Working directly with
IPR Incorporated, we
were able to convert
poor quality photocopied
pages into useful, clear,
and concise parts book
drawings.

Second, we used our Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) software to create
an electronic text document of the parts
list. We then changed and added part
numbers.
Finally, we supplied IPR Inc. with a pdf
document which they supply to their
end users. This searchable document
drastically reduced the time spent visually
searching for a particular part number.
IPR’s goal was to recreate a parts
book from a second or third generation
photocopy. The driving force, behind the
Chicago area companies update, was a
design change to produce a new style
of pharmaceutical tablet and improve the
efficiency of the machine; which meant
adding and removing parts from the
current production model.
First, we were able to scan the poor quality
pages and then trace the drawings to
create new vector artwork. We then added
new part number callouts, which were
easier to read than the original photocopy.
We also updated the artwork to include
the new design changes. In some cases
we imported new parts directly from IPR’s
CAD program.

“We recently needed to produce an updated parts
manual for a machine we were redesigning. The
parts manual had to be finished within three weeks
to meet our deadline. Our senior engineer, who
had the responsibility for this task, could not
possibly do his work and update the existing parts
manual in such a short time. That’s when we called
TPA with an opportunity for them to help us. They
Page 25
were in our office the next morning to go over the
proposed project. Many of the drawings had to
be redrawn due to poor quality. We were also able to supply TPA with CAD engineering drawings of the new changes which they
incorporated into the existing parts drawings. The bottom line is that we met our deadline with an updated parts manual that was
more accurate and readable than the photocopied paper version supplied with the original machine. TPA provided us with an
on-time and on-budget project resulting in a clear, concise, user friendly parts manual. We will definitely use TPA again.”
Joe Dougherty, IPR Incorporated, Bartlett, Illinois (www.iprinc.net)
Creating Innovative Solutions to Meet Your Needs
TPA has the experience and capability to save you both time and money.
Vector vs. Raster Artwork
Rasterized artwork is best
explained as a photocopied
or scanned page. While this
process is the least expensive,
it has many drawbacks. The
advantage to working with
vector art is the ability to
move, separate, or easily add
new parts into the drawing.
The illustrations show how in
raster artwork, what you see is
what you get. In vector artwork
each of the parts is fully drawn,
giving you the ability to make
changes quickly and with less

cost.
