STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS
“After the fire, there was a small whispering sound.” 1
Kings 19:12
For many of us, our prayers are petitions to God, asking
Him for something we want. How many times do we
take time in silence, to ask God what He wants from us?
How do we know what God wants us to do unless we
listen for Him on a regular basis?

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
St. Patrick has had a Relay for Life
Team participating in the Relay for Life in East Haddam
for the past few years. This year there is a Luminaria
contest – we have to sell at least 100 Luminaria before
Sept. lst - and we invite you to help us win a prize for our
Team!
Relay for Life is the signature event of the
American Cancer Society. Participants buy white bags
with candles at $5 each to honor our loved ones who
have been touched by cancer. We will be selling the
Luminaria bags after Masses during the month of
August. All you have to do is complete a form naming
the person you want honored and letting us know who
will decorate the bag (you can do it yourself or we will
do it for you).
Relay for Life will be held September 6th , 2014 at
the East Haddam Elementary School, starting at 12 noon.
The Luminaria ceremony begins at 9 pm for those who
want to participate. It’s a very beautiful ceremony – the
candles are lit and we walk in silence to the sound of a
bagpipe as we honor those we have lost and those still
fighting.
It is a heartfelt ceremony of how cancer
touches us all.
We need your help in winning this contest! Please
contact Jann Dalton (860) 267-5720 or Dani Annino
(860) 267-6644 to help cover the August Masses or for

You can enter our Team name – St. Patrick Church
(make sure it’s in East Haddam, Ct) – or Jann Dalton
– and help us reach our goal for 2014. It’s a way to
celebrate cancer survivors, remember lost loved ones and
honor those still fighting.
Once again, our very own Kevin Reich has
donated his 3-bedroom house on Cape-Cod as a
prize! All those raising more than $300 for the St.
Patrick team will be entered into a drawing for a getaway
at the Cape!
Raise more than $100 and you’ll be entered in a
drawing for: $50 gift certificate for Angelico’s
Restaurant, East Hampton, CT, $50 gift certificate for
Sadler’s Restaurant, Marlborough, Ct., $50 gift
certificate for It’s So Ranunculus, Marlborough, CT.
You may win a prize and every dollar raised helps
us fight this terrible disease that takes too many from our
Parish. For more information, see Jann Dalton (860) 2675710 or Dani Annino (860) 267-6644.

but the truth is that it takes a lot of solid, stable marriages to
create a village. (Diane Sollee)

August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. On this day, when we are invited
by our loving God to celebrate Mary’s assumption into
heaven, we have great hope that we, like Mary, will one
day live forever in God’s presence. Let us be inspired
by her faith and encouraged by her help as we pray together, and then go forth to share our hope with the rest
of the world.
August 9-10, 2014
Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
In the middle of our Ordinary Time summer, God has
gathered us here today to renew our faith and be
nourished once again to carry out our Christian mission.
Saint Paul tells us that he would sacrifice his very
relationship with Christ if that would help his people,
Israel, to see their salvation in Christ. What sacrifices
would we make so that others might have faith? Let us
pray for the strength to hear and act on God’s voice in
our lives.

Still, over 15,000 CT abortions occur

“To say a child is unwanted says nothing about the child, but
it says much about the person who does not want his or her

When was the last time I experienced God as really absent
from my life? Really present? To whom am I called to be

AUGUST HEALTH TIP
Heat Exhaustion: This is a heat-related illness caused by
the loss of water and electrolytes from the body. It causes
excess sweating, extreme fatigue, weakness, dizziness,
nausea, vomiting and headache. Sometimes it causes muscle cramping.
Risk factors are: Strenuous exertion in high temperatures, Poor physical conditions, Loss of salt or water by
reducing oral intake, Overuse of diuretics (water pills),
Pre-existing illness with fever, Alcohol use and clothing
too warm for the climate
Heat Exhaustion can lead to dehydration: The human
body is comprised largely of water. If you lose more fluids
than you take in, you can become dehydrated. This means
there are not enough fluids in our body for it to function
right.
What to do for dehydration: Drinking plenty of liquids,
water is best. Doctor may advise electrolyte solution or
sports drinks. Avoid alcohol; caffeine and carbonated
drinks can lead to increased dehydration.
Prevention of Heat Exhaustion/Dehydration:
Watch for early signs of heat illness and stop physical exertion before they worsen - minimize skin exposure; use a
hat and lightweight, light colored clothing - do not exercise in hot weather - avoid dehydration by drinking 8
ounces of fluid for every 15 minutes of moderate exercise
- limit alcohol and caffeine use in hot weather.
Get prompt Medical Attention if there is: Continued
vomiting, worsening symptoms of weakness or dizziness,
not able to keep fluids down, body temperature of 103F
oral or higher, confusion or coma, hot, flushed skin without sweating.
Defending Our Religious Liberty
#128 Aug. 10, 2014
The fight for religious freedom is not a Catholic issue, not
a Jewish issue, not an Orthodox, Mormon, or Muslim issue. It is an American issue. The passage of the Affordable Care Act has dangerous implications on all religions.
If we permit the government to have the final say on what
type of health care coverage a religious organization must
provide, we are basically enabling them to interfere in all
religious liberty concerns in areas such as immigration and
humanitarian services.
If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the mandate by calling President Obama at the
White House at 202-456-1111 or Sylvia Mathews Burwell
of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at
202-205-5445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Over the last several weeks, the history of
confirmation has been set out as a rite following baptism
and preceding First Communion. Eucharist was a
sacrament of spiritual maturity, attuned to the legal age
of majority, which was considered to be fourteen years
or so. Medieval bishops were often generous, if not
especially pious, in seeing to it that children were
confirmed before adulthood.
A pattern more familiar to us surfaced in the
Diocese of Toulon in France in 1748, where it was
decreed that “children are to be confirmed only after
receiving First Communion.” This was an amazing shift
in practice that undermined centuries of theology and
tradition by which confirmation was seen as a bridge
between font and table. The innovation swept through
France and across Europe, despite constant complaints
from Rome. French-trained bishops like Cheverus of
Boston and Carroll of Baltimore, founders of the
American church, established the practice here. The
order of the sacraments was thus disrupted in France and
in the United States, and remained an eccentric exception
to the rule until big developments in 1910.
