Step by Step Letterpress
1.
Learn
How Letterpress Works: Letterpress is a fascinating printing process where digital artwork is turned
into a plastic plate. The plastic plate is then printed on any variety of papers. Impression can be very
light or quite heavy creating a beautiful, textural print that you will treasure. Ink colors, artwork style,
and paper choice is only limited by your imagination.
2.
Design
1. Design your artwork - Panthera Press can do this for you with
the final output of letterpress in mind. Type smaller than 8pt can be
difficult to print and lines smaller than .5pt.
2. Export your files - Artwork of plate making must be only black
and white. You can output a 300 DPI bitmap image from Photoshop
of each color, or send vector images with type set to outlines in .EPS
format (Confused? Just ask us; a step by step guide is available.)
3.
Order
3. Receive an Invoice - Once all the artwork is approved by both
parties, you will get a proper invoice and contract to sign. After
paying a 50% deposit the work begins.
4. Ordering - I will order the plate and paper of your choice, allow
about 3-4 business days for these to arrive.
5. Colors/Details - Please provide samples of anything you want us
to color match or choose a Pantone color from the Uncoated Solid
Book. I can mix to the digital image, but colors look different on each
monitor so a sample or Pantone number is important.
4.
Print
6. Printing begins - I will trim the paper down and begin printing.
This can take a day or a couple of weeks depending on how many
pieces you ordered, and the number of colors. I can give you a pretty
accurate time-line along with you Invoice.
7. Project Complete - Once printing is finished you will be sent a
digital proof and final Invoice. Pay the final part of your Invoice and
within 24 hours your project will be lovingly packed and shipped.
8. Enjoy! Revel in the beautiful of your hand crafted project!
5.
Limits
Limitations: Letterpress does have its limitations. Feel free to send in questions or artwork for an
assessment and I can give you a good idea what is possible or alternative methods we can use.

We don’t usually print screens or halftones - they tend to get smeared and blurry (70-90 LPI is OK)
We cannot print super shiny metallics - if you want ultra glossy metallics you need foil stamping
Our size limitation is about 5 1/4” x7 1/4” because of the size of our press
We don’t print light on dark - the ink is transparent so while it can be done, it will look faint
We do not currently offer four color (CMYK) process work
We cannot offer samples of the final product before you pay - plates and paper are expensive and will
not be ordered until a deposit is made. I can offer general print samples and paper samples on request.

Choosing the Perfect Paper
1.
Learn
Picking a Paper: Letterpress presses can print on much thicker, elegant papers than digital printers can.
Although we can print on almost any paper, cotton papers and print making papers tend to look best.
Here are our favorite papers, but if you want something special we can probably find a paper that fits
your vision. These digital images are close, but not always a perfect representation of the paper color.
Crane Lettra: Cotton paper is an environmentally friendly
option. This beautifully soft, luscious paper comes in two
weights 110lb/300gsm and 220lb/600gsm. Both are thick,
and elegant making them perfect for wedding invitations or
business cards that impress.

match the Crane Lettra paper. We can order envelopes in
a variety of colors or match ink colors to envelopes you’ve
already purchased. Envelopes come in a variety of standard
sizes, but cannot be cut down, so check your envelope size
before you choose your project size.
Savoy: Another wonderful 100% cotton paper. This paper
comes in white and natural. It is available in two weights 118 lb/20pt cover and 236 lb/ 40pt cover. There are matching
envelopes for this paper as well.

is great if you plan to mount it to another card or use it for
letterhead. The 110lb weight comes in white, but the lighter
88lb weight comes in a natural and beautiful soft blue as well.
Cranes Colors: This cotton paper is the ultimate in colorful
luxury. It comes in 12 brilliant colors and in hefty 134lb
weight. A great way to add punch to a design.
