Gimnazija Šiška - Ljubljana
Our school is located in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, in its geographical centre, and
has special classes for perspective sportsmen/sportswomen. Its origin goes back to 1990,
when first sport class was founded in order to give the students involved in sports the
possibility of effectively merging their educational and training demands. Our sportsmen
place high for medals at national, European and World championships; some even
competed at the Olympic Games.
Now more than 50% of our students attend so called sport classes, other are involved in
general classes. In sport classes, there is a lot of cooperation with the national sport
associations, with the aim to achieve the best sport results and provide good general
education. This is the reason why students from all parts of the country enrol in it. Classes
with football players are organised as college classes (we are unique in Slovenia) – students
live in a school dormitory and train under the supervision of the NZS (the National
Football Association) although they are members of different clubs from all over Slovenia.
The school provides a relaxing atmosphere, where students feel more at ease when striving
with their piles of tests. Furthermore, GLŠ offers a wide variety of extra curriculum
activities, such as drama classes, archery, voluntary work, etc. Additionally, the
competition “NAJ razred”, i.e. The BEST class, is held every year, where classes compete
against each other in a vast range of intellectual performances. The students also publish
their publications, run the school radio, take initiative in humanitarian and environmental
actions and are also dynamic in the field of sports, for which GLŠ was awarded a special
prize. Every year the students score above the Slovene average in “matura”, the national
examination, and perform excellently on various national competitions.

For the students living far from school, GLŠ provides a hospitable replacement for home
in the students’ dorm.
Our school also finds it very important to promote cooperation and mobility in the field
of education. With the help of mobility we intend to draw students’ attention to other
countries, in a broader sense than school lessons do. We would like to give them a chance
to meet their peers from abroad, to get to know and experience multicultural differences
and similarities. That is the way we can fight against racism and chauvinism (which
students experience daily, even in sport events). We also believe, that the role of an open
and distance learning is very important in the whole-life learning process, especially in
the fields of:
improving language skills,
exchanging information,
connecting different subjects,
increasing interest for learning,
using ICT,
increasing the students’ view by enlarging social empathy while socializing with young
people from other countries,
and last but not least, understanding different cultures and living within them,
realising that European countries are based on common cultural and scientific
background.
Our school considers European cooperation an important part of the curriculum
because this kind of experience results in the quality of the educational process, in higher
motivation and self valuation of the participating students.
