Dear subscribers and friends of the Slovenian Philharmonic, To all of you who have taken our programme booklet in your hands and looked over this year’s programme offer, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your trust. At the same time, I hope that you will attend our concerts with pleasure and interest. We all know that the approaching times, and, not least, the present situation, are anything but a good. In spite of the consequences of this and the increasingly difficult working conditions, rather than complaining we are making even more effort. In so doing, our motivation and goals remain unchanged – to achieve ever better results and quality growth. We believe that for all of the three subscription cycles we have again this year prepared programmes that ensure plentiful musical adventures. In addition to the Blue, Orange and Vocal Subscription Series, the cycles that we introduced in the previous season will also continue. These are concerts by the Slovenian Philharmonic String Quartet and the international concert cycle Pika – Točka – Taчкa in cooperation with the Zagreb and Belgrade Philharmonics. In endeavouring to ensure that the Slovenian Philharmonic continues to be the leading institution in its field in Slovenia, it is important that the atmosphere and desire for quality growth in our institution remain at the highest possible level. I would therefore also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our employees. It is my further pleasure to announce that in the 2012/13 season we will undertake two tours with internationally renowned artists. In November 2012, our orchestra and choir will perform in various European capitals with soprano Anna Netrebko, while in April 2013 our orchestra will perform in Germany with cellist Mischa Maisky. I believe that our collaboration with these artists is an extraordinary acknowledgement of the Slovenian Philharmonic, and a confirmation of our quality work and development. Finally, in my own name and in the name of our entire collective, I invite you to join us again in the coming season and experience a series of musical pleasures. With respect, Damjan Damjanovič, Director of the Slovenian Philharmonic We would like to thank Cankarjev dom for its support and its constructive and successful cooperation in the execution of our concerts. modri blue Orkester Slovenske filharmonije Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra Gallusova dvorana Cankarjev dom ob 19.30 Gallus Hall Cankarjev dom at 7.30 p.m. modri blue 1 13. in 14. september 2012 ob 19.30 13 and 14 September 2012 at 7.30 p.m. Orkester Slovenske filharmonije Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra dirigent/conductor Emmanuel Villaume Sabina Cvilak sopran/soprano W. V Mahlerjevi mojstrovini se bo pridružila naša priznana pevka Sabina Cvilak, ki je že pred leti »z mladostnim zvenom, številnimi briljantnimi odtenki, ki jemljejo dih, in v srce segajočo pevsko predstavo postala ljubljenka občinstva (Der Neue Merker)«, potem pa je še kritika New York Timesa navdušila s svojim »lesketajočim se sopranskim glasom in pristnim petjem brez sprenevedanja«. By way of introduction to the Blue Series, the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra will perform under the baton of its chief conductor Emmanuel Villaume. In Mahler’s masterpiece, the orchestra will be joined by Slovenia’s celebrated singer Sabina Cvilak, who a few years ago “with her youthful sound, numerous brilliant shades that take the breath away, and moving singing performance became a favourite of the audience (Der Neue Merker)”, and then enthused a critic of the New York Times with her “sparkling soprano voice and authentic singing without feigning”. (New Music Connoisseur)« Again this season, Matthias Pintscher will present himself in two roles, both as a conductor and a composer. His new composition Mar’eh, a concerto for violin and orchestra commissioned by the Lucerne Festival, the Frankfurt Opera and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, was premiered last year by Julia Fischer. We will hear a performance by the young American violinist and composer David Fulmer, “who plays like a man possessed: his stage presence, tone, bow control and finger technique are simply stunning (New Music Connoisseur).” V sodelovanju s 14. In the newspaper the Newcity Stage we could read that Emmanuel Villaume “achieved great orchestral transparency and colour while always maintaining momentum”. In the performance of a programme comprising works by two great masters of classicism, Emmanuel Villaume will be aided by our concertmaster violinist Miran Kolbl and pianist Tomaž Petrač, about whom it was recently written in the Delo newspaper that he “proved himself… with clarity built upon with a concertante stroke (the solo cadenza), and with a withdrawal into the transcendent tranquillity of the contemplative solo in the central movement”. The Zagreb Philharmonic, an orchestra with a 140-year tradition, will be led at this concert by its chief conductor Dmitrij Kitajenko. Although it was with Maestro Kitajenko that our regular guest Aleksander Rudin studied conducting, for the present concert he will return to his “musical roots”, taking on the role of soloist. In the words of a critic from the newspaper Stuttgarten Zeitung, the sound of his cello “floats through the whole musical surface with divine fluency, losing neither the beauty of the sound nor its intensity.” 