ll ask questions, listen carefully and sketch a look and feel that is uniquely yours. If you have your own design ready to go, we’ll simply work with you to make sure it translates to letterpress successfully. As a completely custom studio we can bring just about any idea to life. Pricing & Payments Once we’ve had our initial consultation, you’ll know exactly how much it’s all going to cost. There are no hidden fees and no extra charges, even envelopes are included in our pricing. In order to begin working on your design we require a non-refundable 50% deposit with the balance due before we go to print. Wording, Dates and Addresses On our website we offer a downloadable guide to the information we need to start your design. Names, wording, return dates, addresses, titles, ink colors, typefaces and paper stock should all be supplied before we can begin design. Proofs, Revisions & Approvals As soon as we receive your order, deposit and signed contract, we’ll begin your design and send you a PDF proof via email for you to review. The initial design phase takes about 3-7 days depending on the complexity of the design. Of course you’ll know when to expect it from our initial discussions. Included in your pricing is a comfortable 4 rounds of revisions and with each round we will send you a new PDF to review. Each additional proof after is $25 so we ask that you please proofread carefully and note any changes clearly. Once you approve the final artwork we begin plate making. Any requests for revisions at that point will incur additional charges and result in a delayed turn around. Hand Printing While we watch each sheet very carefully and keep any movement as minimal as possible, the nature of letterpress printing can result in very subtle movement to the registration and variation in ink coverage. The uniqueness of each piece is what we beleive makes letterpress printing so beautiful. Turnaround Since we are often creating a unique design, printing by hand and even finishing one sheet at a time, project duration can vary widely from order to order. Our current production schedule also plays a role in the turn around of each project. While stationery usually prints within 12 days, business cards and greeting cards can take up to 24 days depending on quantity and embellishments. Our custom invitation sets will vary the greatest and can take between 21 and 30 days to complete. It is always suggested that you discuss your deadlines before we get started. We do offer rush pricing on many orders and will let you know if that is an available option. Shipping We ship all of our orders via UPS or FedEx ground with insurance and tracking. If you need a rush delivery we are happy to offer rates for air shipment. All additional shipping costs are due before delivery and international rates may apply. Our premium stocks are 220# Lettra and 236# Savoy, that’s really thick. We also carry a selection of recycled and wood fiber papers ranging from 100# to 140# weights and can order most custom papers on request. We print one sided, two sided, paint the edges and just about any other unique trick you can dream up. We work with your artwork, your designers artwork or we can create custom artwork for you. When letterpress printing on two sides of a business card each side of the card is printed onto standard cardstock then glued together and trimmed to size resulting in a double thick card. This is done so the impression on each side is consistent and is referred to as a duplexed card. Below is a list of common questions we are asked. If you can’t find the question you have or are looking for more detailed information please give us a call or send us an email and we will be happy to answer any further inquiries you may have. What paper do you use? We carry a full line of Crane & Co. Lettra and Reich Savoy 100% cotton stock as well as a selection of recycled and fiber papers. We also order specialty papers on demand. Are envelopes included? Yes. In fact we provide you with 5% more envelopes than your order requires just in case you make a mistake. We sell additional blank envelopes at .40¢ each What type of inks do you use? We prefer rubber based letterpress inks and custom mix each color. However, metallic, neon and glow in the dark inks are petroleum based and are purchased pre-mixed. Can I order a specific PMS color? Yes. If we have the desired PMS in stock, there is no additional charge. If we do not, the cost is $65. Do you print glossy inks? No. We print on uncoated papers and thus all inks will have a matte finish. What kind of presses do you have? We currently have 4 working presses in our shop. A 1951 Vandercook no1, 1951 Vandercook no4, 1962 Chandler & Price and a 1966 Kelsey. What is your maximum sheet size? Our maximum sheet size is 15” x 20”. Can I print large solid colors? Technically yes, but it won’t turn out the way you expect. In fact, if you are interested in printing large solid colors we will ask you to read a disclaimer and sign off on it too. Can I print white ink on dark paper? Technically yes, but white ink and light colored inks are not very opaque. The ink will print on the paper with a large amount of transparency and will not turn out as expected. If you require light ink on dark paper we recommend printing with foil. Do you use metallic inks? Yes. We love metallic colors. Metallic ink can offer a nice sheen, but it is a dull appearance rather than shiny. Do you use neon inks? Yes. We love neon colors even more. Can I print with no ink, just an impression? Yes. It’s called a blind impression and offers a subtle texture to the piece. We recommend using a tonal ink, that is printing the same color ink as the paper to aid the readability in poor lighting conditions. What is the maximum order? There is no limit to quantities. We print small runs and large runs regularly. Can you print just one piece? Yes. Individual prints start at $85 depending on artwork. What is the smallest font you can print? 6pt. Nobody can read anything smaller anyway. Do you print books? Sure. But it requires a very customized quote. What is duplexing? Put simply, it is the process of adhering two sheets of paper together to create a double or triple thick card. Why do you duplex? We duplex in order to print two sides of a card without having impression show through or alter the artwork on the opposite side. We also duplex to add solid color on the opposite side or to add thickness to a specific stock that doesn’t offer a thicker sheet. What type of file do I need to submit? Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Indesign files. When are you open?
