Dear Friends,
The attorneys of the diocese
have now put in place an internet website. This website provides information
in connection with developments in the
ongoing litigation in connection with the sexual abuse
scandal. The address is: www.la-clergycases.com. I suggest you keep this address and check it out especially
when the media is dealing with the issue. And remember
to pray for all those who have been victims of sexual
abuse and others who have been affected by sexual
abuse.
Here’s some good news. One of the young people of our parish, Kristee Marihart, who recently came
through our Confirmation Program, has been accepted to
serve as a volunteer with NET Ministries. NET—National
Evangelization Team, is a Catholic organization that
leads retreats for young Catholics all over the world.
Kristee, daughter of Mike & Ginny, will spend nine months
leading retreats across the country and sharing her faith
with Catholic teens. Each team member is asked to raise
at least $3,000 to help fund the year of mission. Would
you like to support Kristee? You may send a tax deductible donation to NET Ministries, 110 Crusade Ave., West
St. Paul. MN 55118-4427. Make your check payable to
NET Ministries and indicate on the check that the donation is for Kristee Marihart. She will introduce herself
briefly at all of the Masses this weekend. Good luck and
God bless you Kristee.

“Safeguard the Children Parish Committee”
The purpose of the Virtus Program is to train adults on
how to protect all children. The training makes you aware
of the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods and
means by which offenders commit abuse, and easy steps
one can take to prevent child sexual abuse. The Archdiocese has mandated this training for all staff and parishioners who work directly with children. However, it is highly
recommended for all who are interested in preventing
child abuse.
We presently have sessions scheduled for
Tuesday, August 30; and Thursday, September 1.
Please call Eileen Fewless at (818)340-1440
to sign-up for a session.

“KINGDOM OF THE SON”
St. Bernardine Children Give the Gift of Life
We are so proud of the children who attended Vacation
Bible School; in one week they raised over a thousand
dollars to aid the children of Africa. Someone was so impressed with their generosity that they wrote a matchingfund check! We sent 3 heifers, four goats, and 2 water
buffalos—a total of nine milk-producing animals, for hardworking families hoping to provide a better life for their
children. Gallon after gallon of wonderful, life-sustaining
milk will end hunger and despair for one child, one family
and one village at a time.
Our thanks and appreciation to the over 50 volunteers whose hard work made Vacation Bible School a
success in prayer, fun, and giving to those in need.
Please join the St. B.'s Social Activities Committee for

YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE
Did you know that every day 29,000 children die
from hunger? That is about 20 per minute! Yet just
$30 can feed a hungry child for an entire month! August
5-6th, St. Bernardine Youth Ministry will be participating
in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine, a hunger fundraiser. It’s about saving kids lives. Join us! Act . . .
Fast . . . Do the Famine. Contact the youth ministry
office for more information or stop by for a flier and registration form. Let us know you’re interested ASAP
so we can get the fundraising materials out to you.
Participants will receive one hour of community service
for every $10 they raise in sponsorships up to $300.
This is a great way for Confirmation candidates to
get a head start on their parish and community service requirement.
Senior High Youth Ministry does not meet again until Thursday, August 4th and Junior High Youth Ministry does not meet again until Tuesday, August 9th.
CONFIRMATION PROGRAM NEWS
Registration for next year’s Confirmation program is
underway. If you do not have a registration packet yet,
stop by the youth ministry office to pick one up. We are
looking for more Confirmed Adults to serve as Catechists, and Confirmed Teens to serve as Peer Ministers, for next year’s program. Please contact the
youth ministry office and find out how you can join
the Confirmation Team!

Sandwich Sunday Update
As always, the generosity of the St. Bernardine community enabled hundreds of homeless men and women to
go to sleep without hunger and thirst quenched. With
your generous cash donations, we were able to deliver
80 bagged meals containing still-warm hamburgers &
chicken sandwiches. Hundreds of freshly picked oranges were especially welcomed. In addition to food
and water, we also provided 5 brand new sleeping bags
to people who had nothing .. people who were laying on
the cold ground, alone, without even the barest necessities of life—no food, no water, nothing in reserve.
We were repeatedly requested to “Please keep doing
what you’re doing.” God’s blessing was wished on all.
The next Sandwich Sunday will be August 7th.
Your continued generosity is much appreciated.
