25th Sunday In Ordinary Time
We pray for all of our catechists and
Faith Formation students who have begun
their new year this past week. Also, with
the beginning of the new school year there is a diocesan
Catholic School Campaign. Catholic Education is vital to
preserving Catholic identity in our young people. Many
of you have benefited from a Catholic Education. I was
fortunate to attend St. Bernard High School in
Uncasville, CT and have many fond memories of years
that were spent there. Please be generous in whichever
way you can.
“My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your
ways my ways says the Lord.” Those words from the
prophet Isaiah can certainly apply to today’s gospel. The
gospel is the parable of the workers in the vineyard. It
took many years for me to understand that the Gospel
says more about God than it does about the workers. It is
about God’s generosity, not the apparent injustice to the
workers who started first.
There are times in our lives when we all want to cry
out to God like Job. It is at those moments when we need
most especially to practice gratitude. To have an attitude
of gratitude re-orients our thought process. It takes the
focus off of ourselves and turns it to God and His
blessings. Perhaps you have seen a “challenge” that has
been on-going on Social Media. A person is challenged
on Facebook or Twitter to acknowledge three things they
are grateful for. They need to do this each day for seven
days. What a beautiful way to make us aware of our
gifts!
I encourage each of us to be generous - not just with
your financial gifts, but gifts like time. Traditional
Stewardship programs focus on the three T’s: Time,
Talent, Treasure. Time can be a wonderful gift - time
spent visiting an elderly parent or grandparent or
someone who is ill. Talent - many have gifts that are
under-utilized: artistic gifts like music (John Higgins
made his presentation for the choir last week), crafts (for
the Guild), knitting (prayer shawls), humor and writing.
Treasure is a gift we can share as well. St. Patrick has
always been blessed in this regard. Just one little note
with regard to treasure. Eleven weeks into our fiscal year
we are in the red $5,500.50. At this point last year we
were in the black $738.50. I believe the slow economy
and the fact that church attendance in the summer tends
to go down are the real reasons. We are monitoring
expenses very carefully and trust in divine providence to
meet our needs.
The East Hampton Food Bank is also seeing many
new clients and continues to provide material needs to
neighbors in our midst. I encourage you to make
donations of food items as they are seeing an increase in
need as well. Thank you for all that you do and thank
you for your generosity.

SPAGHETTI DINNER
Friday September 26th is the
annual Fall Spaghetti Dinner provided by the Belltown Council
of the Knights of Columbus.
Spaghetti, meatballs, sauce, salad, rolls, dessert, hot
and cold beverages are all yours for the “can't be beat” price
of $9 Adults, $7 Seniors, $5 Students. Preschool children are
free. Meals are served from 4:30 until 7:30 PM. Entertainment will be provided. Come and support the Knights who
support the parish and local community.
ST. PATRICK CHOIR
Parish Nurse Health Ministry
The Saint Patrick Parish Nurse Health Ministry has been
serving our parish for the last twelve years. The members are
Registered Nurses, EMT’s, Social Workers, and other
interested parishioners who volunteer their time and expertise
to benefit parishioners of the St. Patrick Church community.
The Ministry meets only twice a year but facilitates the
following: monthly blood pressure screenings; flu vaccine
clinic; support to bereaved families with meals, prayer shawls
and bereavement materials; Mass of Remembrance and a Mass
of Anointing. Timely health tips found in the parish bulletin as
well as health brochures and Care Notes in display cases in the
church and center, are ongoing parts of this ministry.

Rehearsals for the St. Patrick Adult Choir will begin
on Wednesday, September 24th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm
in the choir loft of the church. No prior singing experience is necessary as long as you can carry a

40 DAYS FOR LIFE
Nationwide Pro-Life
Program
This program will begin on
Wednesday, September 24th and
run through Sunday, November 2nd. There will be a “40 Days
for Life” Vigil Mass on Tuesday, Sept. 23rd at 7:00pm at the
Cathedral in Norwich. For forty days the focus will be to
bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity with
prayer, fasting and peaceful activism.

