This year there is a Luminaria contest – we have to sell at least 100 Luminaria before Sept. lst - and we invite you to help us win a prize for our Team! Relay for Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society. Participants buy white bags with candles at $5 each to honor our loved ones who have been touched by cancer. We will be selling the Luminaria bags after Masses during the month of August. All you have to do is complete a form naming the person you want honored and letting us know who will decorate the bag (you can do it yourself or we will do it for you). Relay for Life will be held September 6th , 2014 at the East Haddam Elementary School, starting at 12 noon. The Luminaria ceremony begins at 9 pm for those who want to participate. It’s a very beautiful ceremony – the candles are lit and we walk in silence to the sound of a bagpipe as we honor those we have lost and those still fighting. It is a heartfelt ceremony of how cancer touches us all. We need your help in winning this contest! Please contact Jann Dalton (860) 267-5720 or Dani Annino (860) 267-6644 to help cover the August Masses or for Saturday, Aug 16 5:00pm The Lanzi and the Ziemba Families req. by Jack, Susan and Family more information about Relay for Life. Matrimony A beautiful sacrament full of blessings, romance, love, commitment, comedy, giving, new life, joys, sorrows, adventure, challenges, responsibilities, growth, memories and more. They say it takes a village to raise a child. That may be so, but the truth is that it takes a lot of solid, stable marriages to create a village. (Diane Sollee) Any fool can have a trophy wife. It takes a real man to have a trophy marriage. (Diane Sollee) You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this day, when we are invited by our loving God to celebrate Mary’s assumption into heaven, we have great hope that we, like Mary, will one day live forever in God’s presence. Let us be inspired by her faith and encouraged by her help as we pray together, and then go forth to share our hope with the rest of the world. August 9-10, 2014 Introduction-Liturgy of the Word: In the middle of our Ordinary Time summer, God has gathered us here today to renew our faith and be nourished once again to carry out our Christian mission. Saint Paul tells us that he would sacrifice his very relationship with Christ if that would help his people, Israel, to see their salvation in Christ. What sacrifices would we make so that others might have faith? Let us pray for the strength to hear and act on God’s voice in our lives. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 19th Sunday in Ordinary READINGS FOR THE WEEK Saturday: Hb 1:12 — 2:4; Ps 9:8-13; Mt 17:14-20 Sunday: 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-13a; Ps 85:9-14; Rom 9:1-5; Mt 14:22-33 Monday: Ez 1:2-5, 24-28c; Ps 148:1-2, 11-14; Mt 17:22-27 Tuesday: Ez 2:8 — 3:4; Ps 119:14, 24, 72, 103, 111, 131; Mt 18:1-5, 10, 12-14 Wednesday: Ez 9:1-7; 10:18-22; Ps 113:1-6; Mt 18:15-20 Thursday: Ez 12:1-12; Ps 78:56-59, 61-62: Mt 18:21 — 19:1 Friday: Rv 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab; Ps 45:10-12, 16; 1 Cor 15:20-27; Lk 1:39-56 Aug 9: Ann Erikson 2009, Jane Rinaldi 1991, Lena Staino 1985, Elizabeth Wallett 1974 Aug 10: Fr. August 9-10, 2014 AUGUST HEALTH TIP Heat Exhaustion: This is a heat-related illness caused by the loss of water and electrolytes from the body. Defending Our Religious Liberty #128 Aug. 10, 2014 The fight for religious freedom is not a Catholic issue, not a Jewish issue, not an Orthodox, Mormon, or Muslim issue. It is an American issue. The passage of the Affordable Care Act has dangerous implications on all religions. If we permit the government to have the final say on what type of health care coverage a religious organization must provide, we are basically enabling them to interfere in all religious liberty concerns in areas such as immigration and humanitarian services. If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the mandate by calling President Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 or Sylvia Mathews Burwell of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services at 202-205-5445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom. 19th Sunday in Ordinary HELP WANTED The Diocese of Norwich seeks a Development Coordinator of the Catholic Charities Ministry to organize all aspects of fundraising and development efforts in concert with the ministry’s mission and strategic plan. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the last several weeks, the history of confirmation has been set out as a rite following baptism and preceding First Communion. Eucharist was a sacrament of spiritual maturity, attuned to the legal age of majority, which was considered to be fourteen years or so. Medieval bishops were often generous, if not especially pious, in seeing to it that children were confirmed before adulthood. A pattern more familiar to us surfaced in the Diocese of Toulon in France in 1748, where it was decreed that “children are to be confirmed only after receiving First Communion.” This was an amazing shift in practice that undermined centuries of theology and tradition by which confirmation was seen as a bridge between font and table. The innovation swept through France and across Europe, despite constant complaints from Rome. French-trained bishops like Cheverus of Boston and Carroll of Baltimore, founders of the American church, established the practice here. The order of the sacraments was thus disrupted in France and in the United States, and remained an eccentric exception to the rule until big developments in 1910. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.
