He began his visit in Boston,
where he delivered a speech at
Brandeis University on the 50th
Anniversary
of
its
student
exchange program. Minister Dr.
Rupel studied at the Brandeis
University in 1971/1972 and
completed his PhD there in
1976.
On Saturday, April 13, Minister
Dr. Rupel visited New York City,
where he met Ban Ki-moon, UN
Secretary-General, and Gareth
Evans,
President
of
the
International Crisis Group, an
independent
non-profit
NGO
which carries out analyses and
gives
counsel
on
conflict
prevention and resolution.
On April 14 Minister Dr. Rupel
visited Washington, DC, where
he met Secretary of State

Stephen
Hadley,
and
visited
the
headquarters
of
the
Organization
of
American
States.

The purpose of the Minister Dr.
Rupel's visit was mainly the
preparation for the EU-U.S.
Summit in Ljubljana in June
2008 and the exchange of views
on the situation in the Western
Balkans
with
emphasis
on
Kosovo.
With
his
U.S.
collocutors he discussed possible

actions that would help stabilize
the region.
At the Organization of American
States (OAS) Minister Dr. Rupel
met OAS Assistant SecretaryGeneral Albert R. Ramdin and
addressed the OAS Permanent
Council. In his speech, he
outlined the challenges of the
Slovenian Presidency of the EU
Council and the preparations for
the EU-U.S. (June 2008) and
EU-Latin America (May 2008)
summits. He devoted special
attention to the cooperation
between the EU and Latin
America and the Caribbean.
EU Open House and
Europe Week

European Union Embassies in
Washington, DC will open their
doors to the public, following
last year's success with some
35,000 visits to the participating
Embassies.

Open House kicks off Europe
Week (May 3-10), a week long
celebration of European culture
in Washington, DC. For more

Chief of Mission at the Embassy

Slovenia,
gave
an
introductory speech. She spoke
about Slovenia and its culture,
as well as about the EU
Presidency and the Embassy’s
ties with AARP. The dinner was
very well attended, and among
the 60 guests there were
several notable individuals such
as Ms. Mary Robinson, former
President of Ireland, H.E. Mr.
John Bruton, Head of the EU
Commission Delegation to USA
and former Prime Minister of
Ireland,
Carolyn
Bennett,
member
of
the
Canadian
Parliament, Ms. Line Vreven,
Vice President, International,
AARP, and Mr. John Rother,
Group Executive Officer for
Policy and Strategy, AARP.

Thus, on Saturday, May 3, the
EU Embassies and the EC
Delegation will once again invite
Washington-area residents and
visitors
to
experience
the
diversity
and
richness
of
European culture. From 10:00
a.m. until 3:00 p.m., visitors will
get a rare behind-the-scenes
look at the European Embassies,
many of which are among
Washington's
historic
and
architectural treasures. A free
shuttle service will be provided
from Metro stops at Dupont
Circle, Farragut North, and

Slovenian Embassy Hosts
AARP Dinner
Washington, April 14 - The
Embassy of Slovenia hosted a
dinner in conjunction with the
AARP International, a non-profit
organization that aims to help
people live longer, healthier,
more
financially secure and
productive lives by identifying
the best ideas and practices on
key policy issues. The dinner

Cleveland, April 11 - Miss
Nicole Mihalic, the President of
the Rotaract Club at the Baldwin
Wallace College in Brea, Ohio
and her colleagues, organized a
successful fund-raising dinner
and
silent
auction
called
"Walking without Fear."
All the proceeds from the
auction went to the Slovenianbased International Trust Fund
for
Demining
(ITF),
which
celebrated its 10th anniversary
on the day of the auction.

Miriam Možgan, Deputy Chief of
Mission

the
Slovenian
Embassy,
stressed
in
her
address that the ITF and
Slovenia have been devoted to
the eradication of landmines and
their impact in the Western
Balkans region and other mineaffected regions.

Miss Možgan also talked about
the successful project initiated
last year by the Slovenian
Ambassador Samuel Žbogar,
who managed to raise $70,000
for the rehabilitation of six
young mine victims from Bosnia
and Herzegovina by running
several marathons.

in Cleveland

Cleveland
hosted
a
public
recording of the Radio Slovenia
program “Koncert iz
naših
krajev” (“Concert from our
land”). The program, which has
a long tradition, was recorded in

Slovenian
communities
in
Cleveland, Toronto and St.
Catherines in Canada. The
program was presented by the
Slovenian radio presenter Mr.
Janez Dolinar, and included
several choirs and individual
musicians from the Slovenian
community in Ohio. There were
also representatives from both
Slovenian schools, the museum
of polka and other individuals
involved in the project. The
event attracted a large crowd
and it is important to note that
the majority of performers were
young,
second
generation
Slovenians in the U.S.
