In every community, especially those with over

Breakthrough, is one such step in the right direction.

Kapital za

Winners’
Equity
Zadnje čase se je odnos podjetnikov in države do panoge tveganega kapitala
In recent years, the attitudes of entrepreneurs and the state towards the venture
capital industry have significantly improved. As a result, some Slovenian
podjetij, ki so zrasla prav z investicijami tveganega kapitala.
companies funded by venture capital have found success on global markets.
podjetnikov v zvezi z njihovim podjetjem.
However, misconceptions exist among the general public concerning venture
capital and what venture capital funds expect from entrepreneurs. The view
that we invest in entrepreneurial projects and that we require detailed business
plans in order to evaluate such projects is a striking misconception. We only
invest in convincing entrepreneurial teams which in our opinion show enough
commitment and focus in their projects. We are also on the lookout for project
teams which we believe are ultimately capable of realising their entrepreneurial
ideas. Of course, the product itself is important. It must compete on a market
that is expected to grow rapidly in the near future. In addition, the product must
not be easily replicated and must generate above-average mark-ups, as these
significantly impact the value of the company. It is certainly a plus if the product
can be patent protected, but this is not always a must, especially in the case of
computer software. In deciding to invest, the expectations of the entrepreneurs
concerning their company are also important. If they do not expect to sell the
company at a certain stage, they are most certainly a less interesting investment
since any investor would thus have to find a buyer for its share alone.
In kateri dejavniki nas najbolj odvrnejo od investicije? Spet so na prvem
mestu ljudje in njihovi značaji.
Which factors make an investment less appealing? People and their characters
are most important. We are unlikely to invest if there is no immediate “chemistry”
between us as the investor and the team. It is essential for the entrepreneur to
truly prepare him or herself for the pitch and to prepare for any questions from
the investor. Past unprofessionalism does not instil investor confidence. We also
see it as a negative if the entrepreneur is involved in more than one project at a
time. The investor is also less likely to invest in a company in a market that is not
expected to grow rapidly or a company with a very limited local market.
to pripravljeni odpovedati marsičemu.
Venture capital is winners’ capital, reserved for the one or two per cent of
companies that approach us that we actually invest in, as well as those who
actually aim and do everything to become global winners, and are prepared to
accept certain sacrifices in order to achieve their goal.

direktor podjetja Abelium d.o.o.,
prejemnik posebnega priznanja za
najboljšo storitveno inovacijo za
raziskave in razvoj za inovacijo iOliva.
Managing Director of Abelium d.o.o. recipient of the special award for the best
service innovation relating to research
and development innovations.
Ko smo s partnerji ustanavljali Abelium, smo vedeli,
novih storitev in njihovo trženje usmeriti veliko
energije in dela. Ko so prišli prvi rezultati in
In ko
dobiš tovrstne odzive, se tvoja odrekanja in ves trud
osmislijo.
Kaj štejete med svoje največje poslovne in kaj
in raziskovalno okolje v Sloveniji in Evropi; Abelium
What motivated you and prevented you from
giving up in business?
When my partners and I founded Abelium, we knew
that we had a tough road ahead as we had established
the company in times of economic turmoil. As a
result we invested a lot of energy and resources in
researching, developing and marketing new services.
We knew we were on the right track when the first
results were visible and we received the first awards,
when we successfully recruited top-class members
of staff and when we made our breakthrough on
foreign markets. When success comes, all the efforts
and sacrifices make sense.
What do you consider your greatest business and
personal success?
Abelium’s 13 members of staff, who have ensured
the company’s presence on the market for the
past four years. Being involved in the academic
and research environment in Slovenia and Europe.
Abelium is the only company involved in the
prestigious European GReGAS project. My family
is without a doubt my greatest personal success.
Members of my family motivate me and give me
energy to face new business challenges.