5 P. V tej sezoni se bo pod taktirko Lorisa Voltolinija predstavil s priljubljenim Schumannovim Koncertom za klavir in orkester v a-molu. Just as he has to audiences throughout the world, in May last year Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire offered us “a gentle reminder that decorous piano playing and interpretive depth have an irresistible power all of their own (The New York Times).” Under the baton of Loris Voltolini, in the present season Nelson Freire will perform Schumann’s popular Piano Concerto in A Minor. A critic from the newspaper the Portland Press Herald wrote of American conductor Robert Moody that he “seems to have so identified with the music that the composer himself would have been delighted with its emotional effect.” Referring to Slovenia’s own celebrated pianist Dubravka Tomšič Srebotnjak, the newspaper the Boston Globe wrote: “Tomšič plays with enormous strength, beautiful articulation, a sense of style, and a relaxed command that says she has nothing left to prove.” Need we say more? Do danes pa je ta švicarski glasbenik – vrhunski solist, komorni glasbenik in prvi flavtist Berlinskih filharmonikov – svoje mojstrstvo še izpopolnil. “A lot more than just the melody lines: brilliant technique, perfect breath, but also the spiritual perception and penetration of the music... Emmanuel Pahud already belongs to the masters of his instrument,” wrote a critic from the Stuttgarter Nachrichten newspaper some years ago. Since then, this Swiss musician – a superb soloist and chamber musician, and the principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic – has taken his mastery to an even higher level. We can believe a writer from the BBC Music Magazine that “in terms of sheer colour, Lortie’s playing... harks back to the golden days of Cortot at his peak, surpassing Ashkenazy, Pollini, Perlemuter, even Backhaus…”. “Unlike some conductors, Robert Houlihan does not distract the attention of the audience from the orchestra and the music. He has a direct connection with the musicians and does not work in an aloof or distanced way,” wrote Sean Crudden. Figaroscoope described pianist David Bismuth as “a pianist of ‘high fashion’, who is capable of elegance and invention”. Within the framework of the guest appearance of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor Orchestra in our subscription series, the young harpist Anja Kožuh will also have an opportunity to present herself. ... Rachlin je izčistil orkestrske misli, izrazito dinamično razplastil posamezne formalne odseke in dal glasbi nujni polet.« Tokrat bo ponovno v dvojni vlogi predstavil svoje videnje skladb Mozarta in Mendelssohna. In September 2010, when the world famous virtuoso Julian Rachlin appeared on our stage as a conductor for the first time, critic Gregor Pompe wrote: “The great multitalented Julian Rachlin presented himself to us as a conductor, violist in violinist, all with a certain unabashed self-evidence… Rachlin refined the orchestral ideas, peeling away the layers of the individual formal sections with vivid dynamism and giving the music an essential zeal.” Again taking a dual role, Rachlin will this time present his vision of the compositions of Mozart and Mendelssohn. Umetniški vodja Ženevskega komornega orkestra in newyorškega Ansambla Suedama je po besedah kritika New York Timesa, »izjemen glasbenik, ki ima dar, da občinstvo izziva, poučuje in navdušuje.« “Sleek, first-rate execution... a strange and fascinating interpreter of Mozart’s music,” Israeli conductor and pianist David Greilsammer has enthused audiences and critics throughout the world. Po besedah Miše Majskega se »mora glasba dotakniti src in skladbe Benjamina Jusupova imajo prav ta učinek. Zato izvajam njegov Koncert kar se da pogosto!