Message from the President and Chair of the Board of Directors
Dear Friends of Goodwill:
Imagine having a disability and feeling hopeless. Imagine being homeless with no source of income. Imagine being an ex-offender and not having the resources to provide
for yourself. What do you do? Where do you turn? How do you move on?
The most basic patterns are based on repetition. Thanks to your continued support, Goodwill Industries of South Texas has been providing hope, dignity, and
independence for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment since 1948. When you donate your unwanted, gently-used items to Goodwill, multiple times
during the year, you help someone in our community find hope. When you shop Goodwill often, you help someone in our community find dignity. When you hire
Goodwill for commercial services such as document destruction, custodial, or even grounds keeping, you help people in South Texas find independence. These are the
patterns – donating, shopping, and hiring Goodwill - that shape South Texas.
Together, in 2011 we continued to grow our donated goods program and earned $5.4 million, resulting in an 8% increase over 2010. Other highlights during the year
included the relocation of the Goodwill in Portland, where we premiered “the new Goodwill experience.” Goodwill in Portland is the first Goodwill Store to feature
fully bar coded merchandise and digital messaging. Because of its success, the new Goodwill experience will be integrated into future Goodwill stores. We also opened
five new, conveniently located Donation Stations throughout South Texas – increasing awareness for the Donate Movement, a social responsibility call to action that
focuses on the positive impact of donating to Goodwill. To maintain the highest level of public trust, Goodwill implemented a loss prevention program, which has proven
to be paramount in protecting Goodwill’s resources. Our document destruction division achieved certification with the National Association for Information
Destruction, Inc. (NAID), the international trade association for companies providing information destruction services. NAID certification means Goodwill surpassed
strict security guidelines for the document destruction. In addition, for the second consecutive year, Goodwill partnered with the CA$H Coalition to provide free tax
preparation services at three of our stores for individuals and families who made less than $50,000. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, almost
1,900 income tax returns were submitted, more than doubling the amount prepared in 2010, and equaled over $2.6 million in total tax refunds, providing a positive
economic impact. Our success in 2011 allowed us to serve almost 4,300 individuals throughout South Texas and we achieved a job placement rate of 81%. Overall, 2011
showcased Goodwill’s pattern of commitment and dedication to the people we serve.
We would not be able to fulfill our mission without your continuous support. By donating to Goodwill, shopping at Goodwill, and utilizing Goodwill’s commercial
services, multiple times, you help us provide job training and valuable work experience for the people we serve. Join us, as we continue the pattern to expand and help
South Texans with disabilities and other barriers to employment move closer to achieving their dreams.
