Since then it has made an outstanding and respected contribution to the Israeli music scene. From the very first note it played, the orchestra’s professionalism and creativity set the tone. Brilliant musical talents found a home there, and audiences have remained captivated. In the fifty years of its existence, it has stood out as one of the most important and acclaimed chamber orchestras in Israel and around the world, boasting of impressive musical achievements. Owing to the splendid sounds it produces, the Israel Chamber Orchestra blends in harmoniously with our city-its home base – Tel Aviv-Yafo. Never-ending cultural endeavors, coupled with the belief that all forms of art are a necessity and not a luxury, are among the city’s foundations and a vital need of its residents. Those values have brought Tel Aviv-Yafo recognition and esteem that cross borders and continents, and have rightfully solidified the city’s standing as Israel’s cultural capital and an international cultural center. The Israel Chamber Orchestra is a vibrant Tel-Aviv orchestra that offers superb performances, virtuosity and luster. By its very essence, it is connected to Tel Aviv-Yafo and nourishes the city’s cultural and artistic traditions. Over the course of its first 50 years, some of the world's greatest musicians performed with ICO. Musical directors such as ICO founder Gary Bertini and Maestri Luciano Berio, Yoav Talmi, Rudolf Barshai and Shlomo Mintz are a reflection of the importance and stature ICO gained over the years. The coming season marks a new path for ICO. I am thrilled and excited by the honor bestowed upon me as the new musical director, of taking a part in this distinguished and illustrious journey, and it is my intention to lead ICO to its rightful and natural niche, at the very core of cultural life in Israel and around the world. At the inaugural concert of the Israel Chamber Ensemble, fifty years ago, Gary Bertini stressed the importance of original Israeli creation by stating: "The Ensemble will faithfully serve worthy Israeli creation by allocating a regular slot for it in its programs. Israeli performing artists will be invited to perform with the Ensemble alongside distinguished guest artists from abroad. We hope that some of our people who currently reside overseas will return to Israel to join us." All that remains for me to do is align myself with his vision. Our 50th anniversary season will introduce us to such wonderful guests as celebrated pianist Elisso Virsaladze and percussion artist Martin Grubinger, alongside firstrate Israeli musicians such as Noam Sheriff, Arie Vardi, Zvi Plesser and Chen Halevi a combination between the old and traditional on the one hand, and the new and innovative on the other hand. Classic masterpieces like symphonies by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven alongside contemporary Israeli creation like the works of Ioseb Bardanshvili, Avner Dorman and Noam Sheriff. We will also cooperate with acclaimed international musicians from the realms of Latin-American music, Klezmer and Jazz, as we believe that first-rate music is by no means the exclusive property of the classical music world. Young audiences occupy pride of place in my heart. In cooperation with such wonderful creative artists as Alex Ansky, Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen, we have assembled quality programs for these audiences that treat them with the respect they deserve - as I regard them as our future audience. You, music lovers, are our full partners in this journey toward the realization of our vision. Music attains its full significance when it is heard with open ears and minds, and we thank you for that. We will spare no effort in our attempt to remain a source of inspiration and high-quality culture for all of you. During this season, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Israel Chamber Orchestra by Maestro Gary Bertini in 1965. The vision that guided Maestro Bertini when he founded our orchestra was to establish a music ensemble that would perform a diversified chamber music repertoire – unlike the standard 'classical' diversity available back then. Indeed, Maestro Bertini made it a point of including original Israeli works in his programs, along with educational content intended for young audiences. Throughout the years, ICO has observed these guidelines, and our coming season will likewise include a diversified chamber music repertoire, both instrumental and vocal, Israeli compositions and, naturally, our successful 'Classicali' series for the entire family. This coming season also marks the appointment of Maestro Ariel Zuckermann as the new musical director of the Israel Chamber Orchestra. Ariel, a Sabra, attained his music education in this country, and he will lead ICO through an invigorating and captivating concert season.
