Create Your Lapbook
The base or canvas of a lapbook is created by taking a file folder and
folding the two ends towards the middle crease, creating a shutter fold
with three panels.

Create minibooks on a certain theme, skill or unit and paste inside
the lapbook.
Now the lapbook is completed and the student has a portfolio keepsake
of what they have learned and a set of interactive minibooks and games
for continuous learning in the home or classroom.

Is a file folder necessary to hold the minibooks?
No, of course not. Minibooks can be pasted onto pages of a
spiral notebook. This is called notebooking. In my classroom, we
use notebooking to paste all of our science unit minibooks in one
place.
Also, most of the activities can be done individually. It does
not necessarily have to be compiled all together in one place.
file
What color paper is best to use for printing out the minibooks?
Sa
mp
le
Colored paper stands out very nicely if that is available.
However, as a classroom teacher, I use white paper so my
students can use markers and crayons to create lapbooks that are
individualized and not “cookie-cutter.” This is also why I have
created the lapbooks in only black and white (not to mention it
would be insane to print out 35 copies of everything on a color
printer). And you will be amazed at the creativity of your students
when it comes to producing a lapbook that is uniquely theirs.
My only suggestion for printing with colored paper would be
when creating the matching cards. Printing out one group
(pictures or words) in a different color besides white will ensure
that students pick one picture and one word and not two
pictures or two words. However, if colored paper is not on hand,
students can mark one group of cards on the back with a
highlighter to distinguish between the two different groups. You
may also want to consider printing in card stock so the image or
print will not show through the other side.
5
What is the copyright on this lapbook?
The copyright for FlapJack Lapbooks states that copies should
only be made for your immediate family (homeschoolers) or for
all students on your roster (classroom teachers). Obviously there
are no copyright police out there, but following the above
copyright would be greatly appreciated!
I am a classroom teacher with a large number of students. How
do I obtain enough file folders?
Sa
mp
le
file
Obvious suggestions are sending a memo to parents and the
faculty at your school. Encourage them to send in used file folders
since students can cover any markings with construction paper. If
tabs have writing on them, they can be cut off directly.
Glue sticks are another donation to consider asking for since
they will run out quickly. When it comes to lapbooking, you can
never have enough glue sticks!
This is a lot of cutting! I’m not sure my students have the fine
motor skills needed yet for lapbooking.
This is a valid point! Although lapbooking is great for
developing fine motor skills, sometimes the cutting and pasting
can be overwhelming and nearly impossible in the early grades.
If you have a parent volunteer, this would be a great task to
give him/her. Consider having the volunteer go ahead and precut
items and paste together pockets. Leave students with only the
larger items to cut.

lapbooking, click here or go to page 8.
6
What other ways can I use this lapbook besides whole-group
instruction?
mp
le
file
Lapbooks are great for small groups and for center instruction.
If the lapbook contains Bingo, it can be played in groups of up to
six. You can create just a few lapbooks that can be placed in
center stations or stored for a rainy recess or Fun Friday.
Laminating them will help them last. Be sure to laminate
before placing loose cards and minibooks (Laminate those
separately.). The pockets can be laminated together with the file
folder, and you can open up the slits afterwards with a box cutter.
Instead of putting three or four lapbooks together yourself,
consider having a “Lapbook Creation Day” where students can
work together to create a class set of lapbooks. This will give
them ownership of the learning and familiarize them with the
skills they are going to practice.
Sa
I really love the idea of lapbooking, but I need lapbooks more
specific to the content I’m teaching. What resources are out
there?
There are many amazing websites and blogs with excellent
lapbooking resources for purchasing and creating your own. For
a helpful page from my website, click here.
Also, if creating your own lapbooks, these websites provide
royalty-free clipart and/or photos. You can worry less about
copyright issues and know that what you are creating is truly
original.

1. Have students individually familiarize themselves with the expressions, orally practicing them and
self‐checking on the back of the cards. If they know a card well, they place it in the "Bien"pocket. If
they do not know it well, they place it in the "Más Práctica" pocket to practice again at a later time.
2. In pairs or small groups, have students play "Flashcard Face‐Off." To play, students place the cards
with the words face down. Taking turns, they choose a card, name it, and check the back to see if they
are correct. If they are, they keep the card. If not, they return it to the pile. Students continue taking
turns until all the cards are gone. The student with the most cards wins.
Activity 2: ¿Qué Hora Es? Clock
Page(s): 16
Objectives:
Students will create the correct time reading Spanish frases.
Assembly Instructions:
1. Cut out the clock and the two "manecillas". Poke a hole in the dots on the hands and the x on
the clock. Place the hands on top of each other in the center of the clock. Assemble together with
a brass fastener, allowing the hands to move.
Activity Suggestions:
1. Students place the flashcards face‐down with the written expressions on top. Students take turns
picking a card and making the correct time on the clock. They can self check by flipping the flashcard
over and seeing if the clock matches their clock.
Activity 3: "La Mañana, La Tarde, La Noche" Fold Minibooks
Page(s): 15
Objectives:
Students will write and/or draw what they do at different times of the day.

1. Students paste the clocks on the outside of the flaps, matching them correctly with the expressions
underneath.
2. Reviewing with a partner, students touch a digital clock, state the time in Spanish, and then open the
flap to see if they are correct.
Students will write the correct Spanish words for telling time and will also write/illustrate what they do
at certain times of the day.
Assembly Instructions:
1. Cut out each two pairs of pages as one rectangular piece
(pp 18‐19). Fold each pair of pages in half with the graphics
on the outside. Stack the pairs of pages on top of each other
in order, starting with the title page. Staple on the left side.

Activity Suggestions:
1. Students write their name on the title page. Students write the correct words in the blank. Students
write and/or illustrate what they do during the specific time in the book.
2. Students practice reading their books to partners or in small groups.
Activity 6: Matching
Page(s): 20‐22
Objectives:
Students will match and pronounce Spanish vocabulary associated with telling time.

Assembly Instructions:
1.**It is preferable to print out the matching words and clocks in card stock, if possible, so they will not show
through the other side. If the clocks or words are printed in a color other than white, that will distinguish
one from the other so students do not pick up two words or two clocks. If colored card stock is not
available, students can mark the back of the word cards or clock cards with a highlighter.
2. Cut out the clock cards and the word cards on the solid lines (p. 20‐21).
3. Cut out the pockets (p. 22) and assemble them (see directions for the flashcards in activity 1). Save the
"Fichas" pocket for activity 7.
Activity Suggestions:
1. In pairs or small groups, have students first pair the cards correctly with matching words and clocks.
Students then should divide the pairs into two groups. Students choose a group and play "matching."
After all cards are matched, then they may play with the other group of paired cards.
2. Students can race in partner groups against other partner groups by mixing all the cards together,
face‐up, and seeing who can match all the cards correctly the fastest.
3. Students can also place all the clock cards in a paper bag. Each student pulls out a card without
looking. Students must name the card in order to win. After all cards are pulled, the student with the
most cards wins. More advanced students can use the word in a sentence in order to win the card.
Activity 7: Bingo

1. Cut out the six bingo cards (pp. 23‐25).
2. Cut out the bingo calling cards (p. 26).
3. Cut out the bingo calling card envelope (p. 29) and assemble it according to the instructions in step 5.
You will store the calling cards in this envelope.
4. Cut out the Bingo cards pocket (p. 27) and assemble it (follow instructions in activity 1).
5. If you need Bingo chips, cut out the bingo squares (p. 31). Cut out the fichas (chips) envelope and
assemble it the same way you would a mailing envelope. Store the chips in the envelope, and the
envelope can be pasted on top of the Bingo card pocket.
