Application for Release Letter – International Students
This form only applies to students on a student visa who have applied to study at another institution
within the first 6 months of their principal course at The University of Sydney and seek to be released
from The University of Sydney.
Important Information

you have any outstanding debt to the University.
Debts include all fees, loans, and library fines;
The University of Sydney will issue the release
letter where it is satisfied that:

your academic progression is unsatisfactory, i.e.
Suspended/Excluded;
The University of Sydney withdrew its offer of
admission due the submission of fraudulent,
incomplete, or inconsistent documents with your
application for admission.



A course is academically unsuitable for
the student;
A course is inappropriate for the student
(i.e. student is better suited to a different
academic environment or course does
not meet his/her educational of
developmental needs);
Compassionate or compelling reasons for
the transfer exist

Supporting Documentation
Applications for a release letter will only be
considered if you attach the following supporting
documents:
International Students should not accept an offer
at another institution unless The University of
Sydney has agreed to issue the release letter. For

Applications may take up to three (3) working
days to process. For Release Letters collected by
a third party, the applicant must provide written
authorisation.
Please NOTE:
Discontinuation (Current Students Only)
It is your responsibility to formally discontinue from
your course if you wish to accept an offer at
another institution. To discontinue from a course,
you must contact your faculty office for processing.
A Release Letter cannot be issued if:

you have not attached a copy of your
new offer letter;
Offer letter from another provider; and
Statement outlining the reasons why you
are seeking
release
or
other
documentation explaining
reasons for
release request;
If under the age of 18, a copy of written
approval from a parent or legal guardian
supporting the transfer is also required.

Please complete this form and submit it to the International Office if you are withdrawing from the University
of Sydney within the first 6 months of your course and if you wish to study at another institution
If you are an enrolled student, you must notify your faculty of your intention to discontinue your academic
program. Please contact your faculty prior to submitting this form to the International Office.
Required Documentation
A Release Letter can only be provided if the following documents have been attached:
 Offer letter from another provider; and
 Statement outlining the reasons why you are seeking release or other documentation explaining
reasons for release request;
 If under the age of 18, a copy of written approval from a parent or legal guardian supporting the
transfer is also required.

 I can not meet the University of Sydney’s English language requirements or admission requirements within
a reasonable time frame (Please attach evidence of your final English or Foundation results.
 I have a serious health issue or require a release letter on other compassionate grounds (please provide
details and supporting documentation).
 I can demonstrate mismatch between the offer I have accepted and my understanding of the course.
 The course is no longer offered by The University of Sydney.
