SUNDAY SCRIPTURES
THEME: RELIGION AND POLITICS
Unlike conventional wisdom, today’s readings take on the
often tricky relationship between these two topics. God
uses a pagan ruler as mashiach (messiah), and Jesus
denies a ruler’s divinity while remaining a faithful citizen.
It can be done!
Isaiah 45:1,4-6 I am the Lord and there is no other.
Psalm 96 Give the Lord glory and honor.
1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b The Gospel does not come to
us in word alone.

A NOTE ABOUT BECOMING SPONSORS FOR BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION
It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism
or Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an
“other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why
sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 years of age or
older, having received Confirmation and currently living a
good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that
person must be in a valid Church marriage. One sponsor
is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two
for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the
other female. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by
a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a
sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the
individual must be a current parishioner of the particular
parish where the certification is being sought, and be
known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing
Catholic, attending Mass there regularly. Unfortunately,
at times, family members or friends are chosen to be
sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their
childhood parish, where they attended school or received
sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area
or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all
individuals to be active members of their local Catholic
faith communities. The unfortunate fact is that some are
neither practicing Catholics nor faithful members of a parish family, and are thereby ineligible to become sponsors.
Like all other things in life, individual choices bring consequences. Here at St. Ursula, Certificates of Sponsorship are given by the priest to registered members of
the parish who are practicing Catholics and who meet
the above criteria.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
Today is World Mission Sunday. We are invited today to
reach out and help build the Church in Mongolia, the
world’s youngest Catholic Church, as well as local
churches throughout the Missions, in the most remote
areas across our world. Your prayers and generous gift
to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the collection today help the work of priests, religious and lay
leaders in Mongolia and throughout the Missions who offer the poor practical help and the experience of God’s
love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep the
Missions in your daily prayers. Please be as generous as
you can to today’s collection. For more information,
please visit www.IAmAMissionary.org.
ELECTION DAY
Election Day is Coming - Make Sure to Vote as a
Catholic
We encourage all citizens, particularly Catholics, to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege,
but as an opportunity meaningfully to participate in building the culture of life. Every voice matters in the public
forum. Every vote counts. Every act of responsible citizenship is an exercise of significant individual power. We
must exercise that power in ways that defend human life,
especially those of God’s children who are unborn, disabled or otherwise vulnerable. We get the public officials
we deserve. Their virtue -- or lack thereof -- is a judgment
not only on them, but on us. Because of this, we urge our
fellow citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze
campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political
leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere
self-interest.

the Gospel of Life.

SAINTS OF THE WEEK
October 20th - St. Paul of the Cross, priest
Paul of the Cross, died 18 October 1775; born in Liguria;
renowned preacher and founder (1720) of the Passionists
[C.P.], today numbering about 2,160 members, who combine the apostolate of retreats and missions with penitential monasticism.
October 22nd - St. John Paul II, pope
Karol Józef Wotjtyla was born in 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. As archbishop of Krakow, he took part in the Second Vatican Council. On October 16, 1978, he was
elected pope and took the name John Paul II. His exceptional apostolic zeal, particularly for families, young people, and the sick, led him to make numerous pastoral visits throughout the world. He left as a heritage to the
Church a rich Magisterium and the promulgation of the
Catechism of the Catholic Church, the revised Code of
Canon Law for the Latin Church and Eastern Churches,
and the third typical edition of the Roman Missal. Pope
John Paul II departed peacefully in the Lord on 2 April
2005, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him on 1 May 2011.
October 23rd - St. John of Capistrano, priest
John of Capistrano, died 1456; O.F.M.; reformer of the
Franciscans and Poor Clares; preached devotion to the
Holy Name of Jesus (3 Jan.); sought an end to the Western Schism; animated resistance against the Turks at the
battle of Belgrade (1456); patron of military chaplains.
October 24th - St. Anthony Mary Claret, bishop
Anthony Claret, died 1870; from Catalonia; vigorous reforming bishop of Santiago, Cuba; founded (1849) the
Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary [C.M.F.]
(Claretians), today numbering about 3,000 members; fostered credit unions and the apostolate of the press.
EVERYTHING BELONGS TO GOD
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns the
Persian King Cyrus, called the Lord’s “anointed.” Cyrus
deserves this title because he ended the Babylonian captivity of the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us that it was
God who gave Cyrus his power. He may be a great king,
but “I am the LORD and there is no other,” says God
(Isaiah 45:5).
Today’s Gospel is also concerned with worldly power.
In the passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to trick
Jesus into speaking against the emperor. His famous answer is the perfect reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar can
be given the respect due his position, but everything belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who
are faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us that our call and the power to be faithful come
from God.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council met
to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were required
to draw up a new rite, including several forms. The hot
button for debate was so-called “general absolution,” by
which a penitent could be absolved of sin without confessing to a priest. This was a difficult debate, compounded by
widely varying traditions in both East and West. Some
were surprised to learn that the Holy See had already
given permission, during the First and Second World
Wars, for this form. In 1944 the Vatican issued a decree
saying this form was valid under extreme conditions,
which bishops in mission lands and Latin America took as
a kind of “blanket permission.”
Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to find
this practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but in
peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few
priests. Although they eventually produced a ritual with
three different forms, the forms are not considered equal,
and the enriched and revised individual form is preferred.
The enrichments include a welcome of the penitent, a
sign of the cross with an encouragement to trust in God’s
compassion, new texts rich in the Word of God, praise for
God’s mercy, and a dismissal.
