Joel Osteen has built
Lakewood Church into one of
the largest congregations in the
United States. Week after week
he fills the Compaq center in
Houston with inspirational
homilies. Here is a story taken from his book “Every Day
a Friday.” In a chapter titled “Be A Dream Releaser” he
has the following to say: “Give up your comfort to
comfort others. Jesus told us about the Good Samaritan
who was riding his donkey and saw a man who had been
beaten and left for dead on the roadside. He lifted the
injured man onto his donkey and took him to a place
where he could recover. I love the fact that the Good
Samaritan let the injured man ride while he walked
because sometimes to comfort others, you may have to
give up your own comfort. Sometimes you have to trade
places with those you are hurting. To be a healer, you
will be inconvenienced. You might have to miss dinner
in order to wipe away a tear. You might have to skip a
workout to help a couple work through their challenges.
You may even have to drive across town and pick up that
co-worker struggling with an addiction and then bring
him to church. A true healer doesn’t mind
inconvenience, or taking risks in the course of reaching
out to those who truly need a hand up. Jim Bakker, the
fallen minister and co-host of the PTL club television
show, went to prison for five years on fraud convictions.
When he was about to be released, Franklin Graham, Bill
Graham’s son, contacted him and said his family had
rented him a house and provided a car for him.
“Franklin, you can’t do that,’ Bakker told him. ‘I have
too much baggage. You’ll be criticized. Your ministry
can’t be associated with me.’ Franklin said, ‘Sure we
can, Jim. You were our friend before, and you will be
our friend afterward.’ The first Sunday after his release,
Jim Bakker was living temporarily in a halfway house as
a condition of the court. Ruth Graham, Billy Graham’s
wife, called the place and asked the man in charge if Jim
could have permission to leave and come to church with
the Grahams that Sunday. The judge agreed. When Jim
entered the Church, they ushered him right down to the
very front row and sat him next to Franklin Graham. The
Grahams had ten or fifteen family members there. There
were two vacant seats next to Jim Bakker before the
music started. He didn’t know who they were for. But
when the music kicked up, a side door opened and out
walked Billy and Ruth Graham. They sat right next to
Jim Bakker. He had been out of prison only forty-eight
hours, but the whole world was put on notice that the
Grahams still considered Jim Bakker a friend.” The
Grahams were loving Jim Bakker back into wholeness.
They were acting as healers. This is how our lives will
bear fruit if we befriend the friendless.

THE FOOD BANK NEEDS YOU
The Food Bank is gearing up for the town wide Postal Food
Drive MAY 12th. We are the busiest we have ever been and
all donations are very much appreciated. We have plenty of
Pasta. Our needs are: soup, baked beans, canned meals
(ravioli), canned fruit, peanut butter, jelly, juice, ketchup,
mustard, cereal, hand soap, tooth brushes, tooth paste, and
shampoo. Again, thank you for your continued support. Deb

SCHOLARSHIPS
The St. Patrick Guild & Knights of Columbus will be
awarding a $1000 scholarship each to a graduating high
school senior. Applicants must be graduating from high
school this spring, be an active member of St. Patrick
Parish & plan to further their education at a one, two or
four year school, college/university. Applications are
available in the Parish Office. Submit a completed application, together with a transcript of all high school grades

Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
As the world of nature blossoms with the fresh growth of
springtime, today’s Easter season liturgy bids us sing a new
song to the Lord. Through holy baptism God has worked

GUILD NEWS
First, I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who
helped out & attended the Guild Tea, making it such a fun &
successful event. Next, I’d like to extend a huge thank you
to all the wonderful hostesses & helpers, and especially Barbara Casey & her family for overseeing the tea & putting in
so much advance preparation for it. Finally, I would like to
thank the lovely Ms. Michaela Harrington for such an extraordinary performance at the tea. Great job everyone!
On another note, our next Guild meeting will be held on
Tuesday, May 8th at 6:30pm and will include a potluck dinner and door prize raffle. For this last business meeting of
the year, we would like you all to come with an idea of how
this year went and what you’d like to see for next year! Ideal
-ly, we want to hear about “your Dream Guild!” I hope all
123 members can make it so we have a chance to hear all of
your ideas and thoughts!

HEALTH TIP MAY 2012
These days with many people owning the new phones
(iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Windows phones) health
information is literally at your finger tips any time you need
it. There are apps for health, wellness, diet and fitness as
well as many others. “APP” is an abbreviation for application
software. Many of these apps can be obtained for as little as
$1 and the majority are under $5. Many health and fitness
magazines also offer apps for their publications. Some of
the diet related apps include calorie trackers, body mass index (BMI) calculators and weight-loss plans. If you want to
check on a particular symptom you can download the free
WebMD app from iTunes or www.webmd.com/
mobile. This is a reputable source for medical information
but as always no app can ever replace your doctor’s advice
so speak with him/her as well.
KNIGHT’S NEWS
The Knights of Columbus held its monthly meeting on
April 9, 2012. Voted as March Knight of the Month was
Raymond Sasso for his worthy work on the floor during the
Fish Fry Dinners. Selected as the Family of the Month for
March is Keith and Kim Lanou.
Helping Hands Scholarships. The Knights and the Guild
awarded a $500.00 Helping Hands Scholarship to four families who are sending their children to a Catholic school.
Basketball Clinic. Peter Zawisza reported that a girl and
a boy had advanced to the State finals of the "Free Throw
Championships." The next Knights' youth activity will be a
basketball clinic this summer.
Scholarship Committee. May 16 is the deadline for submitting applications for two $1,000.00 scholarships to be
awarded to graduating high school seniors who plan to further their education. The Knights and the St Patrick Guild
will be awarding the scholarships. Knights on the selection
committee are Bill Russ, Walter Jedziniak and Al Vela, the
Guild members are; Debbie Hawkins, MaryLu Wall and
Daisy Conway.
Easter Food Drive. Gary Corliss who supervised the
Easter Food Drive reported that the following items were
collected during this worthy community food drive: 15 crates
of food, more than 25 hams and $222.00. Gary informed the
Knights that an average of four crates of food are collected
weekly.
Wheelchairs for US Veterans. The Council voted to donate $300.00 to the American Wheelchair Mission for the
purchase of two wheelchairs for our veterans.
Fish Fry Dinners. The following were recognized for
their talents and time that helped make the annual Fish Frys a
huge success this Lenten season: the East Hampton HS Jazz
Band, the two Life Teen bands, youths representing the St
Patrick Confirmation class, and of course, "The Piano Man."
The Knights also expressed appreciation for other East
Hampton businesses for their continued support of the Fish
Fry Dinners.

The next Women’s ACTS retreat will be May 31-June 3 at
the Immaculata Retreat Center in Willimantic. For information

DEFENDING OUR
RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
Recently, the five Connecticut democratic candidates
running for the nomination for the U.S. Senate stated
that they would support the idea of allowing abortions to
be performed at Catholic hospitals. Abortions are a violation of the natural law and are prohibited by the four
Catholic hospitals in Connecticut. As in the case of the
federal health care mandate, we cannot permit the government to trample on our religious freedom by requiring us to go against our religious convictions.

Have you seen the St. Patrick Prayer Board for active
military personnel who are fighting on the front lines for
our freedom? It’s located in the vestibule of the Church,