company concluded an exclusive contract
with the media company Pro Plus d.o.o.
for monitoring the 2012 presidential

in poslu vedno postavljam najvišje cilje. In zakaj sem
izbral v poslu pot ustvarjalnosti in inovativnosti?
Gotovo ne zato, ker je to najlažja pot. Pa ta moj
veliki ego nima prav nič z mojim egoizmom, po
naravi nisem egoist. Prej nasprotno. Glavni sem
za področja, kjer se počutim kompetentnega, na
drugih področjih so glavni moji sodelavci.
Kaj štejete med svoje največje poslovne in kaj
med osebne uspehe?
Da smo ustvarili vrsto inovativnih, svetovno
primerljivih rešitev, da nas imajo naročniki za
strokovne in korektne partnerje, da smo sodelavcem
omogočili odlične delovne razmere in možnosti
What motivated you and prevented you from
giving up in business?
Without a doubt my ego, which constantly motivates
me to set higher and higher goals in both my personal
and business lives. But why did I choose to follow
the path of creativity and innovation in business?
Certainly not because it is the easiest. Furthermore,
having an ego has nothing to do with being an
egoist, which I am not – I am exactly the opposite.
I am responsible only for areas where I have the
appropriate competencies, while my colleagues are
responsible for other areas.
What do you consider your greatest business and
personal success?
Having created a series of innovative and global
solutions. Being recognised as a professional and
fair business partner by our clients. Being able to
offer our employees excellent working conditions
and opportunities for their personal development.
I consider my role as an important, even crucial
factor in this as my own personal victory.

V konzorciju Start:up Slovenija se zavedamo pomena spodbujanja mladih
Zato mlade s poslovnimi
idejami spodbujamo z dvema ključnima programoma, Start:up Geek House
in ITIME+.
pridobivanju podjetniških znanj in vzpostavitvi mreže stikov.
All members of the Start:up Slovenia consortium are aware of the importance
of encouraging young people to develop their ambitions, talents and
entrepreneurial spirit both in terms of their own future and the future of
Slovenia. As a result, we offer two key programmes aimed at encouraging young
people to pursue their business ideas: Start:up Geek House and ITIME+. The aim
of both programmes is to motivate young people, encourage entrepreneurship
and creativity, as well as to help them develop their ideas, gain experience in
enterprise and establish their own network of contacts.
Nekaj več o obeh programih
ITIME+ je pospeševalnik idej, namenjen razvoju in komercializaciji rešitev
mladih talentov, ki delujejo v panogah TIME (telekomunikacija, internet, mediji
in zabava). Cilj intenzivnega šestmesečnega programa je mladim talentom
zagotoviti mentorstvo, svetovanje, infrastrukturo, IKT-storitve in denarna
sredstva za izdelavo prototipa oziroma minimalno sprejemljivega proizvoda
(angl. MVP) ter ustanovitev start-up podjetja. Zmagovalni start-up poleg
denarne nagrade dobi še priložnost osebne predstavitve pred skladi tveganega
kapitala.
Izbrani finalisti ITIME+ so na www.itime.si
Start:up Geek House (SGH) je prostor (angl. co-workingspace), namenjen
izključno ambicioznim, drznim, malo norim in podjetnim talentom z znanjem
z visoko dodano vrednostjo, ki snujejo nov podjetniški podvig. Delovno mesto
V sklopu nabora nagrad
programa iTime+ finalisti pridobijo še možnost brezplačne uporabe delovnih
mest v Start:up GeekHouseu.

Further information on both programmes
ITIME+ is an idea accelerator aimed at developing and commercialising solutions
developed by young talents active in TIME industries (Telecommunications,
Internet, Media and Entertainment). The aim of this intensive six-month
programme is to provide mentoring, counselling, infrastructure, ICT services and
funding to young talents, allowing them to design their prototype and/or MVP
and establish their own start-up company. In addition to a cash prize, the winning
start-up company will have the opportunity to pitch its idea to venture capitalists.
Finalists of the ITIME+ contest can be viewed at www.itime.si
Start:up Geek House (SGH) is a co-working space intended exclusively for
ambitious, bold, slightly wild and passionate, as well as enterprising and highlyknowledgeable talents working on their new enterprise. Any young person
working on their own prototype, minimum viable product (MVP) or business plan,
who is looking for his or her first customer or has already begun operations but
does not need his or her own office can hire a desk in shared office facilities of
the Start:up Geek House at minimum cost. In addition to a furnished workstation,
members can take part in technology and enterprise workshops mainly dealing
with topics of lean and agile entrepreneurship and rapid prototyping. Finalists of

