This weekend marks the 39th
anniversary of the Supreme Court
decision legalizing abortion. We
pray for an end to abortion and
pray that all of us will contribute
to a culture that affirms life. This
weekend we will also be hosting a representative from
St. John’s school in Middletown. Catholic education is a
top priority for Bishop Cote. In our day and age it is
important for children to be grounded in the moral
principles that guide Catholic Education. Many of you
are the products of Catholic education. Perhaps you were
taught by the Jesuits or members of another religious
order. I am a graduate of St Bernard High School in
Uncasville, CT.
What are some of the highlights of a Catholic
education? First, morality. A catholic school graduate
learns the importance of having Jesus Christ as the center
of one’s life. There are so many competing ideologies
and philosophies competing for attention, it can be hard
to know which path to choose. Secondly, the dignity of
the human person. A Catholic education realizes that
each and every person is created in the image and
likeness of God. Because of this we have a moral
responsibility to care for the poor, the sick, and the aged.
We also learn the importance of family. As Pope John
Paul II stated in his encyclical on the family, “the future
of humanity passes through the human family.” He also
referred to the family as the “domestic church.”
Third, a Catholic education is open to all of the latest
advances in science and technology. Many breakthrough
procedures in medical technology have come from
Catholic researchers and professors. When a student
realizes that the world is God’s classroom then the world
becomes a place not to be feared but a place where one
marvels at the wonders of a God who created a world of
such beauty and intricate detail and harmony.
Lastly, a Catholic education also prepares a
youngster for the rich diversity of cultures that now
comprise the United States. Language courses are one of
the areas that Catholic schools thrive. I had French for
four years. Many are now learning Spanish. Some of you
who attended Jesuit prep schools may have had Latin or
Greek. Those languages are crucial for understanding
medicine and having a deeper richer appreciation and
understanding of scripture.
Two of the pioneers in Catholic School development
were St. Elizabeth Seton and St. John Neumann. We
pray that they will intercede with our Lord to make
Catholic Education thrive in our diocese. Next weekend
there will be a special collection for the Catholic Schools
in our diocese. Prayerfully consider how you can assist
this important work of the church.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS
Dear Members of the St. Patrick
Parish Family,
In just a few short months 47 of our young
people will be receiving the sacrament of
First Holy Communion. I am asking each member of our
parish family to spiritually support these children by becoming a prayer partner. If you wish to participate please
take a child’s name from the basket in front of the tabernacle and offer prayers for the child until their First Holy
Communion date which is indicated on the card. If you
wish, you may send a card or note to the child on their First
Communion by leaving it in the basket. Thank you for
your generosity and prayers.

Spaghetti & Meatball
Supper
Planned by the Knights of
Columbus, East Hampton
The Knights of Columbus are announcing their semiannual Spaghetti & Meatball Supper to be held on
Friday, January 27, 2012.
The Supper will be from 4:30-7:30 pm, and
will include salad, bread and beverages. The St Patrick
Guild will provide dessert. This Supper Event also
includes Entertainment and the fun of meeting friends
and winning Raffle Prizes. Adults $7; Seniors $6,
Children $5, Under 6 yrs Free. SNOW DATE: Feb 3.
MARCH FOR LIFE; Both adults and teens marked the
39th Anniversary of Roe v Wade by attending a pro-life
Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Hartford, celebrated by
Archbishop Henry Mansell. It was followed by a march
to the state capitol where we participated in a peaceful,
prayerful rally for life.
SPEAKER 1/22; Dr Theresa Krankowski, director of
Saint Gerard’s Center for Life in Hartford, will be the
speaker for this Sunday’s life night.

COMING SOON—ON-LINE GIVING
Dear Parishioners,
For several years now the Board of Finance has been looking into
the possibility of e-giving. E-giving is beginning to be used for
financial transactions in many sectors of American life. In fact, a
number of parishioners indicated in our Stewardship campaign this
fall that they would like to explore this option. E-giving could replace the traditional process of writing a check and putting an envelope in the weekly offertory. The Board of Finance has decided to
pursue e-giving and we are proud to announce that it will be available soon. The parish has retained the services of an outside vendor, Vanco, who is a leader in the software development of egiving. They provide a soup to nuts program that is customized to
the needs of each parish or church. For St. Patrick there will be
opportunities to give on a bi-weekly or semi-monthly (1st & 15th) or
monthly basis. All one will need to do is visit the parish website,
follow the instructions and submit your information. Vanco meets
the highest industry standards for financial security. We, on the
Board of Finance are excited about this possibility. It further allows
us to make good on our promise of greater financial transparency
and to also provide other more convenient means for people to
give. Stay tuned for more information to follow in the coming
weeks!

HELPING HAND APPLICATIONS
The Knights of Columbus and the Guild are happy to announce that applications for A HELPING HAND award
are available in the Parish Office. We are awarding a total
of four (4) $500.00 gifts to active Saint Patrick parishioners currently enrolled at East Catholic HS, Mercy HS and
Xavier HS. Applications should be returned to our parish
secretary in an envelop by February 15, 2012.
THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
The Knights of Columbus donated $700.00 for the
building of a "Happy House" for a family to be selected
in Jeremie, Haiti. The "Happy House" will be built
through the efforts of the Haitian Health Foundation
located in Norwich. The family that is picked will assist
in the
construction of their new home.
On Friday, January 13, 2012 Grand Knight John
Hines and Knight Gary Corliss were on hand at the
Haitian Health Foundation to assist in loading materials
into a container for shipment to Haiti. The $700.00 gift
is used to buy the building materials (lumber, roofing, etc.) here in CT that are then shipped to Haiti.

ST. PATRICK PRAYER LINE
REQUEST
The St. Patrick Prayer Line is looking for your help.
We need new members who can take up the cause and
assist us in continuing this ministry of love and prayers
for the intentions of our parishioners.
Being a member is really easy and takes very little
time. When someone has a prayer request, they call
Jann Dalton @ 860-267-5720 or Pat Powers @860-2678529 to start the prayers rolling. The caller tells you
who they want prayers for and what is the intention (can
also be done anonymously or as a Special Intention).
When you receive a call to pray for a specific need, you
are asked to pause, raise that intention up in a brief
prayer, then call the next person on the list after your
name. You can continue to pray for that intention as you
feel led by the Holy Spirit to do so.
Please prayerfully consider joining this worthwhile
ministry. What better way to celebrate the love of Jesus
than by caring for your neighbor?
If you work during the day, you can use your cell
number or you can be called or emailed in the evening,
just let us know at the numbers above.
There is nothing so rewarding as being told that our
prayers were answered.

military personnel who are fighting on the front lines for
our freedom? It’s located in the vestibule of the Church, to
