Extracorporeal Life Support Assurance Monitor
The new Transonic ELSA® (Extracorporeal Life Support Assurance)
Monitor measures Oxygenator Blood Volume, Delivered Blood
Flow and Recirculation during veno-venous extracorporeal
membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO).
ELSA® measurements confirm that the ECMO circuit is
functioning as intended. They are used to guide the positioning
of the dual lumen catheter in order to optimally balance Flow
with Recirculation so that the patient receives the oxygenation
necessary to maintain life and promote recovery.

ECMO
When critically ill patients’ lives rest on accurate assessments
of their conditions and their individual responses to
treatment, the new Transonic bedside ELSA® (Extracorporeal
Life Support Assurance) ICU Monitor provides intensivists
with rapid quantitative data throughout the course of life
support. This timely data assists the clinician in guiding
interventions to minimize recirculation and fully optimize the
oxygenation therapy.1
To generate ELSA® measurements, flow dilution sensors
are simply clipped onto the supply and return lines of a
VV ECMO circuit. Once the software program is opened
on the ELSA Monitor, on-screen instructions are displayed.
Actual delivered blood flow measurements are immediately
available. A small saline bolus is used to calculate either
percent recirculation or oxygenator blood volume.
Percent recirculation provides the physician with real-time
information about the patient’s response to treatment.
Oxygenator blood volume insures adequate anticoagulation
to maintain oxygenator functionality.