Pogovor z Matejem
Zalarjem, direktorjem
podjetja Visionect
Pot do
milijonske
investicije
evrov. Z Matejem Zalarjem iz podjetja Visionect
smo se pogovarjali o izkušnjah pri pridobivanju
tega milijonskega vložka za razvoj lastnih tehnologij
elektronskega papirja in dlančnikov na dotik.
Avgusta 2012 ste podpisali investicijo s skladom
Nam zaupate, kako
je vam uspelo pridobiti investicijo?
Za pridobitev investicije sklada tveganega kapitala
smo se morali zelo potruditi in vložiti veliko dela.
Sliši se vsekakor sanjsko in enostavno, vendar
so pogovori s skladom potekali dobro leto dni.
tveganega kapitala.

arhiv Visionect
Pripravljeno
dokumentacijo
smo
družbo STH Ventures smo se najprej sestali, naredili
predstavitev, predstavili svojo dejavnost, nato pa
smo jih vsakih 14 dni obveščali o svojem delovanju.
prikazovali svoj napredek.
Investitor
take investicije že izvedel. Hkrati smo ugotovili,
so zelo kredibilni, posedujejo zelo veliko znanja,
in strank. Vsekakor nam tudi zdaj, ko se pogovarjamo
s strankami in ko imamo velika naročila, pomagajo s
In s
pridobitvi tveganega kapitala in kako ste ga
premagali?
premagovanju teh ovir in razumevanja pravniškega
jezika smo prosili za številna mnenja. Seveda ima
vsak svetovalec lastno mnenje in tolmačenje,
pomen. Poleg raznih svetovalcev smo tudi sami
vložili veliko časa, da smo prebrali številne knjige
s področja prava in tveganega kapitala, da smo
se lahko vsaj dostojno pogajali o pogodbi. O sami
pogodbi smo se pogovarjali in dogovarjali aktivno
vsaj štiri mesece, nekaj ur na dan.
Lahko podate tri nasvete podjetnikom, ki želijo
pridobiti investicijo sklada tveganega?
Podjetniki velikokrat naredimo napako, da gremo
prehitro do investitorja.
Pred investitorja moraš priti z izdelano poslovno
idejo, proizvodom in že s prvimi strankami.

naravnan.
Kdo je vaš vzornik oziroma kdo vaš največji navdih?

samozadosten. Seveda, če je to tvoj cilj, če pa se
želiš hitro širiti in investirati v nadaljnji razvoj, potem
nujno potrebuješ svežo investicijo. Tvegani kapital ti
podjetnika pridejo do konkurence, saj investitorji
nikoli ne podpišejo zaveze k nerazkrivanju podatkov.

The Way to a
Million-Euro
Investment
In August 2012 you received an investment from
STH Ventures, a venture capital fund in which the
state has a nearly 50% stake. They invested 1.5
million euros in exchange for 30% of the company.
In the current economic circumstances, fresh
capital appears elusive. Could you share with us
how you succeeded in securing their investment?
Acquiring this investment proved very difficult and
labour intensive. Although it sounds very simple
to the fund. Kristjan Pečanac helped us with this
documentation as he has personal experience in
obtaining venture capital. He advised us on how to
approach the venture capital fund in practical terms.
We sent the documentation to a few venture capital
funds, and at the same time obtained the first major
clients and orders for our handheld solutions. It was
make a batch without capital with which to set up
production. This applies especially to software, which
is only economically viable in large quantities. Any
capital invested was therefore to be used to establish
production and sales.
Please give three pieces of advice for
entrepreneurs looking for venture capital.
Entrepreneurs often make the mistake of approaching
an investor too soon. No investment is secured solely
on the basis of the business idea. Each year, an
investor will receive 200 proposals, most of which
are still at the idea stage. You should only seek an
investment with a complete business idea, finished
product and your first clients. Most entrepreneurs
believe that the first clients make them self-sufficient.
This may be sufficient for some. However, if you want
to grow rapidly and invest into further development,
you need fresh capital. Venture capital allows the
company to grow rapidly. My advice would therefore
be: do not approach investors too soon, make sure you
have your first clients and be persistent. Furthermore,
select your venture capital fund carefully, choosing
one that invests in the industry you are active in.
This is very important at the time of exiting the
investment, as the fund may sell its stake to someone
in its own portfolio. The entrepreneur should do his
or her homework and check whether the fund or
investor has already invested in a competitor. If such
an investment has already been made, your ideas
may find their way to your competition, as investors
are never willing to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Who Matej Zalar is
What motivates you to stay in business and not give up?
The freedom and creativity I am able to express in business and
would be unable to express in other fields. Our highly motivated
and positive team is also a source of motivation.
Who is your role model, and who gives you most inspiration?
Elon Musk, entrepreneur and inventor, known as the founder of
SpaceX and cofounder of Tesla Motors and PayPal.
Which app do you most often use on your tablet computer?
Pulse Reader as it allows me to quickly scan websites and blogs I
find most interesting.
My life as an entrepreneur is…
An adventure!
at this point that we realised we were prepared for
a venture capital investment. Venture capital funds
enter a company only when the company has a
proven market and clients or customers for its
solution or product, as no investor will invest solely
on the basis of a business idea. We first met with
STH Ventures, presented our company and activity
to them, and then continued to keep them informed
of our operations every fortnight. We were able to
demonstrate progress in developing and selling our
products regardless of the capital investment needed.
We had several meetings over the year where we
demonstrated our continued progress. We had to
prove receipt of orders, as well as our ability to fulfil
all orders. We also had to prove our need for capital to
establish production in case of large orders. It’s hard
to say which comes first: while the investor wants
to see firm orders and products, the company can’t