« “As soon as Maisky played the first note, it was clear that his generous gestures are completely at the service of an interpretation that seeks to lay open the innermost soul of the music. Maisky played with sharpness and a biting humour.” This is how a writer from the daily newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt experienced the playing of the great cellist. After a performance of Brahms’s Double Concerto by Karen Gomyo and Christian Poltera, critic Paul Hyde wrote: “Gomyo and Poltera, two young and accomplished musicians with international careers, were wonderfully sympathetic co-soloists, with a tremendous musical rapport. Their performance was one of clarity, vigour and elegance. After Keri-Lynn Wilson’s debut in the Blue Subscription Series in November 2010, we could read in the Dnevnik newspaper: “Wilson tuned her ear with precision and prepared the Philharmonic for sensitive music making, in which feeling for detail, for that which is concealed, for tiny shifts, had priority over the rumbling of heavy artillery,” while the Boston Globe described pianist Jeremy Denk as “the pyrogenic force in every piece he played. He commands a huge range of colours and dynamics… from the ghostly haze in the opening… to the heroic assertion of the finale. Kritik časopisa The Washington Post pa je pohvalil način, kako se »pianist Burkhard Schaeffer ujema s pevcem v razpoloženju in barvi, hkrati pa se izjemno občutljivo odziva na glasbo.« The inclusion of recitals in the Vocal Subscription Series has become an established practice. At the present concert, we will hear the German baritone Patrick Pobeschin, who, as we can read on the Operapoint.com website, “sings powerfully and with a mellow timbre”. A critic for the Washington Post praised the way “pianist Burkhard Schaeffer complements the mood and colour of the singer, while at the same time responding to the music with extraordinary sensitivity.” 3 18. november 2012 ob 19.00 18 November 2012 at 7.00 p.m. Komorni zbor AVE/AVE Chamber Choir dirigentka/conductor Jerica Gregorc Bukovec akordeon/accordion Primož Kranjc M. Izjemen zborovski večer.« Many critics write of the versatility and excellence of the AVE Chamber Choir, such as a writer from the newspaper Primorske novice: “The AVE Chamber Choir sang the Renaissance works with a great deal of vocal concentration and intimacy, they executed Poulenc’s Mass with broad pastel shades, presented Lojze Lebič’s Mosaics with precise sonic finesse, and adorned the arrangements of Slovenian folk songs by the same composer with new national attire. An extraordinary choral evening.” “Martina Batič selected very sensible repertoire, which, at least in the opinion of the present writer, engaged with questions of existence and seeking a path from the darkness in which humanity has found itself. An entirely appropriate programme for Advent! Thus Batič more than successfully countered the cheap (Christmas) programmes of many similar institutions. What is more, she successfully established an inner connection between the compositions, both in terms of content and in terms of the similarity of the composers’ languages…” wrote Aljoša Škorja in Pogledi. Robert Sund Robert Sund poje, igra, aranžira, sklada, poučuje in dirigira. Ta njegova glasbena vsestranskost mu zagotavlja ugled na švedski in mednarodni glasbeni sceni. Robert Sund sings, plays, arranges, composes, teaches and conducts. His musical versatility has ensured his reputation in the Swedish and international music scene. In 1993, he was named the Swedish conductor of the year. He succeeded the legendary Eric Ercison as the conductor of the renowned male choir Orphei Drängar and, in addition to his own diverse musical activities, has been the soul of this unsurpassed vocal ensemble for the last 20 years. In letters of support dedicated to the project by state presidents and prime ministers, ministers of culture, mayors of capital cities and numerous well-known figures in public life (including the great maestro Zubin Mehta), certain phrases came up again and again: “retaining identity, cooperation between countries, building bridges, progress, overcoming and forgetting disagreements from the past, etc.” As the renowned Croatian music writter Branimir Pofuk stated, “this is yet another proof that musicians can rebuild old bridges and establish new ones, they can be an example to politicians…”. The title of the cycle Pika – Točka – Taчкa refers to the successful continuation of the established concert stories of the three orchestras… The five concerts of the Slovenian part of the project will be held in the Marjan Kozina Hall of the Slovenian Philharmonic: 7 December 2012 16 January 2013 24 January 2013 27 May 2013 13 June 2013 Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra conductor winner of the Malko Competition Marija Kuhar Šoša soprano Ipča Ramanović baritone Programme: Mozart, Donizetti, Bellini Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Simon Krečič Eva Nina Kozmus flute Programme: Merkù, Mozart, Tchaikovsky (repeat performances: 17 January in Zagreb and 18 January in Belgrade) Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Vladimir Kulenović Jaka Stadler cello Programme: Sibelius, Elgar Belgrade Philharmonic conductor Aleksandar Rahbari Simon Trpčeski piano Programme: Gostuški, Rahmaninov, Rimski-Korsakov Zagreb Philharmonic conductor Perry So Ning Feng violin Programme: Bruch, Brahms Tickets will be available in the week prior to each concert at the Slovenian Philharmonic box office, each working day from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm, as well as one hour before the concert.
