STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily
portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my
instructions or not.” (Exodus 16:4)
God frowns upon it when we take or keep more than we
need. When the Israelites gathered more than their daily
portion of manna, that which they hoarded away became
wormy and rotten. In the same way, God calls us today to
be content with a fair portion and to be willing to share the
rest.

Question to Ponder:
What was something about which you “grumbled”
during this past week’s journey toward the Promised
Land, and what gift “rained down from heaven,”
causing you to turn your grumbling into praise?
This weekend we continue with important
readings on the Eucharist. Pope Benedict
XVI notes in his Post-Synodal Apostolic
Exhortation The Sacrament of Charity:
“We cannot remain passive before certain
processes of globalization which not infrequently increase the
gap between the rich and the poor worldwide. We must denounce
those who squander the earth’s riches, provoking the inequalities
that cry out to heaven. (James 5: 4)……The Lord Jesus, the bread
of eternal life, spurs us to be mindful of the situations of extreme
poverty in which a greater part of humanity still lives; these are
the situations for which human being bear a clear and disquieting
responsibility.” Our participation in the Eucharist unites us with
Jesus Christ, the poor one. St. Paul in his letter to Timothy (1 Tim
6) notes: “Tell the rich in the present age not to be proud and not
to rely on so uncertain a thing as wealth but rather on God, who
richly provides us with all good things for our enjoyment.”
This is the proposition of David Platt whose book Radical:
taking back your faith from the American Dream I referenced in
my homily last week. Here are his words: “ We are starting to
redefine Christianity. We are giving in to the dangerous
temptation to take the Jesus of the bible and twist him into a
version of Jesus we are more comfortable with. A nice, middleclass American Jesus. A Jesus who doesn’t mind materialism and
who would never call us to give away everything we have. A
Jesus who would not expect us to forsake our closest
relationships so that he receives all our affection. A Jesus who is
fine with nominal devotion that does not infringe on our
comforts, because, after all, he loves us just the way we are. A
Jesus who wants us to be balanced, who wants us to avoid
dangerous extremes, and who, for that matter, wants us to avoid
danger all together. A Jesus who brings us comfort and prosperity
as we live out our Christian spin on the American dream. But do
you and I realize what we are doing at this point? We are
molding Jesus into our image. He is beginning to look a lot like
us because, after all, that is what we are most comfortable with.
And the danger now is that when we gather in our church
buildings to sing and lift up our hands in worship, we may not
actually be worshipping Jesus. Instead we may be worshipping
ourselves.” This is a danger for any religious body. I, as a pastor,
and we, as a congregation, have to be sure we are preaching and
teaching the truth of the Gospel. When I found Jesus in a soup
kitchen in the South Bronx it opened my eyes to a deeper
understanding of the Eucharist. The Eucharist and the work of the
soup kitchen are one.
I will close with some more words of David Platt-words that
challenge us to a life of discipleship. “The price of our nondiscipleship is high for those without Christ. It is high also for the
poor of this world. Consider the cost when Christians ignore
Jesus’ commands to sell their possessions and give to the poor
and instead choose to spend their resources on better comforts,
larger homes, nicer cars, and more stuff. Consider the cost when
these Christians gather in churches and choose to spend millions
of dollars on nice buildings to drive up to, cushioned chairs to sit
in, and endless programs to enjoy for themselves. Consider the
cost for the starving multitudes who sit outside the gate of
Contemporary Christian affluence.” Tough words, but words to
live by. Archbishop Romero of San Salvador heeded those
words. He paid for it with his life. He denounced the injustice of
the government and was shot to death at the exact moment of the
consecration.

HEALTH TIP AUGUST 2012
To Buy or Not to Buy Organic Food? Going organic is
good for you and the Earth, but since organic can cost 50%100% more. The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit
organization in Washington, D.C., recommends going organic
on produce that is most susceptible to pesticide residue, like:
~~Peaches are most susceptible to pesticide residue due to the
skin type ~~Apples if you eat the peel where the pesticides accumulate ~~Bell peppers are among those vegetables with
higher pesticide residues ~~Nectarines: scrub or remove the peel
to help reduce pesticide residues ~~Celery: reduce exposure by
thoroughly washing the stalks under streaming water ~~The
USDA has found almost 30 pesticide residues on pears. It's a
good idea to scrub a pear's skin to reduce pesticide residue and
bacteria ~~ Try to avoid imported grapes, which often have
higher pesticide residues ~~The USDA Pesticide Data Program
found 57 pesticide residues in spinach and 51 in lettuce. Buy
organic or grow your own (greens do well even in large patio
containers)
Look for the USDA Organic Seal Look for the organic
seal which means the food is grown, harvested, and processed
according to USDA standards that include restrictions on
amounts and residues of pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics.
Natural pesticides are allowed. Organic foods cannot be treated
with any sewage sludge, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation.

St. Patrick's is cosponsoring a men's retreat with St Andrews, Colchester, that begins Thursday, Sept 6, 2012. The
retreat includes opportunities for daily Mass, the sacraments, Adoration, and private reflection. The retreat ends
on Sunday, Sept 9 with a 10:30 Mass at St Patrick’s. Reception will follow in our Hall. Transportation will be provided to Immaculata Retreat House, Willimantic. Cost of

Christmas in August for Haiti
Will you help us collect Christmas presents for kids in
Haiti? Diocese of Norwich Outreach to Haiti is collecting
toys for children enrolled in the Education Scholarship
Program in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Over 300 children attend school because of this program, through which sponsors in the U.S. pay school tuition for students whose
families could otherwise not afford to pay.
We are collecting new, unwrapped toy donations for
students in kindergarten through high school. In order to
ship the toys to Haiti in time for Christmas, the toy drive
will run through September 23, 2012. You can drop your
gifts off in Parish Office during regular office hours.