Že šesto leto izbiramo nacionalno start:up podjetje leta.
Our search for Slovenia’s start:up company of the year, this year in its sixth year
Statistics show that Slovenia has an abundance of beauty pageants – for miss/
mister of the beach, village, town, state, of the EU, Earth, the Universe... The list
goes on. This at least shows that Slovenia has an abundance of beautiful women
and handsome men. However, this is (probably) not enough to ensure the nation’s
future or the economic prosperity of the state.
Richard St. John je napisal svetovno uspešnico z naslovom Stupid, ugly,
unlucky and rich, v kateri podrobno predstavi ugotovitve analize več kot
500 najuspešnejših zemljanov. Analiza je pokazala, da visoka inteligenca,
lepota in sreča le redko pomembno prispevajo k poslovnemu uspehu.
lastnosti: (1) strast do dela, (2) trdo in pametno delo, (3) lasersko
natančna osredotočenost, (4) nenehno stopanje izven območja udobja,
(5) generiranje briljantnih idej, (6) stalno izpopolnjevanje, (7) ustvarjanje
In the international bestseller Stupid, ugly, unlucky and rich, Richard St. John
presents, in detail, the findings of his analysis of over 500 of the most successful
people on Earth. The analysis shows that intelligence, beauty and luck only
rarely contribute to success in business. However, most successful people (and
this applies also to enterprise) share the following eight personality traits: (1) a
passion for their work, (2) determination to working hard and smart, (3)
laser-like precision and focus, (4) constantly stepping outside their comfort
zone, (5) generating brilliant ideas, (6) continual training and education,
(7) generating high added value and, most importantly, (8) persistence.
Slovenija.
The good news is that Slovenia also boasts a national competition for potential
entrepreneurs. You have surely heard about the competition for the best startup company, appropriately called “Start-up of the Year”, which is organised as
part of the Start:up Slovenia initiative. The winner receives media promotion,
attractive prizes and important recognition and motivation to make his or her
entrepreneurial vision a reality. The awards ceremony is held as part of the largest
conference for start-up companies, namely Podim, which this year will take place
on 15 and 16 May.
Izbor Start:up leta poleg samega izbora najboljšega start-up podjetja zajema tudi
serijo podjetniških delavnic po Sloveniji in tesno navezavo s programom
P2 Slovenskega podjetniškega sklada, ki omogoča pridobitev subvencije v
višini 70.000 evrov.
Glavni razlogi za sodelovanje v izboru Start:up leta:
• izobraževalne delavnice
• pridobitev točk za subvencijo P2
• medijska odmevnost
• privlačne nagrade
Gradite perspektivno start-up podjetje? Sodelujte v izboru.
Prijave sprejemamo do 15. marca na www.startup.si.
In addition to the selection of the best start-up company, the Start:up of the Year
programme also encompasses enterprise workshops all over Slovenia and
close collaboration with Programme P2 of the Slovenian Enterprise Fund,
which offers entrants grants of up to 70,000 euros.
Four main reasons to take part in the Start:up of the Year competition:
• Educational workshops
• Media coverage
• Attractive prizes
• Counts towards the P2 grant scheme
Are you building a perspective start-up entity? Join the competition.
Entries must be received by 15 March at www.startup.si.

