This spark is the aspect of Yechida, a spark of the general Yechida, which is the soul of Moshiach. This revelation causes an innovation in his entire existence and in all his concerns, that they all become permeated with the aspect of Yechida. The main thing is that through this, the revelation and coming of Moshiach are put into effect, in literal terms, as a soul in a body, "a king from the House of David," etc. (Rosh Chodesh Kislev 5752; Hisvaaduyos 5752 vol. 1, p. 312) Thursday, 2 Kislev Thursday, 2 Kislev Revolutions--Signs of Redemption Revolutions--Signs of Redemption There are those who wonder about the talk in recent days, that we are standing at the end of exile, the footsteps of Moshiach. They ask, "How do we see this?..." It's very surprising that they don't think deeply into the events that are transpiring in the world, events that are revealed and publicized!... In the recent era (starting from the past few years and intensifying from day to day) we see across the world tremendous revolutions, from one extreme to the other. It is with Hashem's great mercy that these revolutions are occurring quietly… Revolutions in the world are one of the signs brought in the Midrashim of our sages, of blessed memory, describing the period of the "footsteps of Moshiach." When we see great revolutions in our times, this is an additional sign that we are now in the final moments of the "footsteps of Moshiach," and imminently and immediately, our righteous Moshiach will come. (Shabbos Parshas Toldos 5744; Hisvaaduyos 5744, vol. 1, p. 513) Shabbos Parshas Toldos, 4 Kislev Sunday, 5 Kislev Bringing the Two Eras Yaakov Will Exult The interpretation of "All the days of your life, to bring the days of Moshiach" is that all of one's life energy, at every moment, is invested in bringing about the days of Moshiach. In other words, not only when one is thinking and speaking and doing activities to bring Moshiach, but at all times, the very essence of his life is to bring the days of Moshiach. There is a lesson we can learn from precise wording of the phrase "to bring the days of Moshiach." The word l'havie, "to bring," is used, rather than the more standard word l'rabos, "to include." Also, "days of Moshiach" is written in plural. This teaches us that when the life of every single Jew is in the matter of Moshiach, as discussed above, this naturally leads to the situation of the days of Moshiach, when the essence of the Jewish people will be revealed in actuality. The fact that "days of Moshiach" is written in plural could be alluding to the two general epochs in the days of Moshiach. Shabbos Toldos 5752. Hisvaaduyos 5752 vol. 1, p. 321 When the Redemption will come, Yakov will rejoice more than all the other forefathers, as it says, "Yakov will exult, Yisrael will rejoice." Why will Yakov rejoice more than the other forefathers? Rav says: When one marries off a daughter, who rejoices more than the father of the bride? In other words, when the Redemption will come to the world, to Israel, Yakov will rejoice more than the other forefathers. Therefore it is written, "Yakov will exult, Yisrael will rejoice." Moreover, Moshiach will not wait for the coming of Eliyahu the Prophet, but will come together with him. Every one of us among the entire Jewish People will be a messenger to inform himself, his family and his surroundings that "Behold, here (our righteous Moshiach) is coming," "He will point with his finger and say, thus." (Shabbos Toldos 5751; Hisvaaduyos 5751 vol. 1, p. 335) It is understood and obvious that in the final moments of exile there must be work on the mission of spreading Torah and the wellsprings [of Chassidus] outward, with full strength and the ultimate dedication. This is so even though we are in the final moments of exile and at any moment we will be redeemed. Moreover: Not only does the knowledge that we are in the final moments of exile not weaken (G-d forbid) the potency of our work to spread Torah and the wellsprings outward. On the contrary--it should inspire us with additional excitement and energy in all matters of our divine service, (including the anticipation of Redemption, prayers, requests etc. for Redemption) knowing that this activity will contribute to the completion of the mission. Not only this, but it is possible that this activity could be the final one, literally. (Shabbos Vayetzei, 7 Kislev 5748. Thousands of years have already passed since Yakov left Charan to return to his father's home. Yet we are still languishing in the darkness of exile, the long and bitter exile. "We have not yet been saved" and our righteous Moshiach has not yet come! For this, we have a lesson from the end of this week's Parsha: "The angels of Gd met him:" Even when a Jew finds himself in exile, outside the land of Israel, not only is Gd watching over him at every moment that no evil should befall him, G-d forbid. Even more so, G-d sends him--outside of Israel, in exile--the angels of the Land of Israel. This