Achieving More
With Less Money:
‘Creativity’ in Handling
How the MOSAIK service became both better and less costly
The goal for the further development of the central freight system MOSAIK was an ambitious one: to
lower costs without affecting the quality and also to increase the range of services. A difficult
undertaking, but the Process Department and IT in Handling (F/HB-I) made it possible.
A new contract with AS Logistics, our strategic IT Partner, saw a cool 40% reduction in the annual maintenance
and development costs for MOSAIK compared to 2001. Also, since 1st January, a daily “around the clock ” on call
service means that support for MOSAIK is guaranteed outside office hours to handle problems. This averts the
risk of lengthy interruptions or even the failure of the central system. Even the shortest downtime in this most
important LCAG Information Technology system can have severe consequences as around 5 million transactions
are processed per day, equating to an average of 58 per second, with a lot more at peak times.
Freight experience from India
This new arrangement was made possible by Lufthansa Systems AS and F/HB-I securing the Indian software
company Hexaware as a subcontractor, replacing Unisys for the maintenance and development of MOSAIK. The
Indians won us over with their sound knowledge and experience of Unisys applications and by the fact that they
are also responsible for the comparable freight systems of Air Canada and Northwest Airlines. Furthermore,
Hexaware is even directly involved in further developing the under-lying standard software as a subcontractor of
Unisys.
Despite the high level of complexity, the 3 month knowledge transfer and handover of responsibilities from the
previous Unisys team to the Hexaware employees was completed in a comparatively short time with the support
of F/HB-I. All those involved are proud of the smooth transfer of responsibility as this is in no way a matter of
course in the world of IT.
In parallel, F/HB-I, along with Information Management (F/CA) and Purchasing (F/RG-M), re-negotiated the
contract for the technical operation of MOSAIK at the computer center of Lufthansa Systems Infratec in
Kelsterbach, achieving a significant saving here too. Now the users are happy about the better service, and
management is happy about the lower costs. All in all, the annual saving in both areas comes to around 3 million
euro.

APPRECIATION FROM CORIO
“Ram Kothandaraman hit the ground running on his first project at Corio with the Keybank Solaris to HP migration
and has continued to do a tremendous job on several other technical projects especially the Hoyts upgrade which
had a very aggressive timeline. He took the initiative to manage the project plan keeping the customer apprised of
the daily status, and then executed the technical activities, in addition to providing the post live support. I was very
impressed and pleased with his work on this project and the other projects listed above. Ram's strengths are his
technical PeopleSoft knowledge, Oracle and Unix skills, work ethics, dedication, and commitment to customer
satisfaction. He communicates well with the customers and gives them the comfort of knowing he's there to help.
He's a true team player and has exceeded my expectations. I am sure he will continue this trend in the upcoming
year.”

APPRECIATION FROM EXULT
“I am writing a quick note to communicate my satisfaction with both Prema and Krishna. Since coming onto the
project Krishna has put incredible energy into ensuring that the Team understood the workings of the Purchase
Order Module (POM as we affectionately call it). Krishna has been a joy to work with; his sense of humor has
been greatly appreciated. We have been working with very tight deadlines for code delivery and both Krishna and
Prema have performed admirably. We have also been involved in a lot of changes to the specifications, which
have required exhaustive phone conversations (since none of the Team is located in the same vicinity). These
phone calls have resulted in changes to code already delivered, changes to the code delivery date, testing
revisions, and changes to the production release dates. In all situations, Krishna and Prema have co-operated,
kept the Team on track, and delivered according to their promises. Krishna's ability to propose creative solutions
to complex user requests has been invaluable.
I would work with both of them again on a future project.
Thank you”

“I would like to say what a great job Avadhut Sathe has done. He has jumped in and taken charge of the
Financial Systems production support. His follow up is thorough and he unafraid to get others involved at the
appropriate time. He is also a wonderful communicator. For example, last night when the client suddenly
changed their mind about whether AP's interface file to BAS should be released, he immediately followed through
including updating the ITSR. This morning, we received confirmation that the needed files were successfully
received.”

“I would like to recognize the Recon development team (Samith Shetty, Partha, John Samuel, Sagaya Mary,
Shiram Jayaram) for the great job they did in developing and testing the re-platformed system. Currently, the
system is being parallel tested and the users are very pleased with the results.
The system is user friendly and definitely more stable. It also reduces our dependency on the Bank's
environment.
A job well done! “

This collaboration was done with two projects in mind: PCX Life and the consistency and integrity study of the
databases.
In spite of language and cultural differences between our two teams, we succeeded, thanks to the extraordinary
ongoing technical effort, in establishing an efficient dialogue to accomplish these two projects.
I include in my thanks not only those people I met in Brussels but also those who worked "off shore" to bring
about the success of these projects:

