Stewardship of Treasure August 25, 2013 Week 9 of the Fiscal Year Ordinary Income: NEW Budgeted Goal Actual Collection: On-Line Giving: (W/E 8/23/13) Over/UNDER: $6,750.00 6,207.50 516.00 ($ 26.50) STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS “Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.” Luke 14:14 We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return - a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven. Thankfully they were able to escape safely. People have already responded very generously offering assistance, but the family will have needs further down the road. If you would like to make a donation, a fund has been established at Liberty Bank in town. Just stop into Liberty Bank and mention that you would like to make a donation to the Gioielli fund and they will know what to do. Jesus tells us in the gospels that if he have faith the size of a mustard seed we can move mountains. We may need that faith in days, weeks, and months ahead. Wars and terrorist activities are taking a big human toll. Egypt, Syria, the continent of Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan are all places where people are dying in great numbers because of violence. You and I can make a difference through prayer. Prayer cannot only move mountains, it can end wars. I remember the famous story of Mother Teresa in Beirut, Lebanon. There was intense fighting and word got out that there was an orphanage right in the middle of some of the worst fighting. Mother Teresa said “ I have asked Our Lady and she said that tomorrow there would be a cease fire.” The commentator in the documentary said “what was needed right now was not a saint.” Well, it turns out, what was needed at the moment was indeed a saint. As the sun rose the next morning, sure enough, the guns were silent. A cease fire had been declared. In the village of Medjugorje in Bosnia, a place where it is reported that the Blessed Virgin Mary has been appearing, not one person from the village was injured in the Bosnian/Croatian conflict. In fact, bombs landed near the church but never detonated! In the diary Divine Mercy in my soul by Saint Faustina Kowalska she relates the following story: “In the evening, when I was in my cell, I saw an angel, the executor of divine wrath. He was clothed in a dazzling robe, his face gloriously bright, a cloud beneath his feet. From the cloud, bolts of thunder and flashes of lightning were springing into his hands; and from his hand they were going forth, and only then were they striking the earth. When I saw this sign of divine wrath which was about to strike the earth, and in particular a certain place, which for good reasons I cannot name, I began to implore the angel to hold off for a few moments and the world would do penance. But my plea was a mere nothing in the face of the divine anger. Just then I saw the Most Holy Trinity. The greatness of its majesty pierced me deeply, and I did not dare to repeat my entreaties. At that very moment I felt in my soul the power of Jesus’ grace, which dwells in my soul. When I became conscious of this grace, I was instantly snatched up before the Throne of God. Oh, how great is our Lord and God and how incomprehensible His holiness! I will make no attempt to describe his greatness, because before long we shall see Him as He is. I found myself pleading with God for the world with words heard interiorly. As I was praying in this manner, I saw the Angel’s helplessness; he could not carry out the just punishment that was rightly due for sins. Never before had I prayed with such inner power as I did then. The words with which I entreated God are there: Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us.” Praying the divine mercy chaplet will bring peace to our homes and peace to our war-torn world. MATRIMONY A beautiful sacrament full of blessings, romance, love, commitment, comedy, giving, new life, joys, sorrows, adventure, challenges, responsibilities, growth, memories and more. “Aim high, but do not aim so high that you totally miss the target. What really matters is that he will love you, that he will respect you, that he will honor you, that he will be absolutely true to you, that he will give you the freedom of expression and let you fly in the development of your own talents. He is not going to be perfect, but if he is kind and thoughtful, if he knows how to work and earn a living, if he is honest and full of faith, the chances are you will not go wrong, that you will be immensely happy.” Gordon B. Hinckley ST. PATRICK CHOIR St. Patrick's Choir will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, September 11th at 7:00 pm in the Church choir loft. September 1, 2013 Introduction-Liturgy of the Word: As we gather on this Labor Day weekend, we are reminded at this Mass that God seeks out and upholds the lowly of this world. Our psalm refrain sings, “God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor,” and our Gospel says, “The one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Let us give praise and thanks to God today for all who labor, whatever their rank or position, and pray for all who need work. And let us pray for the grace of humility for ourselves. 22nd Sunday in Ordinary READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Thes 4:13-18, Lk 4:16-30 Ps 96:13b Tuesday: Wed: 1 Thes 5:1-6, 9-11, Lk 4:31-37, Ps 27:13 Col 1:1-8, Lk 4:38-44, Ps 52:10 Thursday: Col 1:9-14, Lk 5:1-11, Ps 98:2 Friday: Col 1:15-20, Lk 5:33-39, Ps 100:2b Saturday: Col 1:21-23, Lk 6:1-5, Ps 54:6 Sunday: Wis 9:13-18, Phlm 9-10, 12-17, Lk 14:25-23, Ps 90:3-6, 12-13 Apostolate of Prayer for Priests….Norwich Aug 31: Sept 1: William Cook 1986, Joseph Martucci 1984, Fr. George Mattathilanikal LOVE THEM BOTH The number of abortions in the United States has declined 25% since 1990. Still, 28% of those having abortions identify themselves as Catholic. A pro-life organization called Heroic Media created an ad raising awareness of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act that would outlaw abortions after 20 weeks. The ad featured a baby around 20 to 24 weeks being held in a person’s hand. The caption beside the image read: “This child has no voice, which is why it needs yours.” This group wanted to purchase ad space from certain newspapers, but three major newspapers turned them down, because the image of the small child was “too controversial.” It was the Chicago Tribune, LA Times and USA Today that refused to run their ad. (http:// politicalout.com) September 1, 2013 22nd Sunday in Ordinary SEPTEMBER HEALTH TIP TRANSPORTATION NEEDED BODY FAT & YOUR BMI Your body fat percentage is your total mass of divided by your total weight. Body fat includes essential body fat and storage body fat. The percentage of essential body fat for women is greater than that for men, due to the demands of childbearing and other hormonal functions. Your body fat percentage is a measure of fitness level, and can be calculated at http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/body-fatpercentage-calculator. A parishioner in town is no longer able to drive to Sunday 10:30 Mass and would like to continue. If you are willing and able to help, please call the office to make arrangements 860-267-6644. Thank you in advance. (BMI) also provides a measure that allows the comparison of the adiposity (fat) of individuals. It compares your height to your weight and gives you an indication of whether you are overweight, underweight or at a healthy weight for your height. We are in need of several people, who would be willing to drive to Big Y in Rocky Hill - several times a week - to pick up bakery items that they donate to SVDP. Generally 2-5 shopping carts full. Please email: [email protected] or call 860-344-0097 ext. 18 if you are available. The soup kitchen is always in need of ceramic coffee cups, stainless steel forks and spoons. If you are cleaning cabinets out, please consider donating them to the soup kitchen. Contact Lydia or simply drop them off between 7:00am and 2:00pm. Many thanks for your continued support of our neighbors in need. To calculate your BMI: - Take your height in inches and multiply that number by the same number - Divide your weight in pounds by this figure - Take this number and multiply it by 703 and this new number is your BMI. Example: Height 5'6" tall, so 66 inches. 66 x 66 = 4356 Weight = 160 lbs. Divide 160 by 4356 = 0.04 Multiply 0.04 x 703 = 28 This person has a BMI of 28 BMI Categories: Underweight = <18.5 Normal weight = 18.5-24.9 Overweight = 25-29.9 Obesity = 30 or greater ST. Defending Our Liberty #79 September 1, 2013 The Catholic Church’s stand against the federal health care mandate isn’t about access to contraception, which is widely available.
