Program Notes
The Duxbury Free Library has another season of exciting adult programs scheduled throughout the coming months. Free
tickets are available for all events two weeks prior to the program date. Author programs are co-sponsored with
Westwinds Bookshop. New programs are being added often! Please check back for updated schedules or see our
website for the most recent events.
November
Laughter Yoga. Thursdays, ongoing. 11:30 a.m.-noon. Free, drop in! (for adults only) Come laugh with us. No props, no
jokes, just imaginative fun. Gentle stretching, mostly seated. Simple but effective. Held in the lower level resource room.
Sunday, November 25th. Sunday Salon. Duxbury Rural and Historical Society. Victorian’s Secrets: Corsets and Kiddie
Clothes. Mattie Ali, chair of the Society’s Costume Committee, will present a program including 19th century corsets and
children’s pieces from the collection.
Wednesday, November 28th. Nightlights. 7:00 p.m. Author Maryanne O’Hara presents Cascade, a novel already
receiving fabulous reviews. The Boston Globe’s Caroline Leavitt writes, “Cascade unfolds like a Shakespearean tragedy,
with an ending you won’t see coming.”

Sunday, December 2nd. 2:00 p.m. Sunday Salon. Author and Celebrity Lee Woodruff, presenting Those We Love Most.
Lee Woodruff is the coauthor with her husband, Bob Woodruff, of the number one New York Times bestseller In an
Instant. She is a contributing editor to CBS This Morning and has written numerous articles on family and parenting for
Parade, Ladies' Home Journal, Redbook, Country Living, and Family Fun. She and Bob founded the Bob Woodruff
Foundation to assist wounded service members and their families.
Sunday, December 9th, 2:00 p.m. Sunday Salon. Artist/photographer/author Margot Cheel. Ms. Cheel is a renowned fine
aerial art photographer who will present her newest book, Sea and Sand from the Sky. Not only is Ms. Cheel a pilot and
artist, but she facilitates creativity workshops around the South Shore.
Sunday, December 30th, 2:00 p.m. Film screening of The Magnificent Ambersons. Program will include a lecture
presented by Tony Kelso entitled Duxbury’s Magnificent Gilded Wrights. This program is brought to you by Duxbury’s
375th Anniversary Committee.

Sunday, January 6th, 2:00 p.m. Sunday Salon. Professor Mitra Shavarini presents her book, Desert Roots: Journey of an
Iranian Immigrant Family. Ms. Shavarini is a lecturer in Peace, Conflict and Coexistence Studies and Women’s and
Gender Studies at Brandeis University. Her research focuses on women’s education in Muslim societies.
Sunday, January 13th, 2:00 p.m. Sunday Salon. Author Madeline Miller presents Song of Achilles. This debut novel is
receiving acclaim from many sources. O magazine stated that “You don’t need to be familiar with Homer’s The Iliad (or
Brad Pitt’s Troy, for that matter) to find Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles spellbinding....her explorations of ego,
grief, and love’s many permutations are both familiar and new....[A] timeless love story.” Ms. Miller is sure to be on
every reader’s Must Reads this year.
Friday, January 18th. 7:00-8:30 p.m. Michael Drout speaks on The Hobbit. Michael Drout, professor of English with a
focus on Anglo-saxon and a Tolkien expert, comes again to give us new insight into Tolkien’s first work of fiction. Adults,
teens and children are welcome.
Sunday, January 20th, 2:00 p.m. Local author Anne LeClair. Ms. LeClair has written eight novels including critically
acclaimed Entering Normal, The Lavendar Hour and Leaving Eden. Her first full-length work of nonfiction, Listening
Below the Noise, is a meditation on the practice of silence. Joan Anderson, author of A Year by the Sea, says LeClair
“takes her reader to that quiet place within where it becomes possible to hear what one’s heart needs to say. Her story
is made all the more powerful because she practices what she writes.”
Thursday, January 24th, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Robert Rivest: Stress Management: Learn, Laugh and Let Go. An interactive
stress relief show. Robert Rivest offers parents and seniors methods to de-stress their lives and find more happiness and
contentment in the simple aspect of living. Sponsored by the Children’s Services Department AND the Duxbury Senior
Center. This program is a must-see for adults living a busy life!

Sunday, February 3rd, 2:00 p.m. Sunday Salon. Author Roland Merullo. The recipient of numerous awards, including the
2000 Massachusetts Book Award for nonfiction for his memoir, Revere Beach Elegy, Roland Merullo will present his
latest novel, Lunch with Buddha.
Thursday, February 7th, 7:00 p.m. Nightlights. Author Meredith Goldstein presents The Singles, a charming debut novel
with funny single characters who attend a wedding solo. Meredith is an advice columnist and entertainment reporter for
The Boston Globe. Her column, Love Letters, is a daily dispatch of wisdom for the lovelorn that gets about one million
page views every month on boston.com.
Sunday, February 10th, 2:00 p.m. Sunday Salon. The New York Times bestselling author William Martin returns to
present his newest Peter Fallon adventure, The Lincoln Letter. This latest novel brings you to the heart of Abraham
Lincoln’s Washington during the Civil War. Doris Kearns Goodwin gave advance praise of the novel--“What an irresistible
combination—a sparkling mystery, intriguing characters, and lively history. I am a huge William Martin fan, but The
Lincoln Letter is my absolute favorite.”
Sunday, February 24th, 2:00 p.m. Sunday Salon. Massachusetts Cranberry Culture: From Bog to Table with Rob Cox and
Jacob Walker.
