S t. A l b e r t t h e G r e a t Catholic Parish Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 19, 2014 Prayer for Martin Luther King Jr. Day Heavenly Father, you made all people in the world. On this day, help us to remember that everyone is precious to you. Inspire us to reflect on this truth: That although we are not all the same, we all have equal value in your sight. On this day, help us to always judge the actions of others based only upon your standards of right and wrong and never on the color of one's skin. And on this day, let us not only remember past wrongs committed, but look ahead with hope to a blessed future. Amen. From the Pastor Becoming Catholic This week’s gospel offers another take on Jesus’ Baptism; “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Last week we heard from Matthew’s gospel where the Blessed Trinity testifies to the calling and mission of Christ. There are few events in the life of Jesus that are represented in all four of the gospels. The Baptism of the Lord is one of them. This week’s session is on the Four Faces of Jesus. The four Evangelists – Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John – present us four very different portraits of Jesus. The Gospels are so very important in our faith. We learn about God’s revelation through His Son that was here with us on Earth in our space and time, and about His teachings and His acts. Vatican II re-established the schedule for the reading of the Four Gospels in the liturgical year. The Silver Book of the Gospels is presented on our Altar during our Sunday liturgies. Pope Francis’ First Apostolic Exhortation EVANGELII GAUDIUM [The Joy of the Gospel] centers on the proclamation of the Gospel in today’s world. You are encouraged to listen carefully during the Year A (Matthew) readings and think how they show a different “face” of Jesus than in Luke’s gospel from last year’s Year of Faith. It is a path to evolving a ever deepening relationship with our Savior and brother, Jesus Christ. The RCIA is an ongoing process through the year. For more information contact Julie Burt – RCIA Coordinator 298-1122 ext216 or [email protected] Dear People of St. Albert the Great, It seems the Christmas Season went by quickly and then the great polar freeze and other events happened and here we are in mid-January. I never had a chance to thank everyone for the reverent liturgies that so many attended, so many volunteered their time and so many spent endless hours planning. I also want to thank Sue and Dan Reichert for all the hours of work they spent restoring our Nativity Scene statues over the summer. They are restored to their former beauty. This was another wonderful example of the spirit of living the faith and serving your parish I see at St. Albert. Thanks to everyone for all that you do. I hope you all received your invitation to the parish 75th Anniversary Dinner Dance scheduled for February 14th at the Presidential. We hope to have a large crowd to celebrate this important mile mark in the life of our parish. If you did not receive a invitation call the parish or involvement office and they will gladly send you one. One of the bands that will play at this event will be parishioner Joe Aceto and his 16 member band. Joe, I understand, is known for the Big Band sound. Our planners said we will also have a DJ present—so, many years of music from the many decades St. Albert Parish has been established will be enjoyed. Please plan to attend. Update on the Health of your priests: Fr Ned has recovered from his bout with a bad cold, and both Fr Gary and Fr Goetz are on the mend. I have run into some problems with my shoulder— and will need surgery soon, as well as some other health related issues. I would appreciate your prayers. Be assured, I pray daily for you. In 1994 the rock star, Rod Stewart, drew a world-record crowd of 3.5 million to a concert on the Copacaban Beach in Rio de Janeiro. When Jesus entered the small town of Bethany, he was still unknown and no one came to see him. John the Baptist had to point him out to the crowd: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Jesus’ fame would spread, and 2,000 years later, mammoth crowds of 4.5 million came to see Christ’s Vicar on Earth, Pope John Paul at Youth Day in Manila. Last year Pope Francis blessed an estimated 3.2 million World Youth Day attendees who crowded the same beach in Rio where Rod Stewart play his concert.