Cosylab d. d. is a global market leader that provides
system integration services for control systems used in
nuclear accelerators and similar large physical devices.
Large physical laboratories all over the world are our main
clients. We established a company in the USA and a branch
office in Japan with the aim of performing services as a systems
integrator effectively, as this requires physical proximity to our clients. Our
vseh ključnih azijskih državah, kot so Japonska, Koreja in Kitajska.
goal is to have local representatives in the USA and all key Asian countries,
including Japan, Korea and China.
Naj v pričujočem prispevku navedem nekaj izkušenj in napotkov za delo z
ameriškimi in japonskimi sodelavci. Ustanavljanje podjetja v ZDA ni tako
zahtevno kot pridobivanje vize za zaposlitev. Ti postopki so namreč zelo
Kombinacija znanja
jezik in seveda pozna kulturo.
njihove zgodovine in pozna kateri običaj.
In this article we will discuss our experience and give advice with regards to
doing business in the USA and Japan. Establishing a company in the USA is fairly
simple, while acquiring green cards for employees is much more demanding.
Since the procedures for obtaining a green card are very long and expensive,
we recommend applying at least six months in advance. It may help if you find
a Slovenian company operating in the USA with experience in obtaining green
cards for its employees. They can also put you in contact with an attorney in the
USA. A Slovenian citizen must be employed by the newly established company
in the USA.
We established business contacts with Japan and subsequently registered a branch
office there through the Vulcanos student exchange programme. As a result of
our involvement in the exchange programme, two students from Japan took
internships with our company. They are now employed in our branch in Japan.
We also employed an eminent professor, as it is extremely important for a person
of repute and experience to help any newcomer make its market breakthrough
and conduct negotiations in Japan. The combination of knowledge of our young
and more experienced employees and their teamwork is the basis upon which or
branch in Japan operates. All employees can independently transfer and adapt
our guidelines and strategic goals to the Japanese market.
We would like to share the following advice for doing business in Japan. All
negotiations will be easier if you employ someone who speaks Japanese fluently
and knows the culture. The Japanese people appreciate when the other party is
familiar with Japanese history or customs. This can also be a great advantage
in business. It is common knowledge that Japanese people often pause for quiet
reflection. They are in no hurry and are not discomforted by silence. Silence is part
of their negotiations and is not used to mislead the other party.

parka zaposlujejo okoli 1.000 zaposlenih in tako

Kaj pričakujete od dogovora o medsebojnem

Podpis dogovora o sodelovanju je jasen znak naše
zavezanosti k trajnemu nadaljevanju čezmejnega
sodelovanja in spodbujanja inovacij na Koroškem
in v Sloveniji. Tako bomo slovenskim podjetjem
pomagali pri prodoru na avstrijski trg. In obratno.

been partners for many years now. As the

regions, they both seek synergies in developing
services for entrepreneurs. Mojca Cvirn discussed
the challenges facing with its Managing Director,
Maria Mack.
What are the most important services
accelerating companies’ growth? Can you share
any success stories with us?
Founders and start-ups with innovative business
ideas can find full support for sustainable business
development at the “build!” Business Incubator.
Lakeside Labs offers specific services in the field of ICT,
particularly in the field of self-organising networked
systems, and acts as a link between the university
and industry. We see every single successful company
foundation as a success story and we are happy
when new established companies remain at Lakeside
Park. In addition we have several companies that
have become well established on the market after
their supported foundation period. At the moment,
companies at Lakeside Park employ around 1,000
staff and have therefore an important function of
giving these people a good incentive to stay in the
region.

What are your expectations from the softlanding agreement with Ljubljana Technology
Park?
The signing of the cooperation agreement is a clear
signal of our determination to sustainably continue
the chosen path of cross-border cooperation and
to promote innovation in the region of Carinthia
and Slovenia. We will help Slovenian companies to
penetrate the Austrian market. And vice versa.
What are your plans for the future?
Approximately 26,000 sqm of office space has been
built by 2010. Well over 50 companies with more than
1,000 employees are now located at Lakeside Park.
Our plan is to double the office space within the next
few years in order to attract innovative companies
to settle down at Lakeside Park and offer a further
1,000 jobs in the region. We also aim to strengthen
our cooperation with Ljubljana Technology Park and
successfully develop further joint projects.
