The UV radiation is divided into three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC is the wave length between 100-280nm this wave length is known as the Germicidal Wavelength 2 major peaks are utilized in this process 254nm and 185nm The 185nm light carries more energy than the 254nm light, it produces traces of ozone which enhance its oxidation capabilities, 254nm light, on the other hand, can destroy residual ozone in the treated water. Microorganisms in the water are exposed to ultraviolet light when they pass through UVC emitting lamps. The UV energy penetrates the outer cell wall, penetrating further to the DNA/RNA and alters the genetic sequence and preventing the micro-organism from being able to multiply or reproduce and thus loses its pathogenic effect and no longer posses health risk. UV technology is capable of destroying more than 99.99% of all pathogens within seconds, without addition of chemicals, without harmful side effects, inexpensively, highly efﬁciently and absolutely reliable. How do UV Systems work? Ultraviolet light is also suitable for oxidation and therefore is excellent for the reduction of undesirable substances in water such as hydrocarbons, chlorine, NDMA and TOC reduction at 185nm In combination with ozone, peroxide and/or chlorine, UV-light can additionally be used for advanced oxidation processes (AOP) for degradation of persistent pollutants from drinking water or wastewater.