SEPTEMBER HEALTH TIP
Understanding Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis
The colon (large intestine) is part of the digestive tract. It absorbs
water from stool and changes it from liquid to a solid. In certain
cases, small pouches called diverticula can form in the colon wall.
This condition is called diverticulosis. The pouches can become
infected called diverticulitis. This can be painful, but it is very
manageable.
If you have Diverticulosis: Diet changes are often enough to
control symptoms. The main changes are adding fiber (roughage)
and increasing water intake. Fiber absorbs water as it travels
through your colon. This helps your stool stay soft and move
smoothly. Water helps this process. If needed, you may be told to
take over-the-counter stool softeners. To relieve pain, antispasmodic medications may be prescribed. Watch for changes in your
bowel movement and notify your doctor of any changes. Begin an
exercise program, but check with your doctor before starting. Get
plenty of rest and sleep.
If you have Diverticulitis:Treatment depends on how bad your
symptoms are.
Mild Symptoms: You may be put on a liquid diet for a short
time Antibiotics are usually prescribed. If these 2 steps relive your
symptoms, you may then be prescribed a high-fiber diet.
Severe Symptoms: You may need to be admitted to the hospital.
There, you can be given IV antibiotics and fluids. Once symptoms
are under control, the above treatment will be tried. If these do not
control your condition your doctor may discuss the option of having surgery with you.
Key to colon Health: Help keep your colon healthy with a diet
that includes plenty of high-fiber fruits, vegetables, and whole
grains. Drink plenty of liquids like water and juice.

Nat’l 54 Day Rosary Novena for Peace
Bishop Cote has joined with Bishops throughout the United
States in support of the National 54 Day Rosary Novena for Peace
and the Family which will begin on September 29th, the feast of
Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels. The Novena
will conclude on November 21st. The Novena has a special focus
on marriage, human life, and religious freedom.
The purpose of the National Rosary Novena is to help bring
about a spiritual renewal in our Nation through the intercession of
Our Lady of the Rosary. For more information, please consult the

Catholic Charities/Office of Family Life
Catholic Charities Adoption Program will be holding monthly
meetings for couples who are waiting to adopt or who are interested in learning about adoption. Meetings will be held on Sept.
24, Oct. 22 and Nov. 19 at 7:00pm at their office at 331 Main St.,
Norwich. They will also be holding weekly Birth Mother Support
Group meetings every Tuesday, beginning Sept. 16th at 9:30am.

It would be a misrepresentation of the Holy Father’s letter to
present only the challenges. No, the Pope had something much
more important in mind. He calls couples to look first at their
own love and see that it leads them to God. The opening of Pope
Benedict XVI’s encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, shared this important point: “all human love is a sign of the eternal Love that has
created us.” What better example of this love than the love of a
newly engaged couple! “Live this path with intensity,” he says,
and “do not give up on pursuing the lofty ideal of love.” Pursuit
of this ideal, leads us to seek the good of our spouses. It beckons
us to recognize an essential goal of marriage: to be together for
life. Marriage preparation, therefore, is a time to “rediscover for
[our] life as a couple the centrality of Jesus Christ.” Jesus is the
wine of the celebration! “In those who trust in him, the water of
daily life is transformed into the wine of a love that makes life
good, beautiful, and fruitful.” Why would we seek love in any
other place? For God is love!

personnel who are fighting on the front lines for our freedom?

enter from the front steps. We post the pictures and rank of
relatives of our parish family members and ask that you
remember them in daily prayer. Please let us know if there are

keep them safe.

CYO Basketball Registration
CYO Basketball registration for the 2014/2015
season will be held on Tuesday, September 30th from
6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the parish center. Registration
will be for boys and girls who’ll be in 5th through 8th
grade during this school year. There will be a separate
sign-up session for high school boys later this year after
the high school team tryouts or players can register on
September 30th.
The only prerequisite for 5th through 8th graders in
participating in CYO Basketball is that their families
must be registered members of St. Patrick Church and
each player must be registered in the parish’s religious
education program. New players must provide birth
certificates.
Parents are encouraged to bring their child to
registration for uniform fitting. Registration fees are
$150.00 for each child. If a family has more than one
registrant, fees are $130.00 for each additional child.

If religious liberty is not properly understood, all people
suffer and are deprived of the essential contribution to the
common good, be it in education, health care, feeding the hungry, civil rights, and social services that individuals access.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
encourages you to stay informed and to insist upon what belongs to you by right as Catholics and Americans.
If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the health care mandate by calling President Obama at
the White House at 202-456-1111 or U.S. Secretary of Health
and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-2055445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our
First Amendment right to religious freedom.
