There is great news on the
steeple project. If you have noticed
the stained glass windows are back in
place and they have been covered with a protective
sealant. The church has been power washed, painted, and
is beginning to look like new. The masonry has also been
repaired. The last step is the belfry. The diocese has
given us approval to continue with the final part of the
project. As noted in a previous pastor’s corner, my visit
to the top of the steeple confirmed what the contractor
had told us. There are portions of the roof that need
attention because of excessive warp, splitting, or dry rot.
They will replace those shingles. The current screens will
be replaced with wooden louvers and they will inspect
and remove all rotten wood trim. Last, but certainly not
least, the crosses will be replaced. In short, our beautiful
church will once again be the “city shining on a hill”…a
landmark that reminds all traveling through town about
the importance of faith and belief in God. We are blessed
to have such a beautiful church and blessed to have the
financial resources to pay for the project. You and I both
eagerly await the day the crosses stand tall on the front
and back of the church. I suppose it means another trip
up the lift!
This coming Friday is the feast of St. Vincent de Paul. In
seminary this was always a big feast where the
seminarians would go to dinner the Daughters of Charity
at their motherhouse in Emmitsburg, MD. Emmitsburg
was the home of America’s first saint: Saint Elizabeth
Seton. The daughters of charity continue Mother Seton’s
work in healthcare and education throughout the country.
St. Vincent co-founded the daughters of charity with St.
Louise de Marrilac. Canonized in 1737, St. Vincent is
the patron of charitable societies. As you know, we have
a St. Vincent de Paul soup kitchen in Middletown. Our
parish has been very generous in supporting them as well
as our local Food Bank and the Amazing Grace food
pantry. Our Responsorial Psalm states…. “Praise the
Lord who lifts up the poor.” St. Vincent’s conversion
came from hearing a confession of a poor person. It
opened his eyes to the lack of catechesis among the poor.
Inspired, he founded a new religious congregation called
the Congregation of the Mission. Just as Pope Francis is
reminding the world about our collective responsibility
to the poor, so too, St. Vincent de Paul dedicated his life
to acts of charity, organizing groups to provide food and
clothing for all who were poor: orphans, prostitutes, the
sick, the disabled, and the homeless. We would all do
well to follow his example. It is the call of the gospel.

Spaghetti & Meatball Supper
This year the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring three Spaghetti & Meatball Suppers.
The first Supper will take place Friday, September 27, 2013.
The Spaghetti Suppers will commence at 4:30 pm and continue through 7:30 pm. The Suppers include Salad, Bread and
Beverages. The St Patrick Guild will provide desserts. This
Supper Event includes Entertainment and the fun of meeting
friends and winning Raffle Prizes. Prices are Adults

HELPING HAND SCHOLARSHIP
The Knights of Columbus and the Guild of St. Patrick will,
once again, offer four $500 scholarships to active St. Patrick
Church parishioners who are currently enrolled at a Catholic

Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
With all the media coverage of finances and markets and
money, the last thing most of us might want to hear in
church is more money talk. Yet that is what our God has
invited us here for today. As you might expect, Jesus has
some interesting things to say. In particular, he encourages
us to use our wealth and resources for the benefit of others.
So perhaps our prayer today can be for the humility to
recognize that what we have is not ours but God’s, and for
the grace to be able to share it with our sisters and brothers.

Your body fat percentage is your total mass of fat divided by your
total weight. Body fat includes essential body fat and storage body
fat. The percentage of essential body fat for women is greater than
that for men, due to the demands of childbearing and other hormonal
functions. Your body fat percentage is a measure of fitness level, and

Men's ACTS Retreat
St Patrick and St Andrew Churches announce an ACTS
retreat for men to be held Dec 12-15 (Thurs - Fri) at the Immaculata Retreat House in Willimantic. It ends Sunday with
an 11:00 am Mass and Reception at St Andrew's Parish Hall.
Retreat goals are to renew/strengthen your faith, and build community through lasting friendships. Financial difficulties should
not present you from attending.

PRAY for our ACTIVE MILITARY
Have you seen the St. Patrick Prayer Board for active
military personnel who are fighting on the front lines for
our freedom? It’s located in the vestibule of the Church, to
the left as you enter from the front steps. We post the
pictures and rank of relatives of our parish family members
and ask that you remember them in daily prayer. Since
there are many new deployments, please let us know if
there are any family members you would like posted...and
may God keep them safe.

Stipends (Mass offerings):
As of July 11, 2013 the Diocese is recommending that stipends
(Mass offerings) be given at the following levels: weekday
Mass: $10 and weekend Mass: $20. As of August 11, 2013 we
will be implementing these guidelines.
Council of Catholic Women:
The Annual Membership Drive for the Diocesan Council of
Catholic Women will be held the weekend of Sept 28-29th and
run through the month of October.
Bishop Cote to Celebrate 40 DFL Mass Please join us in
prayer this Tuesday, Sept. 24th for Mass with Bishop Cote at
St. Patrick's Cathedral on Broadway in Norwich CT starting at
7:00 PM. The Mass is to prepare and pray for 40 days and 40
nights of prayer, fasting and peaceful vigil in front of Planned
Parenthood at 12 Case St. in Norwich. All are invited. Please
come and bring the family and friends. Light refreshments to
