With all the huge challenges society faces in the 21st century, we are in need of big innovations more than any time in human history. Billions of people now live in a digital world, but many observers argue that we are no longer willing or able to create the type of transformative inventions that will meet these challenges. However, we must look at the art of invention in a very different way than in the past, and the unique environment at the MIT Media Lab exemplifies this. Conventional disciplines are checked at the door and researchers - including computer scientists, social scientists, engineers, artists, designers, neuroscientists and more - are free to invent and create according to their passions. Most importantly, they just build what they are thinking about rather than thinking about what to build.