I hope that the year 2003 will be just as fruitful for our

Only a pure Internet solution—one delivered completely in HTML, with collaborative networks that can be
accessed anytime, anywhere by sales force, employees, and support personnel—could meet all these objectives.
The Sales Force Automation
The CRM System serves as the gateway to better management of sales process. With a single sign-on from any
web browser, employees can access role-based transactions and information from wherever their work might take
them. In one glance, employees can access leads, opportunities and other sales related information; send
requests and updates to their support department for automated processing; receive alerts on items that require
action; generate company database—all from their desktop. That’s the essence of a collaborative enterprise.
"This would be the starting point of building a better relationship with our customers” says Rusi Brij, CEO
Hexaware Technologies. "If our sales people have information at their finger tips, the customer will be rid of any
feedback and follow up calls.
Ashok Bildikar, Senior Vice President , believes Hexaware Sales Force will see an immediate improvement in the
way they do business. "The leads and opportunities will be better managed with all the interaction captured into a
single system which will act as a knowledge repository for the organization" he says. "We can now tell our
customers that we know firsthand how streamlined daily tasks can be with PeopleSoft 8 CRM"

DAY OUT
Glimpse of the day, with fun filled hours and memorable events are the words that appropriately describe the day
of PSPM’s outing.
The trip was flagged off with high expectations of fun.The group landed up at Green Coconut Resorts at around
10.30am. It was a place of scenic beauty. The sun was shining in all its glory clearly a perfect day for some nonstop sports action. The sports trigger was on Volley Ball. To make it clearer, it was Beach Volleyball. An
immediate fire was caught amidst the team where in everyone was typically dressed up with colorful sports gear
on them. It was perfect for the occasion. To start with a professional attitude, the teams kicked off with some
warm up games. After a game or so, it was time for action.
The experienced hands like Lloyd, Ramana, Badri, Jaiganesh and Nitin played really well and all others were
providing the fun required! As and when there was quick shuffle among the teams to make the event more
glittering and suitable for good fun. There were regular intervals for rest during which some of the players
refreshed themselves. The teams couldn’t really stop playing till 12.00 and completed three matches.
It was time now for cricket. It was a game with no restriction or rules. It was a typically designed Desi Street
Cricket. The pitch was under perfect hot weather, which related to some of the conditions that were available in
the Caribbean islands, and the tiny little compound walls formed the boundary lines for the cricketing arena. With
two separate teams filled with all rounder’s, it was the occasion of the captains to decide the toss. The
respective captains for the two teams were Badri and Nithin. Badri won the toss and he elected to bat first. The
bowling was pure chucking with massive pace to be generated by the bowlers. In spite of this Badri’s team made

a massive total of 44 in just 6 over. It was just hard hitting by the team members who treated each over as a slog
over.
It was then chance for the other team to make their mark. They fought a lot but unfortunately the big guns had
won it by a considerable margin. It was victory to the best team of the day.
The mega fun started when everyone made dives to the swimming pool with coloured swim suits. The crowd
seriously started playing Water POLO. The game was quite exciting that continued for almost three hours. Few of
us being first timers for swimming have exhibited excellent actions in the pool that made the event unforgettable.
The rest of the evening was spent idling away under the long green fronds of the coconut trees having an eye
open for any interesting developments in the world cup cricket match The event came to close with a cup of tea
and snacks under the tall coconut trees with dances to the music.
Left the Resort carrying lots of unforgettable memories for the future.

On Feb 14 Hexaware was flooded with employees dressed in all shades of blue, blue the color of constancy and
faith, the color of the heavens and the oceans. The first celebration for the year – Valentine’s Day. Specially
designed Valentine slips were placed at all the locations for employees to write pleasant things about one
another. The offices were humming with expectation and festive feeling. At the end of the day the count was
taken and Subha Srinivasan, the person to write the most number of Valentine slips and P K Karthikeyan, the one
to receive the most number of slips were presented a gift. Employees were very enthusiastic and more than 250
slips were counted. A group of Hexawarians visited the various locations and presented a chocolate and rose to
every employee.
Mumbai
There is nothing that needs to be explained. It is the feeling of love and belonging for someone dear to you. It
could your child, your husband or wife, your teacher or your fiancé or fiancée. Sadly, there are many
misconceptions about this day. At Hexaware, we had a sale of beautiful roses. The employees could buy them
and give to their friends, teams and families. After the roses sale, we celebrated by cutting a cake. We had some
of our clients who made their presence at the event venue. The colour for the day was shades of Pastel.

There is a special significance attached to the celebration of
Makar Sankranti, the day when according to the Hindu astronomy
the sun enters the rashi (zodiac) of Makara (Capricorn), is
celebrated as the Kite Flying Day. The clear blue sky seems to
beckon everyone, and the people surrender themselves to the joy
of kite flying. And thus, the sky-since morning to evening-remains
dotted with vivid splashes of colour as kites in a variety of hues,
shapes and sizes dart across the blue sky. The excitement is
difficult to contain with the onset of night.
Makar Sankranti marks the end of a long winter with the return of
the sun to the Northern Hemisphere and hence the name
Uttarayan. It is celebrated all over Gujarat but the excitement runs highest at Ahmedabad, Surat (known
particularly for the strong string which is made by applying glass powder on the row thread to provide it a cutting
edge) Nadiad and Vadodara. To be in any one of these places during this festival is to feel the heart and pulse of
Gujarat and its people.
At Hexaware, Mahape, we celebrated the festival with great pomp. All the ladies in the office were clad in black
sarees marking the occasion. We also had the Inter DU kite flying competition on our very own Roof Top.
Thereafter we had some evening snacks.
The Winners were:

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't!
If you want to win, but think you can't!
It's almost an cinch you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost;
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will;
It's all in the state of mind.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger and faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the who thinks he can.
