SENTRY Sample Coolers • Water • Steam • Process Liquid • Gas Largest Selection Of Models Offered By Any Manufacturer SeventyFive Years of Heat Transfer World Leader in Sample Coolers Heavy Duty: Wide Variety of Materials: Cools down hot water, steam or process samples for either continuous chemical analysis or grab samples. All gaskets are asbestos free. Ratings to 1000°F at 5000 psi (540°C at 350 bar). Coil is a single continuous tube – no welded joints. Shell, head and tube available in many materials, including Stainless Steel, Inconel, Cupronickel, Hastelloy and Titanium. High Efficiency: Achieves extremely close temperature approach. Effective baffling on the shell side produces full counterflow with low cooling water flow and minimum vibration and scaling. Compact Design: Can be mounted in cooling water piping without using brackets or special supports. Sentry offers a wide variety of sample coolers with a choice of heat transfer area, materials of construction and shell design. Standard sample tube sizes are: • 1/4” diameter in lengths of 19 and 38 feet (5.8 and 11.6 meters) • 3/8” diameter in lengths of 19, 38 and 50 feet (5.8, 11.6 and 15.2 meters) • 1/2” diameter in a length of 20 feet (6 meters) The standard tube material is 316 stainless steel. Optional materials are available for handling fluids which are not compatible with stainless steel. Inconel 625 is used when chlorides are present in the cooling water or sample. Exotic alloys such as Hastelloy, Titanium and Monel are available for severe service applications. The standard shell 2 Removable Shell: Shell can be easily removed for inspection and/or cleaning without disconnecting sample lines. Low Cost: Very high heat transfer surface area per unit of cost. Code Stamp: Many models available with ASME Section VIII Stamp, TUV or Canadian Registration. material is 304 stainless steel with cupronickel as an option. The TF series is the most commonly used shell configuration for applications in power plants and the petrochem industry. It is the most compact of the high pressure models and has cooling water connections top and bottom to facilitate piping into a central panel. The FLF series provides larger heat transfer capacity, and all four connections are on the top so that the shell can be removed without breaking any connections. The WSW model has an all-welded shell with a 1/2” tube. It is commonly used in process sampling or gases and more viscous fluids. The TRB4222 is used for sampling water from heating and industrial boilers. Selection: To select a cooler: 1. Consult the performance charts and choose a model which will handle the heat load requirements. Remember that the cooler may become fouled over time and performance will be diminished. 2. Then go to the mechanical specifications to select a model with suitable materials and construction. Stainless steel is normally the least expensive construction and most stainless models can be shipped from stock. Performance charts for water samples are shown on page 7. Steam performance charts are on the rear cover. For fluids other than these, consult the factory. The performance data assumes a fouling factor of 0.001, and does not include the temperature rise which can occur when compressed water is depressurized (see correction curve page seven). The rate of fouling will vary with cooling water quality. Therefore, the actual cooler performance may vary at other than assumed conditions. Analyzer Samples: If the sample is to be routed to an analyzer, consult the analyzer manufacturer’s literature for desirable sample temperature and maximum limits on temperature. Process Samples: In handling process samples, subcooling can sometimes be a problem. Sentry sample coolers are extremely efficient and it may not be possible to control the sample outlet temperature by merely throttling the cooling water. At very low flow rates, the cooling water may boil and cause vibration in the cooler coil. This can lead to a mechanical failure of the coil and should be avoided. If in doubt on this consideration, consult the factory for recommendations. Steam Samples: Steam performance data are for saturated steam. Superheat is quickly dissipated in a short run of sample line and can be safely ignored. Mechanical specifications, including materials of construction and ratings are given on pages 4, 5 and 6. For steam samples of less than 600 psi (41 bar) pressure, sample flow may be limited by pressure loss. Consult Sentry for predicted maximum flows with low pressure steam. EXAMPLE: A sample of boiler water at 2400 psi and 600ºF is to be cooled to less than 93ºF using 90ºF cooling water. Desired sample flow rate is 1000 cc/min. For high pressure steam samples, use a cooler with at least 2.4 ft2 (0.22 m2) of heat transfer surface. 1. From the chart on page 7, note that the proper cooler is cooler type 2. Note: with a sample pressure of 2400 psi, the temperature rise due to pressure reduction downstream of the cooler is approximately 6ºF as seen on the chart on page 7. 2. On page 4, note that the TLF is available with either stainless steel or inconel tubing. Since stainless steel is acceptable for boiler water, select the model TLF-4225. If the cooling water was high in chlorides, a better selection would be the Model TLF-44B5. Secondary Cooling: If secondary cooling (refrigerated water) is to be used, the primary cooler should be large enough to cool the sample to within 20ºF (9ºC) of the primary cooling water temperature. This minimizes the load on the refrigeration system. Secondary coolers should provide an approach temperature of no greater than 1ºF (0.5ºC). On most models, the shell can be easily removed for inspection and/or cleaning without disconnecting sample lines The TF series is the most commonly used shell configuration for applications in power plants and the petrochem industry. 3 TF Series • Most compact and lowest priced high pressure coolers • Top and bottom cooling water connections for easy panel piping • Single gasket for maximum leak tight integrity • New Installation Kits available for process side connection to sample tubing.