ensures that all his concerns will proceed in the most comfortable and complete manner, similar to the concept of the Land of Israel (Redemption). This is hinted at in the words "the land of Seir". In the third era--in the days that we await, Edom will be a possession. This is alluded to by the words "the field of Edom"--Edom will be plowed over like a field. This is the special advantage in emphasizing the matter of "He redeemed my soul in peace." It has the effect that the future Redemption will come in a manner of "redeemed in peace" specifically. At first glance, haven't the Jewish People been waiting for Moshiach for thousands of years? Surely they have already done a multitude of Mitzvos over the course of all the generations? However, since we are speaking about completing the mission of G-d, to "make a dwelling place for Him in the lowest world," G-d is not limited if the task will be completed through a small act or a big one, through the smallest of the small or the greatest of the great. It is entirely possible that a small act by a small child will be the "final hammer blow" that will bring the Redemption. (Shabbos Vayishlach, 14 Kislev 5748. There are those who will need this level of self-sacrifice-to leave behind in the Diaspora their beautiful homes and beautiful cars, etc.! (Shabbos Chanukah 5744; Hisvaaduyos 5744 vol. 2, p. 705) All the end-dates have already passed, and "the matter depends only on teshuvah." In other words, we must turn our face towards Moshiach. As my father-in-law, leader of our generation used to say, we need to know that Moshiach is coming, and we only need to ponder and contemplate this matter with sincerity and inwardness etc. When we have already put into effect the matter of turning our face towards Moshiach, we will have effected the matter of "Face to face G-d spoke with you." The verse says, "In the light of the face of the living king." In other words, through the light of the king's face, the entire matter of the darkness of exile will be nullified. As a matter of course, we will speedily merit the true and complete Redemption through our righteous Moshiach, immediately in our days and in our time. Since they will need a lot of money to rebuild the Holy Temple, the Alter Rebbe is collecting money for this purpose. (He was referring to the money that the Alter Rebbe collected for settlements in Eretz Yisrael.) From this story, we see that even a gentile recognizes and knows that a chassid is one who believes in Moshiach, and believes that he is coming soon. Naturally, [a chassid] prepares himself now for Moshiach's coming! This story happened over 150 years ago. How much more so now, when we are much closer to Moshiach's coming. Since this is so, let us continue to seek and demand the Redemption with stubbornness, as a "stiff-necked nation," in a complimentary sense. (Shabbos Vayeshev 5746; Hisvaaduyos 5746 vol. 2, p. 115) . Yehudah was busy marrying his wife. "And G-d was busy as well--creating the light of King Moshiach." (Bereishis Rabba, Parsha 85) The mitzvah that has a special power to bring the Redemption is the mitzvah of tzedakah--"Great is charity since it brings closer the Redemption." From this it is understood that we must increase even more…It may very well be that the only thing missing to bring the Redemption is just the giving of a few coins to charity! In the words of the Rambam, as a halachic ruling: "One who does one mitzvah can tip the scales of the entire world… and bring about for himself and for them salvation and rescue." Moshiach has not yet come, but we are awaiting his immediate arrival, even tonight. Therefore, we must look into the question of whether, when Moshiach comes, the halacha will immediately be according to the school of Shammai. In that case, we will have to light eight candles on the first night of Chanukah. May it be G-d's will that Moshiach will come immediately, and that will be our only worry--how to set up the oil and the candles, whether according to the school of Shammai (eight candles) or according to the school of Hillel (one candle.) As the Gemara says: "G-d wanted to make Chizkiya the Moshiach…the attribute of justice said before G-d: 'You made such great miracles for Chizkiya (he was saved from Sancheirev and was healed from his illness) and he did not sing praise before You. Will You then make him Moshiach?'" According to this it is understood regarding our situation, that publicizing the miracles that G-d does for us in our time is connected to the coming of the true and complete Redemption in actuality! From this we can take a general lesson: Since we have already passed all the matters, and the Redemption has still not come, it would be a very appropriate thing to put more effort into the matter of "publicizing the miracles." We must publicize to ourselves and others, in every place, the miracles that G-d does for us. We should do so out of recognition that this is connected to the true and complete Redemption!
